That was a poorly written article. EDIT: To clarify: The articles progression: -Some Michigan fans are rooting for MSU -Rooting for troubled state and economy, woo -Turncoats, Bo rolling in grave -Some Michigan fans aren't rooting for MSU -It hurts that MSU beat them in "the sports that matter" -Isn't that veird?

I talked to someone from Purdue this morning, who is rooting against UNC, more than rooting for MSU. I have to agree. But more than that, something came to me using the "little brother" picture. I always want to beat my little brother. But I'd rather my brother beat others. Those who want their own brother to lose, man, that is one dysfunctional family. I can't stand Hansbrough, and like Izzo more than Williams. And I want the Big 10 to win, so must root against UNC, more than anything else.

Why do you like Izzo more than Williams? Is it because Izzo is "classier" than Roy? You can't stand a big white dude who actually stayed in school for four years and put off his NBA career to get a degree and win a NC for his team? The Big Ten has already proved its worth, I don't think this win will put the conference over the top. Only MSU will benefit.

I might agree if MSU was an actual blood relative of U-M. Remember "little brother" was just a metaphor for how they couldn't beat U-M. I understand the whole Big 10 thing but was anyone cheering for Ohio State in the first round? I'll cheer for Al-Qaeda before I cheer for OSU/MSU. Alright maybe not Al-Qaeda. But definitely any other sports team in history.

I've never posted here before, and surely my grammar will be mocked. Anyhow, this topic-more importantly this response-made me want to post here. I agree 100% with this post...I WILL NEVER root for the idiots from east lansing, go heels!

Too bad. You will be hearing it non-stop. If they win the title, from now until sept. sparty will be talking about their 'destined' title. Come sept. they'll be calling michigan 'little sisters, dick rod...blah blah' and proclaiming that they will win the big ten since they don't play OSU or Iowa, and that Michigan is a joke compared to dantonio's prowess. It will certainly be annoying.

You think they wouldn't say that anyway? The way I look at it... They are our little brother, so when your little brother accomplishes something, it brings pride to the family. Of course, it hurts when you failed in your own attempts to accomplish the same, so you resent it. However it is your little brother, so, although it's obviously not something you'll like, you can be proud of him. I say this, but then the first time I tell a State fan, "congrats," and I receive an asinine, snide remark, I will immediately resent it entirely.

It's a rival vs. rival situation. I'm not dying for either one of them to win, but I am pleased there are NO Big East teams in the championship, because I sure am tired of hearing how superior that conference is. My bracket is finished as of the Elite Eight, so whoever wins I'm okay with. I guess once the game starts and I start saying "Oh crap!" when someone misses an easy basket I'll know who I'm rooting for.

I guess because I didn't grow up rooting for UVA, I don't have the same feeling about UNC as a rival as I do about VT or Maryland. I've always liked UNC. I definitely see MSU as a bigger rival to Michigan than UNC to UVA, and I think the historical disparity in basketball between UNC and everyone but Duke kind of makes it tough to call it a rivalry. Football is different - we're not allowed to lose to UNC at home. But basketball.....I just don't feel any different about UNC than I do about the other schools, except that beating them means you beat a better team than the others. I guess that's the long, wordy way of saying I'm pulling for UNC all the way tonight.

My brothers are all huge MSU fans (my dad went to MSU) and talk more crap per game than I talk per season. I'm watching the game with 2 of my brothers and my dad while my oldest brother is going to be at the game. Not only am I going to cheer nonstop against MSU but I'll cheer for UNC (who I hate) and will pleading with God for an MSU loss. When I talk crap after a U-M over MSU win, they just say, "Michigan was supposed to win" or "Wait until basketball" or whatever...so even if Michigan isn't still going, it's more fun to just laugh at MSU losses. But just like I cheered against OSU in the first round of the tournament, and laughed when they lost...so I will cheer against MSU and hopefully laugh when they lose. The Big 10 has proved themselves this tournament and it won't hurt the Big 10 at all if they lose a game they're predicted to lose. I keep telling family and MSU-fan friends that I hope it's close (at least closer than their first meeting at Ford Field) but I hope UNC wins by 40. Cheering for MSU to win is stupid.

