Define family values. Ohio State - cash benefits, 'roids (Reynolds... Boren...), clarett-like lifestyle, DUIs, Unsportsmanlike penalties in scrimmages (TP), and so on. Michigan - not giving a scholarship to a bad player because his brother goes here. Ah that makes sense.

I'm going to nominate this post for the 'worst quote taken out of context award' of the month. I really hope you win, you did a great job cherry picking this article! Boren, while you might not like the guy, plays on the Oline. Having a mean streak while the play is ongoing is mostly normal.

I think the post was made to show the hypocrisy of Boren complaining about the coaches swearing at them during practices. Let's be honest, he didn't leave Michigan due to "eroding family values". He didn't like being yelled at, and now he's the one doing the "screaming and cussing and [stuff]"

When Boren left, he and his father made comments about a lack of family values. The cussing by the coaches was considered a detraction. The fact that Boren is said to be "screaming and cussing" sounds a bit hypocritical, if that was a reason he left Michigan. Then again, the "lack of family values" (according to my theory) was more of a dig at Rich Rodriguez for refusing to offer Zach Boren a scholarship. Lloyd Carr had promised to take on Zach. When Rodriguez arrived, he - rightfully, in my opinion - didn't think Zach was worthy of a scholarship and therefore didn't offer him one. The Borens got pissed and Justin transferred to OSU where he could play with his brother. Justin Boren being "nasty" is irrelevant. The OP considered the cussing to be the bigger issue.

Was it the cussing and yelling by the staff or was it the fact that Coach RR did'nt honor as legacy scholly for a kid that did not deserve one. Now his own team says he cursing and plays nasty. smacks of hypocracy to me.

meant he was upset that: a) he could not leave on the weekends any more so he could go home and breastfeed; and b) RR was not willing to give his brother a schollie.. His talent level is pretty good, at least for run-blocking, even though he is a whiny, no-class "Bor(e)n Blue, Traitor by Choice."

I always interpreted the family values quote as about the cussing and screaming second and about the snowplowing first. RR wouldn't give the Boren Loser (I like this name) special treatment and let him miss a few practices, and BL didn't like it and threw a hissy fit.

Said it best. To add my own slant, THE Human Twinkie is definitely a big, AND I MEAN BIG, hypocrite. He reminds me of adults, years ago, who used to tell a much younger me to "quit your Goddam swearing." And, for anyone who feels that Boren is sustaining too much undue criticism: it seems like a couple of people here feel that it is OK to rail on fellow UM fans in the forum but not OK to make the same kind of comments about an OSU football player. In other words, fellow posters deserve to be flamed while OSU football players deserve to be deified. It makes me wonder if they are really UM fans at all. In related "news," I hear that the new conditioning program at OSU is to either run around the horseshoe ten times or run around Boren once.

He was not. As evidenced by Chad Henne's injuries in the 2007 campaign. UM suffered a lot of sacks on Boren's watch. That entire OL was horrible in 2007, but Boren did not play well in the run blocking nor pass blocking. I think it will be really interesting to see whether he improves under Jim Bollman's tutelage. If Boren does improve, then it only will serve to prove how inept UM's OL coaching and conditioning has been the last few years under Carr (Andy Moeller? Mike Gittleson?). I understand the need to lead a bandwagon of hate against the guy. Part of that is justified in my view, because no one in the Boren family can keep their mouth shut and just play. But I suspect Boren will earn a starting role for OSU this fall and that he will perform better than in the past. Maybe that is what UM fans are afraid to observe this year in Boren. Truth be told, Ohio St. can use all the help it can get on the offensive front because even with all of those high-caliber recruits, their OL did not play particularly well last fall either. The 2009 OSU-UM game in Ann Arbor is going to be a lot of fun though, because I think we'll see a UM team in bowl contention with the setting and backstories of Terrell Pryor, Justin Boren, Rodriguez and maybe some ill-advised Tate Forcier pre-game guarantees sprinkled in. Who knows?

