OT: Herm Edwards questionable strategy at ASU

Submitted by umjgheitma on

Looks like Herm hasn't heard the addage "Don't fire, Inspire." I'm not sure what the end goal here to kick guys off the team but keep them on scholarship. Do those players still count towards your 85 even though they're not on the team? Also a short sighted mindset to think that because only 45 players see the field that you don't need 85 on the team....maybe gaining experience/developing your body over time might also be valuable for the future for those not playing right away.

It would be comically enjoyable to watch how badly Herm Edwards has handled this job from Day One if it wasn't so obvious that a lot of young people are getting royally screwed along the way. This guy is awful.

has tried to put a professional model (as opposed to college) around Herm as much as any program has ever done. This seems to be a natural extension of that model.

That being said, colleges have been doing this for years. Just not so explicitly.

I might be the only one, but I like what he's saying.   He's not going to cut 30 players.   It's just a message to get on board or get out.   None of those guys are his players.   He's trying to get them to buy in now.   I see nothing wrong with this compared to all of the $EC medical scholarships or just outright telling players to leave.

Given a generous reading of his statements, I think he's implying that his players are faking injuries to get out of practice, and that he would rather have a smaller amount of devoted athletes than a bunch of lazy players.

Not that you should actually say that in public, that would be a PR disaster.

I will say a few things. I prefer to not reveal myself or my career but know the following. There is a huge bag of mixed feelings on the ASU campus in regards to Herm. One thing I've seen in person as spending many New Years at the UA All American Game is that kids LOVE him and LOVE how he talks. And I hate to say it but he's African American and the parents love that. I know this cause for the last 5 plus years I've listened to countless parents in Orlando rave about him and beg him to coach because they all say he related to there boys better then most coaches, there words not mine.

I have spent the last 3 plus years following ASU very closely as I have ties to the program w players and coaches, and will say this. Herm is ruffling lots of feathers over there in Tempe, but this is what the the AD wanted. The AD hated Graham and was very upset they beat Washington last year as he was planning on firing Graham that day. He wants ASU to have multiple high NFL draft picks and be a force on the map. I think the AD has replaced like 10-15 coaches in all sports since he was hired.

ASU wants a pro style team, pro style coaches, pro style facilities and pro style athletes. They have continued to hit Southern California hard this last year in recruiting and if all goes well should see some better results. The only problem is that the AD thinks ASU is a blue blood in football and should be at the top.

I will say this - and for anyone who has been to Tempe in the last say 1-2 years and have seen what is going on there will know that ASU is a sleeping giant.

The facilities are top notch, multiple pro coaches now, amazing weather, Talent rich Cali is a few hours away, girls are amazing. (Go look on you tube at ARIZONA STATE Halloween or ASU DIMES.

Herm has already renamed Camp T to Camp Kush after the old coach. They have literally 7 helmets and 7 uniforms that recruits love.

I think Herm w be a short timer from what I am being told. Napier was gonna be next in line once he learned but look for ASU to hire a big name after 3 plus years when everything has been redone in terms of field, facility etc.

I thought his hire was going to be a disaster in recruiting. As did alot of people. Then they closed out recruiting with some solid players and their class was top 40. So I think a little pressure eased off him. Now he goes and does this. Man just likes to make things hard.

I think there has been proof of that in multiple instances. I don't think this instance is really one of them. In this case, I think it's more or less Edwards speaking the truth. People have turned a blind eye to it, but Harbaugh has said on numerous occassions that people have to battle through things. If you are legit injured, ok, then you're injured. If you are "banged up", well, everyone is banged up, it's football. This happens everywhere, because it's a part of football.

I get that there is a tide change with how people perceive injuries in football and football in general. SOME of that is appropriate. Playing guys who are legit hurt leads to further injuries and potentially to injuries that have more of a lasting impact.

