Right, so they were essentially professionals. That was my point. Guys like Toni Kukoc were being paid in Europe to play for their club teams as well as their national teams before the 1992 Olympics.
Before the Dream Team, the US was the only country who didn't use professionals in the Olympics, which was understood as a bit of a disadvantage. Today it would be an insurmountable disadvantage with the way basketball has exploded globally. Our amateurs would not stand a chance.
Blake Griffin is a highlight machine, but Kevin Love is your starter (if not Chandler for the sake of size in the paint). Love does everything well. He can score inside and out, rebound, defend, pass, and, unlike Griffin, make free throws. Blake Griffin can't do a handful of those things at even close to an Olympic level.
If he wins one, he wins one. But the King James nickname is the most absurd thing in sports. Try catching up with MJ, Kobe, Bill Russell, Bird, and Magic then we can talk about a coronation.
I was fortunate enough to hear Bob Chappuis speak in Prof. John Bacon's "History of College Athletics" class my sophomore year (2008) and retell all of these stories being recounted again here today. Truly incredible to accomplish so much for his country and his university. RIP.
Seems to be a relatively reputable source on these topics, especially in SoCal. CBS and SI writers are retweeting the reports which means they believe in their validity.
Sad day for the NFL, for the Chargers organization, and for San Diego's community. Junior was born and raised in the area.
A bong would be similar in its health effects as smoking a joint, FYI. Both involve the combustion of the marijuana plant which is the process that introduces carcinogens. As opposed to the vaporizer, which extracts the THC from the plant by superheating the plant itself, rather than burning it.
It's possible he won't have to sit out if the NCAA grants him a waiver, which he's applied for since CMU fired his dad. I'm not sure what the decision process is on the NCAA side but it seems like a circumstance that may allow him to play immediately.
ESPN would never be the first to bash Urban, OSU or Florida. But the Twitter world started calling them out for it after Forde published this and looks like they went to Schlabach and told him to rewrite the same article.
I studied abroad in Barcelona while I was a student at UM. There definitely isn't a "Michigan" bar like you'll find in NYC or Chicago over there but there are some places where you can find American sports. I think your friends' best bet is calling the George and Dragon Pub and asking if they can play the game. It's a longshot but they played NFL games there on Sundays and say they'll try and cater to any request.
Josh Selby in that group, as well? He's had to sit out the past few games with a hurt foot. But he's also averaging 12 PPG and leading the #2 team in the nation in assists. Pretty solid campaign.
I meant UM, should have clarified my slang. And yes, I have first-hand knowledge of his character - met him for the first time right after he had enrolled early and continued to run in the same loose circles until he left Ann Arbor.
On top of my own experiences, I think it's general knowledge that he wasn't very respected as a leader on the team. I don't think his teammates trusted him or appreciated his arrogance.
It seems a stretch, but then again the RR hire was a whirlwind that came pretty much out of left-field, as well.
If it did happen, I don't understand how any UM fan could disapprove. The guy thrives on energy - running hard, hitting hard, making the perfect read. Kids who play football want to play for that type of coach. He's a true student of the game and obviously knows his stuff. Just watch his 1-on-1's with the NFL QBs for MNF. You can even see it on those pros' faces, they'd love to work with this guy.
I'm not arguing that Les Miles can boast a spotless record, but give the guy a chance. He inherited a program from Saban that was already being run on these expectations. It's ultimately about winning, the NCAA is full of shit when they say it's about the student athlete. Their academic records aren't generating any revenue. He's just a product of the system. If he comes to UM, and obviously thats a big if, he at least deserves a chance to prove he can be morally upstanding while winning games. But 0-12 is something you should never wish upon Mich
Was preseason ranked 10 last year (I guess we were 15 so that's no guarantee of success) with a first-round talent in Gordon Hayward plus two other talented players in Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack (both Hayward and Mack played for Team USA in the Under-19 World Championships); this definitely was no average team. They never fell out of the Top 25 all year.
There are similarities between the styles of play that both coaches preach and you can never say never, but I would argue that Butler didn't get to the Final Four because they were just a "hot" team. The Butler team last year rebounded better than a typical Beilein team (coming out of a zone to rebound is tough). They also play a high pressure man defense as opposed to a Beilein 1-3-1 zone. And they shot one more three pointer than we did (761 vs. 760) but at a 34% clip compared to our 29%. Not saying those things (with exception made for the 3 point accuracy) guarantee or even influence the rate of success but they do say something about the differences in style.
That is code for we don't have one (a special teams coach) (due to coaching limitations, of course).
And obviously the real issue isn't the coaching. How hard is it to kick a football down the middle of the field? I could go out there and make sure the ball stayed in bounds (thank you, 4 years of HS soccer). I think it's focus, these kids need to get some pressure taken off them and just relax... I'm sure they can hear the collective breath hold on the Michigan fanbase as they take the field. Looks like Hagerup might be getting used to it though.
Isn't it a sad commentary on the state of our kicking game that we here from a blog written by a Michigan basketball player that his roommate who has spent tireless hours working on his basketball game says he is also talented enough to be the best kicker for the Michigan football team?
Why do I keep replaying the scene from Little Giants between Rick Moranis and the cowboy kid, "Do you like football" "Nope" "Great you're on our team!"
The blind leading the blind - it's a typical case of mob mentality/whatever you want to call it. The guy at the top says something and all the people at the bottom look in awe, but don't ask questions. Unfortunately, turning on the TV you probably won't find much more valuable opinions as the MSM loves to talk about job-security.
he was referring to Devil's Advocate starring Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino.
The Devil's Advocate received generally favorable reviews but holds a 65% rating in Rotten Tomatoes[3]. Critic James Berardinelli wrote that the film "is a highly-enjoyable motion picture that's part character study, part supernatural thriller, and part morality play"[4] while Roger Ebert wrote "The movie never fully engaged me; my mind raced ahead of the plot, and the John Grisham stuff clashed with the Exorcist stuff." - wikpedia

Damn Commies.
Gerry McNamara (maybe Hakim Warrick to a lesser extent) made him great his one year in college. That guy can play for me anyday. True leader.
Before the Dream Team,
Why?
Before the Dream Team, the US was the only country who didn't use professionals in the Olympics, which was understood as a bit of a disadvantage. Today it would be an insurmountable disadvantage with the way basketball has exploded globally. Our amateurs would not stand a chance.
Can't be interested if they aren't playing.

Only silver lining I see in this whole Heat/Big 3 debacle would be Juwan getting a ring. There was a good Deadspin article today on the topic:

going to try the sopcast
Nothing wrong, even as a Michigan alum and fan, that admitting OSU has been remarkably consistent and resilient given their infractions.
That should only give you more pleasure in beating them.

Mel Kiper had an ESPN conference call today in which he stated that Taylor Lewan could "maybe" be the next Jake Long. High praise.

A turd in the punchbowl
Just needs to extend his range and he becomes that kind of player. Same knocks on K. Love coming out of college.
This is almost suredly ESPN's reply to the article that Pat Forde (formerly of ESPN) wrote for Yahoo almost 24 hours before.

This is a good shirt. Basic, timeless, etc. just gets the point of UM football across without going "All In".
On Twitter last night. Chris Fowler asked for the Twitterverse's opinion on the song and hinted they'd consider a change.
Apologies for not posting earlier, also....
Games not even close to over. Relax.

Good Frontline special on the Mormon faith, both it's beginnings and present day.
