Great Story on Dual Big Ten Champ Joey Velazquez
Angelique Chengelis has a wonderful story in today's Detroit News on the player who won a Big Ten championship in both baseball AND football. Joey!
LINK.
Has someone researched the last Michigan player to win a Big Ten championship in both football and baseball? Was it Rick Leach? Michigan won the Big Ten baseball championship in 1975, 76 and 78, and it won (or tied) for the football championship in 1976, 77 and 78. Has anyone done it since Ricky?
behind paywall can't read
mike Gillette might have
I think he was the last one. He even played a few years of minor league baseball. Todd Collins may have pitched in a few games, but that was after the glory years of the 80s. It's great to see multi-sport players in the collegiate level. Few have the success of Charlie Ward or Deion Sanders, but it's great to see them give it a shot.
Few have the success of Charlie Ward or Deion Sanders
Point taken, but I feel obligated to mention Bo Jackson.
Gillette's stats for those interested:

of course because Gillette: the best a man can get
Barry Larkin was on the FB team for a hot minute, but I'm not sure he got a ring
It was a good story. Thanks for posting.
Wasn’t there a QB in the’00s that did it?
richard Childers or something close to that…
Clayton Richards was a UM QB and pitched in MLB for a decade. He pitched for one season at Michigan but did not win any titles.
FUN FACT: Clayton Richard is the only UM quarterback to ever lose a game in the Metrodome. Granted, he did it while pitching for the White Sox, but still.
Joey is a family favorite of ours! This article is behind a paywall, so I can't see it. But trust me when I tell you, kid bleeds maize and blue, and that's not easy, growing up in the shadows of The Shoe in Columbus. One of the nicest young men too! His dad, I believe, will be coaching Ryan Day's kid next year in 8th grade football.
Cool. Thanks for the info.
Now there's a kid who was born half way to home plate..
How about a B1G championship in baseball and a national championship in hockey? Matt Herr. Baseball 97’ and hockey 97/98.
