Any news on Charles Matthew's decision to declare or return?

Submitted by njvictor on

Tomorrow is the deadline and I've heard rumblings that he's leaning towards declaring. I've never been one to criticize a player's decision to go pro, but I think Matthews going pro would be a mistake, and not just for my own selfish reasons

I like Matthews, but a 6'6" forward who cannot shoot from outside the FT line is going to have a very short pro career.  He would really benefit from coming back and working on his shot.

You’d think if one didn’t receive a draft invite, you’re not being heavily considered to get picked up yea? Definitely not a sure thing anyway. He could be the man for us next year if he comes back!

A lot of people making declarative statements about this decision with maybe like 5% of the info. Par for the course on the internet but we have literally no idea what is going into this decision, what he is hearing from teams, what he is hearing from coach, what else is going on in his life, etc. Stop pretending like you know what would be best for him.

Let's assume Matthews does not get drafted.  Then he can still play in the development league stateside, or professionally overseas and work on his game [including his jumper] 24/7, because he does not have any more academic responsibilities.  And, he gets paid, not a king's ransom, but he does get paid.  A young talent can make a nice living in Europe, and even G-league money now might be needed more than possible [not guaranteed] money later

He’s a good kid with great athleticism. I’ll miss him as a player, and I think he would be showcased on this years team, but if thinks it’s time to go, you have to respect his decision. As others have said, there are multiple factors like outside family pressure, not enjoying the college experience, or just simply being ready to get out in the work force that may override player development in a particular players mind.
