What is the "U" you reference?  Are you referring to Michigan?  Or Arkansas?  I'm confused.  And do you claim to have first-hand knowledge of Mallett's alleged douchebaggery?  I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with your statement, I'm just curious as to your credentials.

I meant UM, should have clarified my slang. And yes, I have first-hand knowledge of his character - met him for the first time right after he had enrolled early and continued to run in the same loose circles until he left Ann Arbor.

On top of my own experiences, I think it's general knowledge that he wasn't very respected as a leader on the team. I don't think his teammates trusted him or appreciated his arrogance.

I remember hearing from multiple people while I was still on campus that he was once at Skeeps spitting on people from the upper part of the bar because, "Hey, I'm Ryan Mallett."

If the Lions could get him in Round 3, I think he would be a pretty solid backup.........especially because the Lions have used their backups so extensively.

If Henne went in the second round it's hard to see Mallet falling to the third rough, though that would be nice.  There are a lot of teams with crummy QB situations that would probably nab him in the second round as a possible value pick.

I admittedly haven't been paying much attention lately, but last I checked Stanton's contract has expired, and Hill has one more year left. Because Stafford is fairly injury prone, I'd have to believe they will be drafting a developmental QB this year.

It might not happen until Rounds 6-7 though, where Mallett won't be available.

How many people I've spoken too that have also said Mallett is a huge douchebag. Hes one of those guys that the word douchebag was created for. I have no firsthand knowledge, just saying that this is a widely spread sentiment.

I hope the Redskins draft him

no scratch that

I hope the Redskins trade every good player they have plus their next ten first round picks to move up so they can draft him

In all the scouting reports I've read his plusses are always physical (big arm, "drives" the ball, leads the receiver, etc.).  The minuses are usually something along the lines of "doesn't always read coverage correctly" or "gets easily overloaded by information."

Good and bad, eh?  There should be lots of hope because only a handful of people can throw like him.  Lots of QBs take time to mature and learn.  Mallet could be one of these.  He might be the type whose best years are in the 30+ age range.  It seems unlikely that he'll produce immediately along the lines of Ryan / Bradford.

He could also wind up being Ryan Leaf, another physically gifted (and very successful) collegian who performed poorly at "the next level."  (I don't have the sense that he's quite in the Leaf zone.)

I just wonder why Rodriguez hasn't been blamed yet for any of his failings.  After all, he did run him out of town.  /s

The thing is that physical talents are a threshold that need to be crossed to succeed in the NFL.  Once you hit the min talent level, other things start to become much more important, especially for quarterbacks, than physical talent.  Draft history is riddled with big-armed draft busts with jelly for brains.  Mallett seems like he might fall into that category.

I always hoped that the Panthers would take Mallett with the #1 pick (after Luck pledged to stay in school) just so I wouldn't have to watch that d-bag Claussen next year.  The Panthers always find a way to waste draft picks every year so why not take Mallett with the first pick (aside from the obvious of him not being first pick-worthy)?

A friend of mine who is an independent scout said that he wouldn't touch Mallett with a 10 foot pole.  He said that he has a long laundry list of off-field problems that no one really knows on the surface.  He also said that his mechanics, footwork and work ethics(lack thereof) are another reason why he's not considered to be a 1st rounder.  FWIW, he has Mallett as a 3rd/4th rounder which includes his character concerns.  There will be teams who will take him earlier than that because of his potential.

With strong armed college quarterbacks. If you watch mallet on tape you start to notice that he makes alot of throws off his back foot, which you can get away with in college because the windows to make most throws are bigger. In the NFL you throw off your back foot it's underthrown or an interception.

"Per NBC and Mel Kiper......."   Just a quick sidenote, Mel had his name legally changed to "Mel Kiper Draft Guru" so I guess we're somewhat obligated to refer to him as such in these threads.....he wanted to go with "Tool" but it was, unfortunately for him, already taken by a fairly decent band.
