if we lose tomorrow.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:18 PM ^
Would have loved to have him tomorrow/this season. Does he still have eligibility?
Imagine where our concerns if Angry Michigan Secondary God would have allowed us Woolfolk and D-Warren back there this year. Ohh well, I suppose, time for the new guys to step up.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:36 PM ^
Once he declared for the draft, that was it for his eligibility. The NCAA doesn't let football players change their minds and come back to school, even though it does for basketball players. Go figure. Even more obnoxious is that football players must make up their minds three months before the draft, whereas basketball players have until a couple weeks before the draft to make their final decision. I don't understand this double-standard at all.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:09 PM ^
I feel like it's even more of a double standard for HS/ college baseball players. Particularly the guys "advised" by Scott Boras who routinely use the chance that they might accept a scholarship as leverage to get better contracts. I guess withouth this loophole there wouldn't be much talent in the college baseball ranks, but it would have been nice if Warren could have tried the draft with an "advisor" and then come back when he went undrafted.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:21 PM ^
... but he should have seen this coming; another early departure hits the Reality Wall.
Eligibility? He signed with an agent, he's gone for good long ago.
I guess he earned a few extra credits at the College of Hard Knocks. Hopefully he recovers from the concussion and catches on somewhere else...
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:42 PM ^
he didn't meet Ernest Shazor earlier.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:25 PM ^
Good luck to you DW.
Life is full of choices, hopefully DW and all of us, can learn from the bad ones and make the most of the good ones.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:25 PM ^
He'll probably land on another team (I hear the Ravens are seriously looking for a CB), and I wish him the best. I can't completely blame him for leaving - everyone was calling him a first-day draft pick, but somehow he just kept dropping. He's too talented not to find a home, but it would probably have been in his best interests to stick around for another year. Just a bad break all around.

September 3rd, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
Are you trying to say that people are responsible for their own decisions? How dare you.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
I completely agree. Maybe I'm just bitter about him leaving when he was most needed. But we all knew he wasn't NFL material yet (I emphasize yet).
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:46 PM ^
While it ultimately was his decision, I don't think it's fair that the NCAA has one set of rules for basketball players thinking of leaving early and another for football players. Why is it OK for hoops players to test the waters, go to the camps and then pull out of the draft, but not football players? It makes even less sense when you consider that basketball teams have only 13 scholarships, so each one is theoretically much more valuable than any one football scholarship. It's backwards.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:57 PM ^
I agree with you on these rules, but he was aware of the rules and he still chose to go. You could use this as an example of why the rules should be changed, but I don't think we can blame the system for his misfortune.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:02 PM ^
Yes, but I think we have to acknowledge that 20-year-olds are going to make a lot of stupid decisions. We should reform the system so that this particular decision doesn't have to be career-threatening.
September 3rd, 2010 at 6:16 PM ^
he projects to a free safety in the pros (he's too slow for nfl corner). it's likely that he clears waivers and signs with the jets' practice squad, in my opinion anyway
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:27 PM ^
Sad to know that he probably wishes he was playing tomorrow instead of being out of a job. Hopefully he finds a home soon.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:28 PM ^
to think, Michigan at one point was coming into the season with arguably the Big 10's best CB duos in Warren and Woofolk, a 5 star third CB in Justin Turner, and had just signed arguably the best DB in the country in Demar Dorsey. now, 3 are gone for good, and 1 is out for the season.
those losses have my confidence shaken when it comes to the ND game. if the defense pulls us out of that one then they can make me a believer.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:40 PM ^
It just goes to show how effective the Angry Michigan Hating God can be.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:43 PM ^
Did Dorsey get in anywhere? I thought he Louisville would let him in. It would be awesome if he went to a JUCO for a semester or two, then got into Michigan. Dorsey, Woolfolk, and 5 more freshmen DBs to add to the roster could make our defense serviceable next year.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:28 PM ^
Michigan doesn't often let JUCO transfers because the credits can almost never transfer. The only one from recent memory that I can remember was Austin Panter.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:29 PM ^
I'd like to believe that this would be a cautionary tale for anyone else thinking of leaving early, but I know that agents will continue to lie to players about their draft stock to lure them out. I despise them.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:30 PM ^
Needs a job as a meteorologist. Dude has made some bad calls.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:35 PM ^
can he still be on the practice squad?
i was under the impression that the 53 man roster suits up on sundays, while the full count with practice squad was around 75. I thought i heard this on hard knocks.
I never understood why he went to this team. they have revis, cromartie (and his 47 three year olds), and drafted a cb with early draft picks. seemed prettyt hard to make it from the start.
Come on down tothe lions if he cant be on the practice squad
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:38 PM ^
Yes, but the practice squad is a pretty crappy way to go.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:08 PM ^
I'd take an 8k a week pay check and a chance to be called up to the 53 man roster over many other career choices
September 3rd, 2010 at 9:15 PM ^
practice squad is 5 players.
September 3rd, 2010 at 11:19 PM ^
The practice squad is 8 players, and has been so for a while.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:36 PM ^
Good luck in your future endeavors DW. Keep working hard, there is a spot for you in the NFL somewhere. GO BLUE
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:39 PM ^
But he should have stayed. His help would have been most welcomed this year, but what's done is done.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
Practice squad for a couple teams for a couple years - then he will "retire" from NFL
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:56 PM ^
For those of you who said he wasn't NFL ready, I don't know quite what to say. Could he have used an extra year? For sure. Should he have stayed? MOST DEFINITELY. Do I as a fan and Mich alumnus feel betrayed? You bet.
