It's official: John Beilein has now replaced all of the banners that were taken down.

Submitted by M-Dog on

Two Final Four banners, a Big Ten Tournament Championship banner, and even an NIT banner were taken down.  It felt like the end of Michigan basketball.

But Beilein has now put up two new Final Four banners and a new Big Ten Tournament Championship banner to replace them.  And he's even replaced the NIT banner with a second Big Ten Tournament banner for extra credit.

It certainly does not feel like he's done putting up banners at Michigan either.

And he's done it so squeaky clean this time around, even his own players make fun of him.

Most underrated coach in America.  But that's starting to change, and the talent is starting to flow in in recognition.

Johnny Banners.

Glad the team won tonight and everyone si happy.

Chris doesn't need to apologize and the legacy of the Fab 5 is cultural, social and long term both at U of M and societally. The Fab 5 transcended basketball and made a remarkable impact in the 90's influencing how teams dressed, how fans dressed but, moreso, they enabled an enthusiasm about basketball, about Michigan and about being young that I haven't seen since (of course, I got older). This includes the current team.

I was at Crisler during that time and I have never felt that same energy. Proud of the current team but the sanctions on the Fab 5 and self-righteous flagellation of a segment of the fanbase in terms of apologism is ridiculous.

Hang the banners. Celebrate the Fab 5.

Celebrate the current team, also.

And loved watching the Fab Five play, but those banners don't mean anything. It's better to leave then down as a reminder that there is a right way to win. These Michigan teams' victories under Beilein are really special and the old banners are not at the same level. No, I'm not for ostracizing the Fab Five, but they no longer define Michigan basketball.

Does taking the banners down tarnish THAT legacy?

Because I don't think so, and I think a lot of other people agree.

We still remember the impact of the Fab Five. That never goes away. Banners being locked away does not affect that.

So why put them back up until the other off-court factors get covered? It is a petty thing to care about that much. We have new ones now, and very well could get more.

Did they hang a banner tonight? Because otherwise I feel like you probably use “literally” when you mean figuratively as well.

Well technically, there is also the 1997 NIT championship banner that hasn't been replaced  . . . but we can pass on that one.

Great man, tremendous teacher and leader, fantastic representative of our university...

and one hell of a basketball coach!

The man has mastered his profession. So very grateful to have him as our coach.

Congratulations coach B!

If we don't hang the banners then we should at least let bygones be bygones and welcome back the Fab Five in its entirety.  There is no point in continuing to punish both Chris Webber and ourselves for things that football and basketball programs are routinely getting away with.
