5th Top 100 CBB prospect chooses G-League over NCAA
5-star guard Jonathan Kuminga will bypass college and play in the G-League instead, passing over offers from Texas Tech, Auburn, Duke, and Kentucky, among others. Also noteworthy that he just reclassified to the 2020 class (instead of 2021,) and his brother, Joel Ntambwe, currently plays for Texas Tech.
Proving what a waste of time it is for all involved to go to school for a year only. This was inevitable.
Opens up a scholarship somewhere for a kid who might want to actually go school by playing basketball... instead of going to school to play basketball.
Yes, that would have been me in college. Unfortunately I am 5’9” with mediocre athleticism so nobody would pay to see me play.
Extra! EXTRA!! Read all about it!!! 'Local boy takes highest pay to work in Swanky Town'
-- A local school boy turned down offers from four different homeowners in the 'Burbs neighborhood to manage lawn care activities. 'Burb's is a working class neighborhood, filled with good, earnest people making a decent living. The boy opted against a lifetime of solid opportunity to work in Swanky Town, where the yards are larger and more complex to maintain. The higher pay is thought to attract children looking to gain a competitive edge in the professional world of lawn maintenance, a cut throat world of aggressive contract pursuits that enable the purchase of more highly customized equipment and greater personal acclaim. The drawback to Swanky Town is that another boy can come around and undercut your fledgling business, as the homeowners are known to be fickle, inconsiderate, and notoriously cheap - always looking to save that last buck.
What's the relevance of reclassifying to 2020 if he's not going to play in college?
He'd still be one year closer to the NBA. instead of high school in 20-21, college / G league in 21-22, NBA in 22-23, he accelerates that process by one year.
got it, thanks
Kuminga was a Michigan target and #1 player in the 2021 class. He's not just a "top 100 CBB prospect" lol
Also this bumps Chet Holmgren up to the #1 player overall on 247 and #2 on the composite.
I thought the same thing.

If he's not going to Michigan he is!
I think this will be a good thing of the G league wants to keep paying these guys. Top guys can go to the G league for a year before going to the league. Most will still go the college route and college will remain as popular as ever. It just keeps the pseudo-G league teams who are buying a nice roster from continuing to do so
If these G-League guys get drafted at the top of the lottery next summer, I'd be shocked if Emoni doesn't reclassify to 2021 and play in the G-League. That's a lot of money to pass up if you're almost guaranteed to be the top pick in the draft.
So tell me again why the NBA doesn't just allow high school kids to go straight to the draft anymore?
It gives them an extra year plus higher level of competition to evaluate.
Martell Webster, Jonathan Bender, Kwame Brown, Korleone Young, Ndudi Ebi.
Drafting on potential is hard (Darko Milicic?). The league was getting a lot of draft busts and player that needed development or were injury prone were taking up roster spots. I think the players association agreed because it kept never gonna bes from taking the spots of veterans.
A robust (ala MLB or NHL) minor league system would solve this problem and even as a college basketball fan, I hope that is what the G-League can become.
Is this a serious question?
Straight outta HS busts cost big $!
Hell, now they watch em play a year in college and still take Anthony Bennetts!
This will work for the 5-star elite players. Let them do G-league and make their $$. One and done is a joke in college.
Especially this year, the G-League makes perfect sense here. There's no guarantee the NCAA will play any basketball this year, which makes the only real argument for playing in college as a one-and-done (national TV exposure) really unpersuasive, especially because the G League will get covered more than usual if they play at all.
