Well Here's This Probably Fruitless Pursuit Of A Grad Transfer OT Comment Count

i call him the CUBE MASTER

If your ears perked up when you saw that an All C-USA OT  (per PFF) was planning to grad transfer, you are not alone. Calvin Anderson is now a name you know:

Anderson's been Rice's left tackle for the last three years and has assembled a solid resume:

In 2017, Anderson arguably deserved greater recognition after he finished in the top 20 nationally in pass blocking efficiency, according to PFF. On the season, he allowed only one sack and nine quarterback hits.

Anderson’s season highlights are available here.

In 2016, Anderson graded out at over 90 percent in each game and recorded 26 knockdowns and five pancake blocks.

He had a season grade of 84. Michigan's returning tackles... did not. PFF analysis is necessarily influenced by strength of schedule because they can only grade you on who you play, but we've seen Michigan's OL flail against Purdue and Rutgers. The chance Anderson wouldn't be a serious upgrade over Michigan's #2 tackle are slim. on the WANT/NO WANT scale, Anderson is a WANT.

Anderson graduated from Rice with a degree in Mathematical Economic Analysis, so you'd imagine academics won't be a problem. Also:

More likely to be an issue: Texas. The snippet above comes from Burnt Orange Nation because Anderson grew up in Austin and the Longhorns are about as desperate for a tackle as Michigan is. Also various other teams.

It's a Hail Mary, and Michigan's OL recruiting has not fared well when trying to lock down a guy against this kind of pursuit. But boy would it be nice to pick that guy up. Michigan appears to be going full blast:

In terms of what he’s looking for as he makes a decision about where he will play next year, Anderson says, “Biggest thing I’m considering is what a school can offer in terms of NFL prep. I also want to play against the best talent. Basically, all that pertains to NFL development”. ...

In fact Jim Harbaugh will be down to see Anderson in person on Monday. Texas is sending two staff members tomorrow.

Anderson is immediately the most important name on Michigan's board.

Maybe this one is where being up north could be an advantage for us. The kid's from Texas and played four years there. It's only one year, and it's a great grad school, so maybe he'll find it an attractive alternative. God knows we can offer him the starting spot today.

Texas kid who UT supposedly now wants..."probably fruitless" sounds like a pretty good description of this from Michigan's perspective. Seems like we've been down this road before. Can always dream, I guess.

Harbaugh can just argue he offers the better deal based on what Calvin is looking for.

Tom Herman and Derek Wareheim will likely need to find a way to tactfully apologize for not offering the local footballer in 2014. I'm slightly optimistic on this one.

I'm sure that Tom Herman is going after this guy hard. Harbaugh will have to bring his A game if they want this young man. Is he the most highly rated transfer this winter/spring?

I think the wildcard issue is that Calvin Anderson was an Austin Texas native who wasn't offered by Texas. He ended up going to Rice, so his family was still close enough to watch him play for 4 years...so they might be happy to have him go elsewhere. The main point being never underestimate what being spurned, working hard, and having lots of options available at a later date including the option you never got, will do to open up the mind of even someone who at one time likely wanted to play at Texas.

Combine that with his comments that he wants to play somewhere with great competition that prepares him for the NFL. Harbaugh's got some good talking points that are hard to ignore on that front. Sent the most people to the NFL of any school during a recent year, hardest schedule of any team on Anderson's potential list for next year, and highest likelihood of a national championship based on the way too early polls. (A talking point, at least). Also, quality grad programs he's likely interested in, duh.

I don't know that any of that is going to sway him, but head coach visiting in person is a good sign that we are serious.

Or maybe just playing for a coach who had eleven players drafted and who had a bunch of undrafted free agants. "Come play for us and I can assure you every NFL scout will be watching you".

When you play for a man who has Harbuagh's NFL record, the team doesn't need to make the playoffs (as much as I want that), Harbaugh knows how to maximize his draft potential. Damn he'd be a sweet get at a real position of need!

to have this guy. It likely won't happen. We can't seem to get over the recruiting hump with O linemen. I"m guessing that we won't until we get a batch of good linement who do well and go to the NFL; so we have some coaching up to do.

I can't stress enough my belief in a solid O line being a key to our long term future. We have to get this right at some point. I truly believe a solid O line is a huge force multiplier to the team. QB's have more time. RB's have more space. WR's can improvise more if need be. And you can use it like a club to bludgeon a good defense.

We need some of Wisconsin's O line fairy dust. We lost ours somewhere.

This will be a tough pull. Maybe there’s a masters program he’s really interested in at Mich and not Texas? I think both schools are great at Econ and applied math.

Yeah, they both have outstanding economics schools.  A lot of universities don't offer standalone Masters in Economics degrees, but Michigan and Texas do and they're both probably among the top 5-10 Master's programs.  Anybody know if we have any top-notch recruiters in the Applied Economics program?

I know some people have been begging for firey Jim to come back on the sidelines...I think we see him full force next year.  Got all his players now, has depth, young very hungry talent, and that brutal schedule.

he is ready to come back

Personally I think he didnt come out much this year (if at all) is because he knew what type of team we had...good team, not great.  The ignition key might turn on