I want State to win. I don't have a problem with their basketball team, and I like Tom Izzo. Also, Hansbrough's eyes creep me out.

it was kind of nice to see them knock off uconn and lousiville but i'll be cheering against them tonight solely because i don't want to hear about it for the next 10 years from obnoxious state fans

MSU will not win, so go ahead and root for them. There, you have your cake and can eat it too. You can feel good about cheering for your little brother, but don't have to listen to how he won for the next 10 years. PS- I hate NC as much as anyone so my attention tonight will be on the game of basketball as a whole, not one team.

Like a lot of people on this board, I grew up in Michigan and have friends, family, and coworkers who went to State. Unlike many people here, I have never had anything against MSU basketball. I love the style of game they play -- aggressive, crashing the boards, team basketball -- and I'll be happy if they win. Will it suck to hear about it all year? Yes. Will it hurt Michigan recruiting? Yes. But, I remember how great it felt in 97 when we won the Football Championship, or in 89 for Basketball, or our Hockey titles, and I don't want to take that feeling away from my good friends, no matter how big of assholes they will be about it.

You are not true blue if you root for state. I hate UNC but I hate MSU alot more. It's good for the economy that it's in Detroit but MSU fans actually decrease the money brought into Detroit because none of them stay in the city. Screw them because I'm a true Michigan fan.

WolvinLA

I disagree with this. Cheering for State does not keep you from being true blue, whatever that means. I'm as big of a Michigan fan as they come, but I'm also from Michigan. Maybe it's because I live outside of MI now and everyone likes to rag on how much they think Michigan sucks, but I like to see any team from our state do well. I like to see the Big Ten do well. I cheer for the Big Ten teams in bowl games as well, I don't see how this is any different. Truth be told, a lot of Spartans went to the same high schools we did, are from the same cities we are from, cheer for the same pro teams we cheer for, and so on. If you are a UM fan from elsewhere, I understand. But tonight I'm representing my state, and at no point will I feel like I'm betraying my university.

I'm outmatched by your intellect. Listen - you can cheer for whomever the fuck you like. But telling me I'm less of a Michigan fan because I'm supporting my state and conference in the national title game is weak sauce, in my opinion.

I may cheer for MSU for one reason: if they win, Izzo really won't have anything left to accomplish at MSU, and will take advantage of his current market worth, which has to be around $5 million. He can sign a mega-contract that will set him and his family up for life and simultaneously "scratch the NBA itch" while he still has a wide-open window of opportunity. The operative word, though, is "may." I won't know until game time which team I will cheer for. I won't really cheer on purpose; it will just happen on its own as a totally involuntary action. I guess, emotionally, it will come down to this: Am I able to delay the gratification of watching MSU lose now by cheering for them to lose Izzo and thus lose a lot more later?

I have been a huge Michigan fan my whole life, and a big UNC fan since 4th grade (1998). Everywhere I go in UNC gear I get called a bandwagon fan, some of which by people who were huge Michigan fans a week and a half ago. Tell me who the bigger bandwagon fan is? We are here cause we are Michigan fans, please don't jump on Sparty's dick now for any reason.

But I root against them every game. I don't want to seem like a douchebag, and when they lose games I don't call and gloat, hell even if I'm with them I will tell them "Man, that sucks, its too bad" but secretly, on the inside, I'm thinking "YEAAAAH FUCK STATE WHOOO HOOOOOO!!"

I can count on at least 3-4 calls whenever we lose, if we lose to sparty it's even worse. Sparty's don't even wait til it's over either, my older brother is also my "little brother", and he called me during the '04 game to give me shit in the fourth. Happily, that one turned out very well. He alone has not called me since (during a game anyway). Every other sparty fan I know harasses me.
