I've been trying to spread it all day. It's out of the box. Hoke gets a chance to prove that he can put together a defense that can win in the big ten, and if he succeeds he becomes HC when Lesticles goes grass-chewing into the sunset. If he fails, we hire Harbaugh after he washes out of the NFL.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:47 PM ^
That would be some staff...
January 8th, 2011 at 9:29 PM ^
Whoa, I think I just shadt a little bit in my pants!
January 8th, 2011 at 9:34 PM ^
Wait a sec, is that a turd on the grass? Did somebody Shadt on the grass? LM will not be happy about this.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:02 PM ^
actually a technique used by Cesar Milan. DB brought him in to help Les work on his grass addiction.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:31 PM ^
Hey just wondering since so many Mich fans hated Rodriguez and it seems like a lot of people seem to hate Miles....which coach would make Michigan fans stop whining?
January 8th, 2011 at 9:47 PM ^
Gruden, I guess. Although I think that if Miles or Hoke was hired it would satisfy the "michigan man" contingent of the fan base, and the rest of us who dont like them right now would probably be reasonable and shut up.

Lloyd Carr
January 8th, 2011 at 9:31 PM ^
but I expect to hear something from Les Miles tomorrow one way or the other. LSU is not going to let their recruiting class go to hell like ours.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
LSU owes him over $14 million if they fire him, so they are not going to do that. They need to wait for him to formally resign.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:33 PM ^
1. Why did you screw that kid over at LSU?
2. Is grass a normal part of your diet?
3. How will you improve your clock management skills?
4. Why did you diss Michigan the last time you were wanted here?
5. Looking at your recruiting class the vast majority of the kids are from La. How are you going to recruit nationally?
January 8th, 2011 at 9:37 PM ^
He'll never ask #4, because it was the other way around - he called us and we left him hanging.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
was never contacted last time.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
January 8th, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
1) He didn't work hard enough. T'hat's my story, sticking too it. I have a damn strong team.
2) Field turf will do fine
3) What your deal (Oh wait, wrong Michigan grad)
4) Martin never called. I think Lloyd doesn't like me.
5) Hmm ... recruit Louisiana easily or recruit the nation and lose Louisiana prospect ... I think you have my real answer for #4.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
at least he knows how to recruit in-state, we won't have to deal with MSU taking half of the top 10 or the media saying we don't own in-state recruiting anymore
January 8th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
when everybody else does it in the sec why would you not.2,no,3,by watching the clock.4,I don't think he even got offered the job.5,when you have the talent that they have in that state why not lock them up,also if you look at their roster you will see they recuirt nationally!!!
January 8th, 2011 at 10:54 PM ^
Because it's wrong?
January 8th, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
Les Miles answers:
#5 See 2007
January 8th, 2011 at 9:58 PM ^
See Bo Pelini
January 8th, 2011 at 10:03 PM ^
Given that LSU just went 11-2 this season without Pellini around, I don't think he's a crutch for Miles.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
Let's see:
*The last college coaching experience he had was as quarterbacks coach for University of the pacific in 1989 and wide receivers coach at Pitt in 1991
*Runs the west coast offense (pro-style, outdated even in the stodgy pros)
*Defensive success at Tampa Bay attributable to Tony Dungy's personnel and cover 2 scheme
Why is this name even coming up?
January 8th, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
Superbowl winning coach? jh went pro?
January 8th, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
It's the football coaching-search equivalent of Godwin's Law: As a football head coaching search at a major school goes on, the likelihood that John Gruden's name will come up approaches 1.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
Pete Carroll's last college experience: 1983 at NC State as DC. Made the Raiders one of the best teams in pro football before leaving for Tampa. Student of the game who has shown a keen interest in contemporary college offenses.
It is a home run hire.
January 9th, 2011 at 12:44 AM ^
I seem to remember a rescinded national championship, 15 vacated victories over two years and multiyear sanctions imposed on USC just as Carroll conveniently left for the NFL.
I'm not saying being an NFL guy made Carroll do any of this stuff, or that Gruden would walk that same path, but if the evidence for Gruden's supposed fitness for the Michigan job is the bang-up job Carroll did at USC then I'd say people need to revisit recent history. The point is that the best possible example of the NFL refugee coming to a major college program is tainted by some of the most severe sanctions the NCAA has doled out in recent memory.
FTR, I'm more inclined to think a Gruden hire would end up like the Wannstadt hire did for Pitt--mediocrity and disappointment, or the Callahan hire did for Nebraska--chaos and severe disappointment.
January 9th, 2011 at 1:12 AM ^
But he's the hot name (for any coaching position that opens pro or college), so he must be amazing...just like Charlie Weis was at ND!!!
January 9th, 2011 at 3:42 AM ^
And wants to get back into coaching. Can't blame him for that, but he's still an awful fit for us. And it's not just because he's an NFL guy with no meaningful experience at the college level. It's also because he represents a return to the pro-style offense, which I was fine with 3 years ago when we had the personnel for it, but we don't anymore. Plus we have the Big 10's most dynamic, though still somewhat raw, offensive player. Does anyone really want to see him go? Because he doesn't fit into the west coast offense Gruden uses.
...oh, and I wonder why we both got neg'd there? I hope it's not because someone doesn't want to engage in a meaningful debate over the merits of their favored coaching candidate. When a coach--any coach--has been chosen, then it's time for unity. I'll even get behind Gruden and wish him the best in the slim chance he's hired. But in the meantime, when he hasn't been, it's time for debate over whether he should be considered a serious candidate. I don't see much reason he should be.

January 8th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
At least if Miles became the Michigan coach, we could taunt opposing teams with "YOUR ASS IS GRASS!"
January 8th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
So, the message we want to send is...
"Our coach will eat your ass"
?
Just curious.
January 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM ^
You got something against ass-eating MICHIGAN MEN?
January 8th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
I know this is probably in other threads. But this is a must watch of an interview with Les last night.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:51 PM ^
That right there tells you the back channel was already happening - agree the interview is probably for closing the deal.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:58 PM ^
Wow, that's telling. LM is a Michigan Man at heart.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:10 PM ^
That is the first time I've watched it and it sure did look like he was uncomfortable.
Any player of his watching that could not be sold on whatever he said to them after that.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:37 PM ^
When Les is hired will we still get a Peanut Butter Jellly time from Brian or will he be too bummed out?
January 8th, 2011 at 9:37 PM ^
and a decision, if it turns out he coaches here, we'll all regret in the near future.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:38 PM ^
I don't really like Miles because of the oversigning and stuff. If he didn't do that than sure I would love to have him, with a different OC of course.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:50 PM ^
i said when everybody in the sec does it why would you not do it.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:58 PM ^
Because it's wrong.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
At this point I'm kinda like the guy sitting at the bar, couple more beers that 2 is starting to look like a 10 to me.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
January 8th, 2011 at 10:38 PM ^
And I need to start working again. Seriously, I check this blog and twitter 50 times a day.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
is it hasn't happened already. What is Brandon doing? He should be interviewing about 3 guys a day.
If he hasn't talked to Miles yet that means he isn't close to a decision. Which is really bad news for our recruiting class.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
The "interview" is actually the last step of the the process, it means the backchannel talks have gotten somewhere.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:40 PM ^
Its really becoming a joke. No one is going to be happy with anyone that DB hires. So just accept his decision and move on.
