In what is hopefully the first of many such honors, CBSSports has bestowed John Beilein with their national coach of the year award:

Michigan's last loss was Feb. 6, two days after the Super Bowl. The Wolverines have won 13 in a row, and Beilein is going to his first Final Four since his team lost to Louisville in the 2013 title game. And they're doing it on defense -- despite Beilein's longstanding reputation as an offensive guru, this team is building its reputation on one of the nation's best defenses. That's the reason why the 65-year-old Beilein, one of the most respected coaches in the game, is CBSSports.com's Coach of the Year.

There's one more thing that makes it special that Beilein is our national coach of the year. This season of college basketball has been shadowed by the FBI scandal that broke in September. Yet here is Beilein at the end of the season, still winning despite his reputation -- among peers -- as the cleanest high-major coach in the country. To be sure, Beilein won this award because his team vastly exceeded its expectations in making a Final Four run. But it's pretty sweet, during a dark college basketball season like this one, to be able to award a coach who is respected for things other than winning. -- Reid Forgrave

Same, Reid Forgrave. Same.

Beilein, quite notably, not only accomplished this without anyone on the first- or second-team All-American list, he did it while facing two such players: OSU's Keita Bates-Diop and (grins) MSU's Miles Bridges.

This made my day (and probably pretty good for him too lol)

I'm not surprised that Coach is getting his well-deserved props this year - he is a beacon of light in a dark, ugly swamp.

So happy that he is our coach - long live (and coach) John Beilein!

Congrats to UVa coach Tony Bennett who has had the last 2 weekends off so plenty of time to clear off room on his mantle for the AP Coach of the Year.

So regular season only matters to the AP?

The AP gets it wrong all the time.  I was stunned when I heard this about Bennett earlier today on the radio.  Bounced by a 16-seed, and still CotY?  What a joke.

Beilein only mowed down the B1G in the tournament, is in the Final Four, and has won 13 straight, and 32 games...so far.  Thank you, CBSSports for getting it right.

You deserve it, Coach.

I’m a UVA fan and I agree. UVA ruined one of the best regular seasons in history by going 17-1 in the ACC including beating Duke at Cameron indoor, plus taking the ACC tourney (convincing wins over Louisville, Clemson and UNC) and locking in the top overall seed. They were dominant and Kenpom #1 and looked the part. Then they get shived by a 16-seed plucky group of Marylanders? Ugh. The UVA Horror II. If that happened to Xavier you can kinda believe it. But this made no sense. It was unstoppable CPU-controlled-opponent in techno bowl mode. Every shot went in, especially the 3’s Made no sense. UVA fans will have PTSD for decades. I don’t see how you can get the award after that. Almost cruel to give it to him. It just makes it worse. It

Anyway, unfortunately it invalidates what was a masterfully coached season. People should remember that he does what he does with mostly 3 star talent. Certainly less than Michigan’s. One good class in 8 years. Unearthed talents like Malcolm Brogdan , Mike Scott and Justin Anderson. Similar recruiting profile as Beilein’s in terms of underrated talent and developing it. He’s really good at developing off guards.

He’s need to pull off his version of a Beilein and come out with a top 10 offense to pair with he usual defense. He had that in the 2013/2014 Brogdan, Anderson squads that went S16/E8 and lost MSU and Syracuse in tragic fashion.

Congratulations Coach Beilein.

Congratulations to the entire basketball team staff.

Congratulations and thanks to the players who work hard and are competitive winners.

And congratulations to me and every Wolverine who supports Michigan and our sports teams.

It’s time like these that really hit home the pride of UM pedigree. It’s not by chance folks - it truly is special. Leaders. Best.

Or get screamed at daily by a little mountain dwarf.  You would have to pay me a helluva a lot more than $40 to get used and also see my future earnable income decrease.  Just sayin'.
