2011 CB Commit Greg Brown to Enroll Early
I didn't know if this was already known to the fanbase prior to today, but Rivals ran an article today reporting that 2011 cornerback commit Greg Brown plans to be an early enrollee ($).
One can't ever guarantee such things (remember when we thought Devin Gardner wouldn't make it in in time?), but I love the ambition...and I'm pretty sure it makes scholarship assignation more flexible, too.
They also mention he'll get a look at safety as a senior.
Tommy likey, Tommy want wingy.
Can't be a more important position where we need someone to get established at early.
Respectfully disagree. I think its LB by the time he hits campus. We have lots of DB depth (albeit inexperienced) but our LB are going to be almost barren by the time he would arrive in Ann Arbor.
According to the article:
The 5-10, 180-pound prospect
He seems quite smallish for LB. I agree in that we will be pretty thin there, but that's no reason to move people out of position. It reminds of that one time UM used their towel boy as a WR...
I was responding to "Can't be a more important position where we need someone to get established at early."
I did not say that I wanted Greg Brown to play LB. Just pointing out that CB isnt the position of dire need for our 2011 commits.
Thanks, I understand where you were going now. As we are painfully aware of now, you can never have enough DB's. Especially considering the attrition lately and the 3-3-5 sets we'll be running.
Yes, linebacker is another spot, not denying that. But I think that it's comparing apples to apples as far as help at both spots -- if Brown was a linebacker, I'd be saying the same thing.
Yeah like I said "respectfully disagree" because I think its a fair assumption that we can never have enough CBs. I just think we have a lot of nice promising young talent at CB/Safety coming in already (or already here but emerging in the spring) and by the time 2011 hits I hope we have a nice core set of guys back there. Linebacker, I'm really not sure who we put back there outside of Craig Roh in 2011. Someone wiser than me (GERG, RR) will have to make that call.
Kenny Demens, JB Fitzgerald or Isaiah Bell would be good choices. Mike Jones and Jake Ryan will push hard as well, and I bet either Josh Furman or Marvin Robinson ends up at WLB (most likely Furman) and whoever it is will be good.
Don't get me wrong, I want solid LB's in this class, but we'll have good options to pick from a year from now.
From what I heard, he may need to move to Quick and possibly DE position since he's pushing close to 250-260 lbs.
wait, really? Is it good weight?
Wait, is this for real? First of all, he's only 6'1", and second of all he was 237 on the spring roster. That would be crazy weight gain, even if it was bad weight (which I can't believe unless he completely ditched out on summer Barwisizing). Where did you hear that?
from a couple of players whom I have gotten to know while I'm at Michigan. They said that Bell was bulking up like crazy and has gotten bigger and bigger. He's closer to 6'3" than 6'1".
Damn. I have to say, I've heard of safeties brought in to play LB, but I've never heard of a high school safety who plays DE in a 3-4, that would be wild. Hopefully he doesn't bulk up too much, keeps his athleticism and is a badass MLB at about 250. That would be ideal, I think.
I've heard one player who was drafted in the NFL(his name slipped in my mind) who was once a high school safety and bulked up to play DE. Bell would not be the only one who has made a transition from safety to DE. He would be a pass rushing terror if he doesn't lose much of his athleticism.
Btw, Michigan actually doesn't play 3-4 scheme. They play a multiple scheme which can play at either 4-3 over or strong 3-3-5 scheme which gives GERG flexiblity to call plays without having to subsitute for players.
I actually don't know who you're talking about, but I'm sure it's happened before. Anyway, that would be crazy. Not only that, but we have a lot of DE talent on the team, and not nearly as many true linebackers, so I would like him to stay there. LaLota, Wilkins, and Black can hold down the DE for the next few years, not to mention Chris Rock and anyone else this class picks up.

is going to be a good one. He has been doing very well in workouts and apparently, coaches expect him to be a contributor if he's ready for this coming season.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but this is the first I've heard of that. I doubt he'll move to Quick or DE, but it's always possible. I think he'll just stick at MLB.
Hopefully Demens, Furman, Bell, Hawthorne, Ryan, Roh, Fitzergald, Rogers (if he stays at LB, he may move to DE) can be a solid core with Robinson being capable of being either a safety or linebacker -- presumably safety right now.
I agree.
Although I think Davion Rogers will be Roh's back-up starting 2011, and will take over for him when he leaves. And I think he'll be good.
I think you are correct about Rogers' position. It will be interesting to see where other players end up. IIRC, Jake Ryan said he might be brought it to play Roh's position. Also it will be interesting to see where Paskorz and Wilkins ends up.
It will be interesting. There will be a logjam at one of those positions, no doubt. If I were to guess, I would guess that Wilkins is a DE and Jake Ryan is a MLB. Paskorz is the most uncertain, but from what I've read his frame should put on weight well and he'll have his hand down soon. Since Paskorz will almost certainly redshirt, he should be over 250 before he sees the field.
Hawthorne has been a safety so far.
Cool. Anyone we can get to enroll early on defense is a bonus.
commits early...enrolls early
Hopefully he doesn't leave early.
But if he does, and he gets drafted early, I'll be very happy..
And with the #1 pick in the 2013 draft, the Detroit Lions select:
Greg Brown, CB, Michigan
New Lions coach Lane Kiffin says that Brown will be the cornerstone to his building of many successful Lions teams for years and years to come
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!
I will be wearing a paper bag over my head again to Ford Field if the Lions hire Lane Kiffin has head coach...
Leave it to the Lions to draft a player who isn't eligible.
How early? We need all the depth we can get come September 4th.
lmao...great one
With the freshmen we have this fall, and with Greg Brown enrolling early and Delonte Hollowell showing promise, we should be looking pretty good at CB by about fall or 2011 or 2012. And then we'll get back to reloading with major talent.
