Is a 7 Seed Within Reach?

Submitted by wayneandgarth on

I think with this decisive IL win, we may see Bracketology move Mich to an 8 seed.

What will it take to move out of the 8-9 slot for the NCAA Tourney?  Will beating Purdue do it?  Reach the B1G final game or win it?

I'm leaning toward a Purdue win doing it versus needing to get to the B1G final game.

Palm was on 97.1 the other morning and basically said 7 is the ceiling for Michigan but that would pretty much take winning the big ten tournament.

For the record here is where it stands on bracket matrix, you are rooting against these teams:

6: Minnesota, Maryland, Iowa State, St. Marys

7: Wisconsin, Creighton, Dayton, Oklahoma State

8:Miami, South Carolina, VTech, Wichita State

9: Arkansas, Michigan, Northwestern, VCU

Miami lost to UNC today, Iowa State beat Oklahoma State, St. Marys lost to Gonzaga in their conference final, Wichita State won their conference and is done

VT plays FSU tonight, Northwestern plays Rutgers, Dayton plays Davidson tomorrow, Minnesota and MD both don't know who they are playing yet because of double byes, same with South Carolina, VCU is also awaiting a TBD opponent after a bye.

That's the best way to think about it. I think if we beat Purdue we at least move up to an 8, but some 6-7 teams in front of us will have to lose as well.

That all being said, if we manage to win the BTT, I don't think it matters what happens in front of us. We will at least move down to a 7 in that scenario.

Big game against Purdue.  We beat Purdue, great chance we move up to 7 or 6.  Honestly, you have to be able to beat anyone in the Tourney to win and we are going in playing with some pretty good confidence (regardless of Purdue result).  Lower seeds will not want to face us.  Let the chips fall where they may.  Put us anywhere.  We will be a threat.

Gotta say, Irvin is looking much better lately which couldn't have come at a better time.  MAAR is playing his best right now.  Walton is possessed.  DJ and Mo can really make it hard on other teams.  I think Robinson has been pretty quiet but during March Madness, he could catch fire.  Let's dance!!

Too many quality wins.  So much momentum.  Complete team, with strength at each position, and a few high quality bench contributors (Robinson, Simpson).  Beat PU and I think our worst case is a 6

My completely unsubstantiated opinion is that a BTT Finals appearance would be necessary. Just beating the Spoilerschnooks wouldn't quite be enough.

I don't think we're as locked into the 8-9 seed as everyone thinks we are. One reason is that, although our season-long performance would seem to indicate a seed in that range, we've been a much better team lately, and who knows how the selection committee handles that. Another reason is that if we beat Purdue, which is totally possible, we'll have another big-time win on our resume. I think we can easily rise above the 8-9 range.

Just win the game. And the next one, and the next one. Seeding will solve itself. Some factors:

  • If we win Big 10 Tournament, 5 teams ahead of us in the Big 10 (Purdue, Maryland, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Northwestern) all lost. With three of them losing to Michigan.
  • Miami, Oklahoma State, St. Marys, and Virginia Tech all lost. Currently all seeded on 6 - 9 line in bracketology.
  • Dayton, Creighton, South Carolina, Iowa State, Arkansas, VCU all play today. All seeded on 6 - 9 line. Root against them. One or more of them likely to lose today.

I could easily see 12 or 13 of the teams on the 6 - 9 bracket line losing. (I think Wichita State and Iowa State could win.)

What this means is I think if we when the BTT, Michigan could easily be on the 6 line. And if enough teams on the 1 - 5 lines lose (Purdue? SMU? Virginia?) Michigan could sneak as high as the 5 seed line. Personally, I think the 6 seed line gives Michigan the best chance to make it to the sweet 16 and the second weekend. I am extremely doubtful of making it past the elite 8 unless we get the perfect matchup, stay out of foul trouble, and shoot the lights out.
