WTKA Roundtable 9/8/2022: Yes Cliff I'm Happy Comment Count

Seth September 8th, 2022 at 11:00 AM

Things discussed:

  • Offense: vanilla, and not crisp. There were mistakes on the OL that only come out on tape. Seth keeps trying to change the topic to defense because the O was profoundly uninteresting except for…
  • QB talk: Cade wasn't sharp, we don't get all-22 so we don't know how much he was missing, but his pre-snap reads weren't even Cade-level. Suspect it was the situation getting to him? Even things that went well for Cade help make the JJ case.
  • Press conference talk is press conference talk—media is making a thing because of the QB competition but what do you want your QB to sound like?
  • Defense: How much can you tell from events vs that right tackle? Harrell had a good game, impressed with two new DEs, Amoeba stuff that was perfect for this kind of team.
  • Hawaii: bad. Set a new record (over Rutgers 2016) for cyans on the chart.
  • Around the league: Iowa's offense is a new level of horrible and they can't fire the coach's son at OC. MSU found a linebacker in the transfer portal but speed in the secondary remains an issue for them. CJ Stroud didn't feel comfortable without his JSN blanket but we think he'll do just fine with Ebukwa and Harrison Jr.

I remember when Russ Bellomy came in for Denard Robinson and I thought the starter was better.

Wilson was only going to be open in the corner because the cornerback read where Cade was throwing the ball and came off of Wilson.

Cade's initial reads were to the left - Bell in the corner (covered by the corner who had the deep 1/4 fade) and All's crossing pattern. The LB vacated to cover the flat in case Bell pulled up, so All would be open. All stumbled and therefore was not in position to catch the ball.

As I pointed out on the podcast comments, Wilson was only going to be open in the corner because the cornerback read where Cade was throwing the ball and came off of Wilson.

McCarthy may be better or he may not be. We'll find out if he's the starter in Columbus and maybe before. A few plays against an already beat up and depleted CSU defense (lost 3 players before his first run) do not make a savior.
