Horford to transfer for Final Year

Submitted by kzooblue2016 on

It looks like Jon Horford will transfer after he graduates in May. No word on what program he is heading too, but best of luck to him.  Time for big man speculation!!!

Wake me up when all the rumors/moves are done. I trust Beilein to have a good team next season. Who would have thought we would have the best season in memory when McGary went down?

Why do you so quickly rule out the possibility that he is transferring because UofM does not offer a graduate program of which he has an interest in. He likely isn't going to be playing basketball professionally and why would he stay at a school that he isn't going to earn a graduate degree in a field he wants to when he can easily transfer and become immediately eligible to play basketball?

...CHAMPIONS!

Let's just remember that Horford had every opportunity to shine. He was beat out by others and didn't exactly impress consistently during games.

That's a fact, jack.

two weeks ago that he was coming back and looking forward to being a leader on the team.  But something has influenced him into changing his mind.  Whether that was learning who was coming back and his playing time prospects, or his desire to explore new opportunities, or a trusted advisor telling him something, it's hard to say.  But, if he really thinks he has some chance of getting to the NBA, it's not logical to me that he can improve his chances by going to another program.  Michigan gets a lot of national exposure and has excellent coaches.  If he wants to get to the NBA, his challenge is elevating his own game, irrespective of what program he's playing for.  Either way, I wish him the best of luck.

Of his abilities. No objective observer would say that Horford wasn't given all of the opportunity here he deserved. If this is really just because he is upset about not getting more playing time here then I think we need to retire the philosopher meme and replace it with the typical me-first agenda and requisite handlers/uncles advising him meme. Pretty disappointing if that is the case

The Freep's Shawn Windsor got some quotes from Horford that shed at least a bit of light on his thinking:

"Feels like the right time to make a move," Horford told the Free Press this afternoon. "I accomplished a lot of the goals I had. I don't know where I'm going yet, but I'm going somewhere else to get an opportunity to play the game the way I know I can play. There is a better fit for me out there. I just have to find the right fit."

...

"My teammates know what my goals are. I hated to have to leave them being as close with those guys as I am. But they know I have to do what I have to do."

Anna Horford (@AnnaHorford) Few know all that my brother has been through & how much he's truly contributed at UM. All I can say is there's good reason for him leaving.

Anna Horford (@AnnaHorford) Jon WILL be going to a great school next year. Many colleges know how good he is even though he didn't get much opportunity to prove it @ UM

Jon got the playing time he deserved. I've lost a lot of respect for Jon. Thought he was better than that to be listening to the hangers-on whispering in his ears about how he should be playing more and showcasing his skills. He has zero chance of making a major impact at anywhere beyond a mid major program.

Oh. My. God.
there must be sparties in their ear. Isnt he from lansing and spurned by them? anyway, he had alot of upside but never realized it. When smotrycz left i said good riddance as if he wanted to go, then go. im disappointed with horford leaving but the same thing applies now...the sister implying dirt here pisses me off.

Agreed. He wouldn't start on most B10 teams. He's got some agility and finesse. But he's also a "big" who can't cover or score against other bigs. He'll thrive in a smaller league.

as late at game 17 of the B1G season, it seemed like horford had more upside than morgan (i thought morgan took it up a notch senior night and tourney, obviously).

disapointed to lose him. always saw potential, and empathized w/ him for all the injuries. good luck to him.

im w/ the group that thinks this means mcgary is back. between donnal (very high on him) and mcgary, no minutes for horford. i dont think mcgary and horfod could play together, at least not in beilein's offense.

Starting to sound like Horford thinks he is more talented than Beilein does.  At least based on what his sister is saying.  He obviously feels he has something to prove somewhere else and he wasn't going to get the pt here for whatever reason.  That sucks, but I'm pretty sure I trust Beilein at this point.  It's Horford's life and he should do what he thinks is best, though I personally would have had a transfer lined up before making the announcement......

