Anyone else notice that Gibbons was Benched?

It wouldn't hurt Hagerup to make more solid contact on punts, either.
Fortunately ND's punter was pretty bad this week, too. Sloppy kicking by both teams, IMO.

sure did - they said it on TV as well - announcers noted the "backup" kicker was in for that extra point - nice to see them say at least one intelligent thing

You must have used DVR to hear that, because you were obviously still screaming for joy and punching the air in celebration from the TD when the kick was made, right? Right!?

You betcha - didn't catch it the first time around but did on viewings 2-38...and counting

The special teams unit will get much better as the year progresses. Whoever wins the kicking battle has to have confidence to make the big kicks. It didn't appear like Gibbons had a lot of confidence on either attempt so he just needs to practice a little more and hopefully he can knock a few through against UMass and BG to give him some much needed confidence going forward, we're going to need him at somepoint this season.

tomorrow yield some kicker prospects.

Would they be eligible to play this season? Not that it really matters, and I have faith in Gibbons. He's just a freshman.

Raid the soccer team baby.
Or if we're going to recruit kickers we should send a coach to Europe for a few weeks. Mesko hails from a European football background (although he did end up in Ohio) and Sebastian Janikowski started out as a Polish soccer player.

In fact, Justin Meram is on the U of M soccer team.

Broekhuizen played soccer and was the kicked for the football team.

Ohio is very similar to eastern Europe.

i had to go over a wall, past some guard dogs, through the mine field to escape to Meechigan.
God, i still hate that state.

I've watched Hagerup in practice and he will be just fine given some time. He really is a very solid punter and although his performance this past weekend wasn't very good, it didn't hurt us.
Gibbons missed FG's hurt us and allowed huge swings in momentum. A missed FG is probably only second to a goal line stand in getting people fired-up. Broekhuizen is really quite good, I don' know why he isn't getting more PT.

but Broekhuizen's PAT looked like it was struck a lot harder, higher and straighter than any of the kicks I've seen from Gibbons.

i would go with the walk on next week for sure; just like "Old Sausage" beat out the highly rated scholarship kicker the past two years.

kickers...we need to be patient. Trust me...I'm a doctor and have followed M football for 42 years.

Can you prescribe me some xanax to take before we attempt FGs?
It's going to be an adventure out there for the rest of this season.

Rich Rod for benching him? He wasn't even close on those.
September 12th, 2010 at 7:37 PM ^
We used a scholarship on BG. The kid needs to work out some nerves and start kicking like a D1 kicker. My brother played on a D3 team back in the early 90's and their kicker was reliable from anywhere inside 45 yards. Even nailed a few FGs of 50+. This is D1 football. I'm thinking RR needs to have a "come to God" meeting with our scholarship kicker so we can get past this.
September 12th, 2010 at 7:50 PM ^
If I remember correctly, Denard had a nice punt inside the ten. Maybe he can kick FGs too! All the Michigan critics are saying they're a one man team anyway. Let 'em think that even more. What are they gonna do? Sell out to try to block it? No, it might be a fake.
September 12th, 2010 at 8:15 PM ^
RR did not even invite the walk on who was 8 for 8 in fgs in the spring game with a 50 yarder to summer camp. what kind of thought process is that? I guess he wants to lose a few games going with his pick gibbons. this makes no sense. guess that good is good enough!
September 12th, 2010 at 8:48 PM ^
I think RR should revoke his scholarship at the end of the year and recruits a new kicker. It seems his issue is mental from what RR says. If thats the case, its a bad sign that he misses so many kicks considering hes a sophomore. Maybe RR can get him to transfer with Vlad...like a package deal or something. I can't remember a worse kicker UM kicker on scholarship.