However, as the article states, Warren was released after not seeing the field for a significant amount of time due to a concussion. This implies it was more a health issue and that they couldn't count on him in a limited roster spot. Go with the healthy guy.
If he's able to get past these concussions, he'll make a team somewhere, at the very least for a practice squad till he can show what he's got.
September 3rd, 2010 at 7:41 PM ^
He was clearly too slow to play CB in the NFL. They tried him at safety but it wasn't working out. The comments coming out of the Jets camp while he was healthy weren't exactly promising either.
Who knows if he'll ever make it onto a 53 man roster. I think there would have to be some significant changes for that to happen.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:56 PM ^
There are no shortcuts in life.
But there's an upshot:
This is another feather in the cap for the Brandon Graham route: have a good junior year, come back, hit it extra hard in the offseason, play lights out as a senior, get drafted high, put some $$ in the bank, and start off the NFL career as ready as possible.
And all this can happen completely independent of the team's record during that senior year.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:00 PM ^
would have been drafted in '09. Warren might still not have iin '11. People llke to make this comparison but its pretty weak.
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:57 PM ^
Warren does not equal Woodson
Did any Michigan corner except Woodson leave early and get drafted?
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:59 PM ^
I could have told you a couple years ago.
September 3rd, 2010 at 6:42 PM ^
I can't think of any more recent examples...
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:58 PM ^
Man, was I wrong....
I still think most people overvalue staying an extra year, but if you're not going to make a roster theres a pretty good chance you made the wrong choice.
Its too bad. No one wins here.

Drew Rosenhaus. Warren's agent.
Drew Rosenhaus, if you never ever bring your sorry Miami-Duke ass back to Ann Arbor, it will be too soon. Screw you, you hateful, dumb, arrogant prick. If you advised Donovan to enter the NFL draft, you gave him crappy advice. If you failed to advise Donovan to stay at Michigan, you were a crappy advisor. If you failed to impress upon him the seriousness of the decision that he was making by signing with you, which instantly ended his career as a student and athlete at Michigan, you'd have committed malpractice.
I hope every Michigan coach, every Michigan player, every parent and every member of the Michigan family has your name written down as someone who is a selfish shyster, an enemy of the Michigan football program, and one who should be avoided at all costs.
You can argue that Warren is an adult, that he had advice and support and friends and counsel of his own, and that this was his decision to make. That's all well and good. But the guy who now has no explanation is Drew Rosenhaus. He's the "professional." He's the guy who, people are supposed to think, is so smart. If Rosenhaus were such a good judge of NFL talent -- his business, he claims -- why didn't he counsel Warren; "There's a good chance you won't get drafted and might not make a roster..." ? Why not, "Wait; there is some time. You can do a couple of workouts that won't jeopardize your eligibility. Think a while longer about this..." ?
September 3rd, 2010 at 6:35 PM ^
i believe that the NFL has an "independent" (non-interested) panel to help college players evaluate their draft stock.
regardless, rosenhaus did not "advise" warren to run a 4.7 40 at the combine, and run even slower at pro day. if he runs a 4.4, he becomes joe haden. more reasonably, 4.55 gets him in where everyone projected. (4.25, and al davis trades up to #1 to take him)
so unless you wanted rosenhaus to pull out a stopwatch and hold an audition for the right to be represented, you are misplacing the consequences of poor performance on the agent. i am positive that if you asked warren what his combine 40 would be, he would not tell you "4.7, what can you do for me?"
the jets gave him a run at free safety, not because they're stocked at corner, but because he is too slow to play there in the pros. if you really believe that superagent drew rosenhaus took time out of his important GTL day to make promises to a mid-round draft pick, you are looking for any excuse to absolve the 21 year old kid.
September 3rd, 2010 at 9:41 PM ^
Drew Rosenhaus loses nothing in this. He was in it for a piece of Warren's contract, if Warren got signed. Drew Rosenhaus now just goes on to the next group of Seniors and Juniors, bird-dogging for prospects.
Donovan Warren is, as you say, a 21 year old kid. Who has now made a dreadful mistake.
But of course, as I say, I am not going to cry over Warren. I'd just like to tell the next group of juniors and seniors with eligibility, to stay away from Drew Rosenhaus. What a classy bunch of guys he represents, in any event...
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:36 PM ^
Donavan Warren and Manny Harris. But I will them the best in their professional career.
September 3rd, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
I'm thinking there will be a news story soon about how RichRod went to the Jets staff and talked them into cutting him (of course that was after he did Warren the way he did Trent in the draft).
September 3rd, 2010 at 4:51 PM ^
For those just blaming Warren, yeah he messed up, but it goes beyond the players. There are so many players every year that are told "Yeah, you'll go in rounds 1-3!" and either don't get drafted or are 7th round picks.
RR said himself the papers from the NFL hadn't even come back yet before Donovan made his decision.. I want to see who all these guys are that are lying/misleading these college players. (Agents anyone?)
September 3rd, 2010 at 8:06 PM ^
You can't say a lot about Michigan players going in the 7th (last?) round of the draft.
Ask Mr. Brady
September 3rd, 2010 at 6:19 PM ^
He's probably wishing he could play tomorrow for us. It was a boneheaded decision. He was a good college DB, but I don't know who told him he'd be a 1st or 2nd round pick.
September 3rd, 2010 at 7:38 PM ^
How about Detroit? We could use talent like Warren on the Lions. Especially young talent like him, we can't run on Dre Bly forever.