Well I hope this means McGary is coming back and Donnal has the 4 locked down, but Horford doesn't seem like your average guy. It might be totally random...but if he doesn't know what McGary is doing, why would he leave a 50/50 shot at being the starter for a top 10-20 team?

At least we'll probably know within a week or two what's all going on here. Mitch don't leave! We're doomed without you.

Best to Jon.

Like him I was a bit of a dreamer / wanderer.  After college I have lived in six states.  What I miss the most is living in Ann Arbor.  What I would give to be there as a student for one more year.  And I say that having been to 48 states.  There is plenty of time to explore.  Sounds like Jon wants to start now; or go to grad school elsewhere.  Regardless - thank you Jon.  You will always be a Michigan Man and good luck!

himself and his I will open up what I know... I had family on the team during his time frame. I mentioned earlier that he doesn't love bball. He literally only plays because he was brought into it, his brother loves the game, he does not like playing it. I don't want to say he doesn't put in the effort to be better but the kid/guy whatever doesn't play with desire or passion, he doesn't want to be great, he just doesn't like basketball. Maybe he is looking for an easy starting job, I don't know but I know my uncle told me 2 years ago to not get high hopes on him, he hates playing bball and is nothing like his brother. I have no hate towards him, I don't think he's quitting at all, he wants to probably start with no challenge, the easy road with no pressure. He's not out to win a title, I promise you that, I almost think he doesn't like the pressure on him since he doesn't like his job aka basketball.

Shut up with your petty fourth-party misinformation.

If he "didn't like basketball" he wouldn't have played for 4 years at the collegiate level.  If he didn't like basketball, he'd just graduate and move on in life.  The fact that he's transferring with the intention to continue his playing career is pretty obvious evidence that he likes playing basketball.

I'm so sick of people assuming a player doesn't like the game or is not competitive because he is quiet or reserved.  The best player I ever coached happened to also be the quietest and most reserved player.  Just because someone doesn't wear their emotions on their sleeve doesn't mean they don't care.

your older brother got a scholarship for playing bball would you go that route to get into school. Why do you think guys retire young? Quit? I am 100% certain he does not love bball, 6 months ago I talked with my family member, looked at his big ten championship ring, his final four ring and I know everything about these kids that the staff know. Horford is a great kid but bball isn't his dream.

I know everything about these kids that the staff know.

Hilarious.  Even if you're telling the truth, you're telling it through the second-hand opinion of a college kid.  Hell, you're mis-logic is enough for me to think you're putting your own spin onto whatever you may have been told.

Regardless, if you're telling the truth, you're acting like more of a child than whomever your relative on the team is.  Nobody cares that you have a relative with a Final Four ring.  That doesn't make their view on another player correct, nor does it make your view correct.

Again, if he doesn't like basketball and he has earned his degree, why would he transfer to continue playing?

Grow up and stop bashing on a Michigan student-athlete.

at his sis saying he wants to play more. He's probably looking at school beyond the degree but I shouldn't say much more. I hope he gets what he wants. I shouldn't feel the need to validate,my mistake. He's a great young man, I wish him the best. I was just trying to say what I know, Morgan feared McGary and worked hard before he came to not lose his job, Horford didn't because he didn't have that desire. He is more school focused then bball which I respect and prefer my kids to be. I hope he lands somewhere stress free and plays with out needing to prove anything.

I'm not doubting your connection to the team, and I won't knock you for sharing your info. I've seen him play with a certain passion or possibly even anger at times.
There was the article back in early march about his own development and relationship with the game. He doesn't keep trophies or awards. He never seemed to enjoy the celebrations the way the rest of the team did.
The refreshing thing about Horford is that it seemed like he had interests beyond the game. The game wasn't the end all be all for him. He seems articulate and seems to have the ability to think critically. He used basketball as a tool to get an education from a top school. I can't knock him for that.

Like someone else has said maybe he is transferring to say Stanford or Harvard. I'd go to one of those schools for grad degree before Michigan if I did undergrad at UM.
