Just a general Twitter question. How do people find these tweets that people provide. Like this one for example, who is Patrick Kinahan and how did you find this obscure tweet by him regarding BYU/UM?
September 29th, 2010 at 8:22 PM ^
Patrick Kinahan “PK”, is recognized as one of the top sports personalities in Utah. As the beat writer for BYU sports and Utah sports over the last 15 years, no one has developed better insights into the major rivalries in Utah.

He lives somewhere near Salt Lake City, listens to Mr. Kinahan, and subscribed to his tweets. The awesome thing about the Michigan fanbase is it's wide reaching nature. There's no sportscaster from Seattle, Miami, Dallas, or Bismarck that can say something Michigan related without it finding it's way here.

With BYU going independent, I could see them taking on a Notre Dame-esque level in the media. ESPN has exclusive rights to BYU home games from 2011 to 2018, so they could also be driving this deal. BYU needs to fill out their schedule with a bunch of teams now that they have no conference.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:33 PM ^
Although in the last decade, BYU almost certainly has been a better program than ND, BYU will never achieve a Notre Dame-esque level in the media because BYU doesn't have the same tradition and the same national following that Notre Dame has. The fact that ESPN has exclusive rights to their home games will increase their national profile to a greater extent than remaining in the Mountain West, but ESPN is not going to showcase BYU like NBC does for ND. If ESPN has the option of showing BYU or an ACC/SEC/Big 10/Big 12 matchup, the conference matchup is almost certain to draw more viewers and will win out much more often than not, leaving BYU to be shown on ESPNU or ESPN3 or one of the other lesser ESPN networks.
I also agree that this type of matchup is not the best scheduling idea. Unlike if when we play a team like Alabama, the upside of beating BYU is very small compared to the downside from a loss.

I believe BYU is staking their claim to ratings numbers on the growing number of mormons
Just as ND had a feeder system from every catholic school in the country in the good days, I believe that BYU and ESPN believe Mormons will tune in
Also, isn't there a rumor ND drops off of our schedule? Could this be the filler game?

I did hear on sports radio this afternoon (97.1), that the host had heard froma good source michigan was looking to bring in a big name for the open home game in 2012. Talk about a tough schedule....Bama, @ Neb @ ND @OSU and another tough team at home. Crazyness.

Not any if the Stooges. So there may be some validity to it.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:24 PM ^
I think teams like BYU, TCU, and Boise St. are starting to reach the level of BCS conference teams where we do gain the same amount of street cred for beating them as they would for beating us.
Plus, Provo is a great venue for a game and a tough place to play in.
I like that Brandon is branching out past Notre Dame and the MAC. I know we're a national brand, but we do need help out that way and the exposure will help a lot.

BYU isn't the best choice for a home-and-home, but its better than the alternative: more games against eastern baby seal u.
I would like to see us schedule a serious ACC or Big 12 team, like A+M or VT. Someone who I can see us beating twice but carries serious name recognition.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:30 PM ^
Since when are they a serious BIG 12 team? If it was going to be a BIG12 team I'd prefer TT over A&M.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:38 PM ^
It's about name recognition: everyone knows A&M, as opposed to tech.
Name recognition + coaches poll = success.

Playing in Texas will help recruiting a heck of a lot more than playing in Provo.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:31 PM ^
You can't make the schedule too difficult. You need a "breather" or two in the schedule. Playing BGSU gave us the chance to work a lot of young guys in. If we're playing Bama, ND and VT, we can't do that.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:39 PM ^
but you don't need 3 of them. I understand that it becomes a really tough schedule with the one-off bama game, but its better than not having a tough road game later as opposed to another cupcake.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:26 PM ^
I'm leery of playing them for two reasons:
1. The high altitude in Provo. (Can't prepare for that in Michigan.)
2. They've got a bunch of guys who are 24 or 25, thanks to their Mormon missions.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:29 PM ^
Might as well play Boise State if were gonna play a mid-major. Although Id rather a home and home with a team like Oregon St. because there from a BCS conference and are good but we should beat them both times.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:31 PM ^
Not a fan personally but it's a step up from FCS schools like UMASS...

I've had my fill of Oregon. I'd play just about any other Pac-10 team first. Actually, I'd love a crack at Kiffin and SC.

The BYU Hawaii campus? I wouldn't mind sun, surf and palms, especially over dry cities, dry land and potatoes (ok, potatoes are fine, but that's it!).
September 29th, 2010 at 9:13 PM ^
Unless im thinking of the wrong university, but BYU is a pass heavy team, correct? That's not good for us. Maybe by the time we play them, if it happens, we'll be better at pass D but until then I would stay away from any pass happy team. That's like LC era scheduling vs Oregon and app state when we couldn't stop any mobile QB at that time. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't like it.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:13 PM ^
as this upstanding Mormon tweeted the news earlier today. Surprisingly no word yet on whether Tate has requested a transfer this week.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:24 PM ^
Not a fan of a home and home with them. If it's true, then there aren't going to be nine conference games.

of the 'interesting' 2012 scheduling... mf

In with BYU and out with ND for these 2 years? I can see this, otherwise it is just too much religiousity for my blood. If Kelly revs it up, this could be a nice trade off and this seems likely given Kelly appears to be getting pretty good recruits.
September 29th, 2010 at 11:29 PM ^
I like that we're taking a stronger approach to OOC scheduling. After years of MAC teams, it's nice to see teams like Oregon, Utah, UConn, and BYU come to the Big House. Besides, if we have 2 BCS teams (or BCS busters) on our schedule, it only makes us look better.
September 29th, 2010 at 11:32 PM ^
Between 2000 and 2004 we lost to UCLA, WASH STATE, and OREGON
Lets wait till New Years Day to play on west coast!
September 29th, 2010 at 11:44 PM ^
I'm not too excited for this either. I'm a student at BYU, so I don't want to have to chose between the school I attend, BYU, and the team I've loved my entire life, Michigan
September 29th, 2010 at 11:48 PM ^
I live out west now so I'd have to make the road trip to see us against the Stormin' Mormons if it works out.
September 30th, 2010 at 3:05 AM ^
No thanks to this as well. Really absolutely nothing for us to gain and uh, trip to Provo? No thanks. Do you get to tailgate before games? When I was in Salt Lake City, you couldn't find a stimulant or depressant to save your life. Well, maybe to save your life, I guess I didn't look at a hospital.

Well I know one guy that would be really happy if this game ended up happening:
