Michigan 45.5 point favorites over UMass

Submitted by Soulfire21 on

While point spreads may be nothing but talking points and things to bet on, I always find it interesting to follow them as one facet to guage how people feel about our team.  Saw that Michigan has opened as 45.5 favorites over the Minutemen.  This is the largest recorded spread in school history according to the full article at AnnArbor.com.  More than a 6 touchdown favorite?  With our offensive line, I'm not too confident about that.  If this game is close, I may hit the panic button.

The 17th-ranked Wolverines opened up this week as 45 1/2-point favorites against the Minutemen, the largest early point spread of any game in the country this week.

On top of that, Michigan's listing as more than a six-touchdown favorite this week is the largest recording point spread in school history, according to R.J. Bell, the Founder and CEO of popular betting site Pregame.com.

If we can post 50 or 60 points, it will be Russell Bellomy who will be doing it.  Denard won't play in the second half.  My big question is how many snaps will Jack "The President" Kennedy get?

btw:  I said none of this kind of thing before Appalachian State in '07.  As my friends know, before that game I said, "This is a classic trap game; those guys are champions every year.  It will not be an easy game."

I honestly don't care if we blow them out, i just this team to get it right. I have no doubt Michigan wins this game but I want them to get their crap together and be fundamentally sound. I'm not panicking but they really need to shore this up.

I like the VT pick, the ULM/Auburn game I've done 0 research on, and I have no idea what to make of the Badgers this year.

Here are my picks:

VT -10 @ Pitt

Ok St -22.5 vs UL-Lafayette

USC -10 @ Stanford (unfortunately this line is down to -9 now)

There are a few sites that are making mention of the fact that UMass will be without Kellen Pagel, so if anything affects this line at all, it may be that....perhaps. Actually, if you subtract his eight games out of their offensive totals from their last year in the CAA, you are left with UMass being 68 of 115 for 815 passing yards and all of 4 passing TDs (down from 13 - it creates the image of team that can kind of throw the ball a bit, but not a whole lot seems to happen). Pagel's rushing stats aren't enough to make a huge difference, although he made 2 rushing TD last year (out of their 19 rushing TDs). I imagine they miss him, but he hasn't been cleared to play since late last year, I think, due to a concussion.

and the points thank you.

REASONS WHY
1. Brady is not a run up the score kind of guy.
2. You saw the defense Saturday. (Save the triple option bs.)
3. IF Michigan gets up by 30 Brady will put freshman in for experience...oh wait, they're already playing aren't they.
4. Last time we played UMass we didn't cover the points.
5. This game is likely Bellamy's only shot at extensive playing time. Denard will be gone after the first series in the 3rd quarter, unless only up less than 24.

I have a feeling we don't cover.  I'm with others who think that Brady won't run up the score.

If I'm Coach Hoke, I'm sending my defense out for the shutout.  I know, I know "you always want to shutout your opponents", but our defense needs to get out there and out-physical a team.  No mercy for their offense.  And, yes, I think Hoke is fine with a shutout.

This game should be treated as a scrimmage(god willing). Work on perfecting a base O/D and work on fundamentals. The benches should be cleared in the 3ed to show nothing to ND, get ready for the bye then B1G play. I would say UM will not cover, but I'm the black cat of betting so bet the farm on UM.
