If we win the NIT, will we hang a banner…

Submitted by Blue Texan on March 14th, 2023 at 12:13 PM

… that says:  We 69!

all jokes aside, the NIT became irrelevant when the NCAA went to 64 teams. The NCAA then rubbed salt in the wound by increasing it to 68 teams.

Does anyone care to compete to become the 69th best team?

Yes, if Michigan wins a tournament they'll probably hang a banner commemorating that win.

I get that people are disappointed they aren't going to the NCAA tournament but I would like to think that the actual athletes competing in the NIT still take it seriously and if they win would like to be remembered for it.

I live in Raleigh and NC State does the same thing for the NCAA Tournament.  It's a little tough for them to live in the shadow of UNC and Duke so they'll hang a banner for ANYTHING (like making a bowl game).  They retired Philip Rivers' jersey during his last home game.....while he was still actively playing!

I find it mind boggling how many people post on almost every single thread that "This should not be a thread," especially in the OT season.  I don't post much, however, I do come to this board every single day and read the board.  If every thread that someone thinks should not be a thread was removed there just wouldn't be enough content to keep me coming back regularly.

My bad.  Replied to the wrong post.

I personally wouldn't want to hang a banner celebrating winning a tournament that no one cares about. Banners should recognize you as being among the best in the country. You could win every NIT game by 40 and the narrative will still be "Its the NIT, dude. There's still at least 68 teams in America that are considered better than you.

But its not my team, so I don't (and shouldn't) get a vote. If Juwan and Co. win the NIT and want to hang a banner for it, that is their call to make.

It really bothers me when people say this.  The NCAA tournament is not based upon the top 68 teams.  If it was, we would be in and Texas Southern wouldn't.  The Texas Southern Tigers are in the field of 68.  Their record this year is 14-20 with a SWAC conference record of 7-11.  Their NET rank is 294.  I'm not complaining about not getting in or the format, I'm just saying that there are not 68 better teams than us.

It's a disappointing season for everyone, but if I was Dug McDaniel and I play a great NIT tournament, I would say that was the stepping stone to next year.

BTW, Michigan holds the 2nd highest win percentage in the NIT behind UCLA at 0.781.

Let's get better as a team, win this thing and hang a banner.

You must not really understand how the tournament works, unless you think Drake or Farleigh Dickinson are better than M.  Automatic bids will always keep better teams out.

If they win and hang a banner, I have no issue with that.  I’m glad they are playing the NIT.  A team is only gonna get better if they play actual games.  Otherwise they’d be sitting around, pondering the transfer portal options, etc.

Yes.  And it's not irrelevant.  It's an opportunity to play more basketball.  The only downer with the NIT is that it's no longer in NY

I care about the growth of our players.  This tournament still gives them competitive exposure to other conferences, theoretically better officiating, and a jump start on rule changes for next year.

If they win, they should... but unless something changes I don't see them going far in the NIT.

If you can't be with one you love, love the one you're with.

Celebrating maybe the best NCAA team ever to not win a championship?  10 years ago I might have agreed with you but I think it’s time to let the Fab 5 go.  Other than Juwan(obv), none of them have been very active at the university and quite frankly, these guys weren’t and aren’t exactly saints.  I’m just not sure they deserve to continue to be worshipped by this fan base.