But this is also still a violent game, that is as much about mental toughness as it is physical toughness. If guys aren't willing to be mentally tough, if they aren't willing to show some pride, some perseverance, and tenacity, if they aren't willing to get a little steel in their spines, then they aren't helping the football team. If they aren't doing what it takes off the field (class work, rehab, etc.) to get on the field, that's not going to cut it. If they aren't getting on the field because they think they're set more than they they're actually injured, that's not going to cut it.

So yeah, saying, you have a scholarship to this university, but you're too injured to keep on the team (medical redshirt), or you need to focus on the classroom, or you aren't benefitting this program, then fine, you have a scholarship to this university but not an obligation by this staff to be a part of this football program. You can stay on scholarship here or you can transfer. This happens everyone, Edwards is just speaking some truth. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. That does get guys to perk up a bit, it does get guys to focus, and sometimes that attitude change is needed, whether you perceive it as old school nonsense or not.

Back in 2005 when Ronald Johnson blew out his ACl all the big time programs stopped sending mail and didn't offer...Except Michigan

Michigan (carr) invited Ronald to a game in 2005 when no on else would talk to him.

Ronald gave us a verbal that day....but soon after returning home is mother made him take it back.

During the next few months Ronald told Mallett and Terrance Taylor he was going to Michigan. (that exlains why Mallett came out on rivlas.cmand spilled the beans...So he wasn't lying its just that Ronald didn't want everyone to know yet)

Ronalds Mom wanted him to keep everything hush hush.

Dring RoJos recruitment his High school coaches were whispered to be keeping mail and phone calls not Michigan related from RoJo....His family heard these rumors and the relationship was damaged severly between RoJo and his high school coaching staff.

During his official visit on December RoJo gave a second verbal to English in the UM weight room in front of many defensive players... but told everyone to keep it from public knowledge.

Terrance Taylor made sure to tell RoJo on his official visit to take all of his visits.

Ronald had no interest in taking more visits because he was set on his school he would go to.

What seems to have pushed it over the edge was the florida visit.Ronald was...and I quote "Blown away" from the visit...

Yesterday at Muskegon high school rojo was visibly upset...and told his muskegon coaches that he had to talk to them...(FYI if you havent picked up by now his high school coaches are pro michigan)...

His mother showed up and wouldn't let the coaches peak directly with RoJo during which time she told them that Michigan was out of contention with Ronald....A small verbal war soon happened between the Johnsons and the coaching staff.

Later on yesterday Johnsons mother went to a Muskegon udge (family friend) and had him call the Michigan coaching staff that Ronald was done with Michigan and they had no chance in getting him....

The Johnsons also had cut off all contact with Michigan and cancelled all visits with the coaching staff.....They refuse to talk to anyone with Michigans staff and remain that Ronald is done with them.

It's clear that the rumor of the muskegon high school coaches holding back info from ronald info (which was rumored) had an impact in Mrs Johnson feeling betrayed.

PS. Ronalds mom called Michigan a few days ago and led them to believe her son was still very interested.....so either she was telling the truth and Michigan was still in the lead at that point are she was lying to them to set them up for this great fall.

English and Carr are now in Cali and even though they cannot speak with the Warrens they feel the presence could help in getting him...

Do real players actually do this?  I would think that anyone who wants to be out on the field impressing the coaching staff is trying to heal up as fast as they can.  Threatening them with being cut because they are hurt won't fix anything.

If your players are so lazy that they are faking injuries to avoid practice, you have some serious problems to solve.

There is a certain OL on that team who is straight nasty and going to be starting his true junior year and starts at both LT and C and is a monster.

Michigan offered but the Dueche Drevno never followed up w him and then set a meeting at his school to talk w him and the coach and never showed up and never even called to cancel. That OL never heard anything again. I know first hand how interested he was in Michigan as he and Brederson became good friends at UA game and hung out a lot and have kept in touch since.

Thanks Drev!!!

In NO WAY do i read that as you better play hurt or not play at all. I'm a football coach, and i completely read that has some kids have a tendancy to get comfortable in there. There's a difference between Pain, and Injury. I beleive that's the message more than anything.
