Year Three Curse Strikes Again

Submitted by ScooterTooter on

One of the big reasons I was excited about Michigan hiring Jim Harbaugh is I saw the deficiencies this team would have come year three. I figured that like other elite coaches, he would be able to conjure up a decent season in a year where the team wasn't expected to do much. Something like 9-3 with a victory over a rival.

Instead, for the third straight regime after Lloyd Carr's retirement, Michigan football's year three was abysmal after a promising start:

2010: Michigan starts 5-0, loses at home to Michigan State, ends up 7-6.  Rodriguez fired. While the offense and record improved, the defense is the worst in the program's history. Losses to both Michigan State and Ohio State. Recruiting ends up 30th in the country.

2013: Michigan starts 5-0, loses a blunderfest on the road to a mediocre Penn State team, gets blown out by Michigan State, finishes 7-6 with losses to both Michigan State and Ohio State. Hoke is retained, recruiting ends up 20th. TBH, its crazy to me how this season matches the beats of 2017-18, from the inexplicable first loss, to the road blowout loss to a rival, to the 0-3 finish with a closer than expected game against OSU and a disappointing bowl performance. Yeah, the circumstances were different, but the highs and lows were almost identical.

2017: Michigan starts 4-0, loses a blunderfest at home to Michigan State. Gets to 8-2 before losing three straight to finish out the season 8-5. Losses to both MSU and OSU. Bowl loss to a mediocre South Carolina team following a shocking collapse. Recruiting finishes up 19th (at the moment).

The difference? Unlike the previous 2 regimes, I believe that Michigan is well set for success following this disappointment. A very good defense returns everyone. It would not be at all surprising for them to compete at a 2016 level.

On offense...all I can say is look at the 2011 defense. That unit went from the worst in the country to good in a single year. While Greg Mattison deserves credit, undoubtedly one of the biggest factors in this turnaround was the fact that Michigan was no longer starting converted wideouts and true freshmen 2 stars in the secondary. With a little luck (aka Shea Patterson's eligibility coming through), next year should be a very good year*. And if that is the case, then I think we will look at 2017 as a blip on a very successful tenure.

(*The flip side, of course, is that Patterson is ineligible, neither other QB pans out, Drevno really does suck and the OL remains as bad as it was last year and the defense is more 2017 than 2016. Another bad year (8-4 with losses to OSU, MSU and ND) results in more recruiting misery setting up Harbaugh for a make or break year 5. Hopefully it does not come to that.)

Next year can definitely be a bounce-back year. Losing Hurst will hurt, but the rest of the DL comes back and I'm sure Solomon will step up. Winovich and Gary will form arguably the best DE combo in the conference. Arguably among the best in America. And everyone in the back 7 will be a year older and a year better. Not at all concerned about the defense.

Next year, once again, is ALL on the OL and its progression. I'm a firm believer in that if the OL is fixed, much of the rest of the offense takes care of itself. If they can function as a unit and push a DL off the ball, everything else will be fine. Higdon and Evans will have room to run, DPJ, Black, Perry and Co. will have time to get open, and Peters/Patterson/McCaffery will have time to survey the field.

If it's more of the same where our QB is running for his life and RBs are running into brick walls, we could legitmately go 6-6 next year with losses to OSU, MSU, ND, PSU, Wisconsin, and possibly even Nebraska depending on what Frost can do with them next year. And in that situation, Harbaugh would literally have no other choice but to clean house on the offensive side of the ball.

Not likely, but possible.  This year's team only beat 1 team with as many as 7 wins, next year we play 6 teams that had 10+ wins this season.  This year's team might have gone 6-6 if they had faced next year's schedule.

8-4 is next year's baseline.  7-5 and 9-3 are the next most liekly records.

I will have concerns about the offense until proven otherwise.  What big game has this offense won?  If Harbaugh doesn't get his offense fixed, he will have wasted the some of the best defensive performances this school has seen in a couple decades.

With the way Georgia, Bama, and Ohio just keep reloading with amazing recruiting classes this all just seems so pointless. Not to mention PSU, Fleck's potential in Minnesota, now Frost in Nebraska, Chryst in whisky, and of course that garbage pail in E.L. My optimism continues to fade.

might be an analyst!  He's the best film watcher in the whole wide world.

And didn't you hear that we're studying the Eagles offense.  You know how well it goes when coaches watch some film talk to some coaches and then implement a system they have no experience with.  Wildcat 2016 baby!

Due to QB injuries.

This offense is complex.

Therefore, you need a solid/competent QB.

Helpful to have continuity at the QB position.

This is what happened in year 3:

QB1: 4-0
QB2: 3-1
QB3: 1-4

ridiculous. We are becoming more of a laughing stock than normal as we go stark raving mad on the board today. You are seriously arguing about if Brady Hoke's last team looks like our current team. I remember the team and the eye test didn't fly back then. We had a team that didn't develop or play with any consistency at all. The last 3 years we have been blown out by two teams and we have beaten everybody we were supposed to beat excluding SC in the bowl game. Nothing about that compare to the Hoke years.

I have watched Gary Moeller and Lloyd Carr lose to teams we had no business losing to. The point differential between losing under Harbaugh is drastically different and I do expect a lot of improvement as we develop a QB that can be effective. We saw that with Jake Ruddock as he got better as the year progressed. Wilton was not the answer and if Brandon isn't then Dylan will have to be. My bet is on Shea being the factor our offense needs.

We played the bowl game without two of our best linemen and had a productive day until the 4th quarter. I am not all stars and rainbows about where we are, but I am positive there will be improvement next year, so any of these end of the world scenarios being bantered about are counterproductive. Let's move Onward and Upward with the guys we have and enjoy this whole ride. Stop giving all of the other schools more material than they need to trash this great institution. Go Blue!!!.
