I'm looking forward to "throwback helmet" day. Granted, we'll be at a severe disadvantage with the leather helmets, but at least we won't have to worry about getting cauliflower ear.

They're just newer helmet designs that are supposed to reduce concussions and injuries more than the older Riddell ones. And they look cooler Old Riddell: http://www.riddell1.com/newsite/product_info.php?cPath=104_76_106&produ… Revolution: http://www.riddell1.com/newsite/product_info.php?cPath=104_76_105&produ… Schutt: http://www.schuttsports.com/aspx/Sport/ProductCatalog.aspx?id=787

RR announced he's going to tweak the old helmets a bit so he can incorporate the new Adidas rocket packs on the back of the jersey. The three stripes are being extended further down the neck so they can be used for steering. The wings in front will stay on the helmet, but they will be retractable -- kind of look like devil horns when they're deployed. The athletic department has promised the helmet changes will incorporate the newest technology to maximize our team's performance on the field, but still maintain Michigan's great tradition.

As a lawyer representing colleges and universities, I have heard from time to time that "better" equipment (e.g., helmets) actually makes the game more dangerous in a way - players think they can fly at people like projectiles, or pile drive their heads into the ground. The argument is that if people still wore leather helmets, they would be a little more circumspect in their play. Not that it matters because no one will go backward in the safety equipment arena. But maybe we should get rid of helmets, seat belts and airbags. Hmm.