Yes, this story turned into a real mess, and a seriously unfair attack on Rodriguez, the moment that the Boren family released their home-made press release saying that the Michigan football program had lost its "family values" under RR. 2. The 'Lost its family values' claim against Michigan is a bad joke, coming from Mike Boren. (It was Mike, while playing as linebacker for Bo in the late 70's-early 80's, who was called "Boron", semi-lovingly, semi-mockingly, by Bo Schembechler.) Mike Boren used to scream and swear at his sons during halftimes of their football games such that Justin once said (and was quoted in the Detroit Free Press saying) "I thought they might have to call the cops" [on his psycho-dad Mike]. 3. A lot of stories popped up immediately, as people speculated about just what the heck "family values" meant. People knew that RR ran a tough and intense program, so people just jumped to the conclusion that RR was to hard and foul-mouthed for the Borens (a bad joke, as I stated), or that Justin couldn't take the punishing RR/Barwis conditioning. Both theories, based as they are on pure speculation, are untrue. 4. The reason that the Borens used that phrase, "family values," and the true reason that Justin was suddenly and summarily pulled out of Michigan at an otherwise unremarkable time in the off-season is this: When 2009 freshman class shcolarship offer letters were sent out by the RR staff, Justin Boren's litle brother Zach didn't get one. Mike Boren had expected a kind of legacy scholarship for his middling 2-star youngest son, and when it didn't come, he blew up. He dragged Justin out of school in a rage. 5. The story on little brother Zach Boren is this, and it parallels the Justin story. Zach was at Pickerington North H.S. (just east of Columbus). North was where Justin had gone. But Zach wasn't developing as his dad had hoped. Zach was getting recruited by a couple of MAC schools, only. OSU didn't recruit him. Nobody else seriously recruited him. For some good reasons. First, everybody thought he was a lock to go to Michigan. Zach wanted to go there, and Mike presumed he'd be going there. But Zach had done badly at some Michigan camps. And he was a middling FB/LB 'tweener. 6. Before Zach's senior year in H.S., Mike pulled Zach out of Pickerington North, and enrolled him in Pickerington Central. To get him into a football program program Mike thought was better. Word is that Mike got an apartment across town for Zach, to get him into Central. (Sound like any other Borens you know?) 7. THE DAY AFTER 2009 offer letters came out and Zach didn't get one from Michigan, Justin Boren quit Michigan. The two quotes coming from the Boren family were revealing -- Michigan had "lost its family values" and Mike Boren said, "I will not have my two sons playing for two different universities." Huh, Mike? Well, he got his wish when OSU gave the Borens a package deal. As soon as Justin left Michigan, OSU gave Zach a look. Zach was clearly the lowest-rated recruit in the OSU class. He was a rider, essentially, on a deal to bring in Justin. 8. Let's be clear about Justin Boren. He's a helluva football player. He was good at Michigan. He's playing remarkably well for OSU, right now, on a dinged leg. Justin is not bad, or fat, or lazy, or unskilled, or any of those things. He does have an apparently weird kind of relationship with his dad, such that Justin never spent any time in Ann Arbor when he didn't have to for football. Every non-football weekend, he'd drive back to Columbus (Pickerington) and work in his dad's landscaping & snow plowing business. 9. We could have used Justin last year; we needed him, and he was lost to Michigan's badly-damaged 2008 cause. OSU got a good player, and maybe a good kid, in Justin Boren. From what I've seen, Justin is OSU's best OL player right now. 10. But here's the real point. For more than a year, Rich Rodriguez got hammered in the press for the Boren story. Everybody launched their own theory about "family values" and what RR had presumably done to damage it at Michigan. Instead of firing back at the Borens, RR just kept his mouth shut, focused on the program and the kids that he had, and let his reputation take the hit that it did. There are really just two take-aways from the Boren story, and none of them have much to do with Justin, or even Zach. The first takeaway is that Mike Boren is a psycho-dad. The other takeaway is that Rich Rodriguez is a principled gentleman.
