Patterson - the possible nightmare scenario

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
Just saw a discussion elsewhere about a nightmare scenario involving Shea Patterson. Let’s say we accept his transfer. (1) It’s a reasonable scenario that Brandon Peters transfers. It’s not much of a vote of confidence. (2) that means O’Korn plays the bowl (whatever) (3) we still have to wait and see if Patterson is cleared to play in 2018 which would require him to sue the NCAA Let’s say we take Patterson and the NCAA holds its ground and he has to sit 2018. (1) again, O’Korn plays bowl (2) Peters probably stil transfers as the legal battle will take time to play out and Peters probably doesn’t want to sit around and wait to find out. (3) McCaffrey is your starter in 2018 with two true freshmen as the only backups while Patterson sits. (4) 2019 sees McCaffrey a returning starter competing with Patterson coming off a year on the bench. If the Patterson thing comes to be, Jim should hold off accepting his transfer until he’s cleared to play 2018 through whatever legal means. Otherwise it’s a pretty big gamble that could seriously damage the program.

There is nothing  nightmare scenario about Patterson coming.  He's a really good player at the most important position on the field.  You take him no question.

The other QBs best him or they do not.  That's it.  If one of them gets hurt, we have a good back up.  If they want to transfer, they do.  It's a much, much better proposition than only having two, one of which was ok and the other we haven't seen at all.

If a player doesn't want to compete against the best to win their spot in a meritocracy then they have no business being at Michigan.

Still waiting for the answer to this question. No one that I have seen has given any explanation - except for the people who mistakenly think he is covered by the NCAA ruling that individuals can freely transfer if they would exhaust eligibility before Mississippi can appear in a bowl game again.

Patterson wears 20 and Peters wears 18. 20-18 = two quarterbacks on scholarship for 2018. Dylan McCaffrey wore 12 in HS and wears 10 now. Tom Brady wore 10 at Michigan and wears 12 now. 12-10-12+10=0. There will be 0 scholarship QBs in 2019.

Wants to win championships. He's sick of losing to OSU and MSU more than we are. He knows the difference vs OSU has been QB play the past two years. I think he'll do whatever he can to bring in Patterson IF he thinks he would be a major upgrade. Let's not forget that Jim was more confident in JOK than Peters as recently as 6 weeks ago. That speaks volumes about where his head is with the QB situation, especially after the Speight transfer.

This topic is far worse than politics. Anyway, don’t you think Shea himself would want to know if he can play immediately or hasn’t to sit before he chooses a new school? Even if the college were dumb/ desperate, Shea would want to know what situation he’s walking into.

I was envisioning Patterson being cleared to play immediately, he decides to relocate closer to home (Toledo area?), and he chooses the Buckeyes!!! Now that would be a nightmare.

How 'bout the Toledo Rockets? Hey -- the family is there and he could entertain the whole country on weeknights with some historical MACtion. I'm all for it.

Why do we only focus on the worst thing that can happen?  Dream scenerio is Patterson comes to an extremely talented young team and solidifies the weakest position and takes them to a Championship.  He leaves early.  Peters takes them to a Championship the following year.  Recruits see this offense works and Michigan continues to reload.

Patterson is more mobile than Peters and would compensate for the other weakest aspect of this team which pass blocking.  Ideally, Peters would start behind a line that has more experience the following year.

If Michigan has a shot at Patterson, persuing him is a no-brainer.

are not going to be ready to play and will redshirt. That leaves us with two QBs. Patterson is likely one year and gone, so you definitely bring him in. The other QBs will still have 2-3 years left.
