John U. Bacon: "If I had a guess" one year from now, Brad Bates will be the AD and one of the two Harbaughs will be the HC

Submitted by michgoblue on

John U. Bacon, just wrapped an interview on the Hugh Show.  When asked to guess who will be the HC of Michigan football one year from now, after giving several disclaimers and noting that it was just his guess, stated that one year from now, Brad Bates would be the AD and one of the two Harbaughs would be the HC.

He also said earlier in the interview that from talking to people who he knows who are close to Miles, Harbaugh and Harbaugh, he does not believe that any of that group would accept the HC spot with Brandon as AD.

Sorry, no link, as it was a radio interview.

... is great.  I highly respect him and loved his books.  However, he does have an ax to grind with DB (rightly so, IMO), so I'm curious how much of the, "They will not come if DB is here," is based on verified, legit sources (ie. Harbaughses or Miles) and how much of it is just grinding the ax.

However he feels about Brandon, there's no reason to put himself out there by guessing he's going to be ousted unless that's what he's hearing. He doesn't gain anything by just tossing it out there, and if he's wrong, he'll probably lose a smidge of credibility.

Has Herbstreit been impacted by this at all? He's on salary, and will work on Gameday forever. Bacon is trying to sell books, so it makes sense for him to take a Sam Webb approach. It seems most in our fanbase are desperate for any information, whether it's correct or not.

Was this guess more along the lines of, "Man, I have no idea, but I guess I'd go with a Harbaugh because I don't think any frontrunners have emerged," or "I actually think one of the Harbaughs is coming"?

Let's consider this before we get excited - how often is Bacon right/wrong with these types of things?

Also, making a guess means you should probably still bet on the field here.

It was a big discussion back in the day.  Ultimately, there's no way anyone can discern intent from the gif.  Anyone who's been fortunate enough to be in an incensed sports mob (insert M football joke here) knows that you randomly, accidently touch/hug/fall into/grab while falling/punch/kick a lot of random people.

It may happen with Jimmy Harbaugh.  The biggest downside to that would be the constant rumours of him jumping back to the NFL.  5 good years of Harbaugh would turn the program completely around though.

I guess the question is does Bacon have any real contacts in either Harbaugh camp.  It's pretty clear that he knows people around the school and athletic department, so I would give some credence to Brandon being out and Bates being in, but saying one of the Harbaughs would come would require some contacts pretty close to either Harbaugh.  Even people that "know" either one probably aren't getting the straight scoop from the Harbaughs.

I always doubt people that say "coach x would absolutely take job y if offerred."  It's never that simple...  For instance, would Les Miles have taken the job in 2007?  I'll always have my doubts.  I just don't think a coach who is about to play for a national championship is leaving for another college job.

came out he addressed the Harbaugh situation.  It was put to Bacon as to why harbaugh didnt' come to Michigan.  From what I recall. he said that whoever he talked to who knew Harbaugh.  All Harbaugh ever did was talk about Michigan.  I never heard him elaborate further on that point only to suggest that Harbaugh wanted the job very much.  He alluded to some disconnect between that and the hiring of Brady Hoke.  He left it for his audience to fill in the blanks.  So he has believed for years that Harbaugh has wanted to come back, and from what he is saying as of late, that is true, but neither of the Harbaugh's will work for Dave Brandon.

Brady Hoke is a beautiful man.

Full of hugs and claps and a warmth that turns boys into men with a michigan coat.

The kind of coat that will shimmer in the misty mornings of fall.

Football is a game of heathens.

Life is a game of gentlemen and snifters and fine cigars.

Perhaps a fireplace or two.

Grandchildren.

Folks...all of the speculation and talk of Brandon getting fired is hurtful to him.  Let us not dwell on his failures.  Let us not talk of the bumblebee uniforms, the jock jamz, the herding of student ticketholders, the raising of ticket prices, the terrible schedule and whatnot.  Dave doesn't want us talking about these things and we should honor his delicate sensibilities.

... I just had this image in my head of an employee of Dave Brandon complaining about his feelings being hurt when Dave was being critical of him during a 1 on 1 meeting.

"Dave, I understand that I'm supposed to put coversheets on the new TPS reports, but you're really hurting my feelings.  My family is hurt by it.  My son, he's embarrassed to even be seen in public with me.  Can you lighten up, a little?"

Winning the lottery would be great too. So would beating PSU eleventy-billion to 0. If I had to guess, Bacon is being optimistic and wrong.

I'd love it if he's right though.

I know there are more important things I ask about from time to time, but if you are in a "filling my hands with blessings" kind of mood this year, it would be nice if this made it into the basket.
