Anyone have ideas on replacements for Fisch?

Submitted by Shakespeare on

Other than Greg Roman I haven't seen any names mentioned to possibly fill the void left by Jedd Fisch...

I've spent a great deal of time investigating and speculating as to who might make sense (not because I think I have great insight, but simply because I have nothing better to do). This is the list I've put together:

Cam Cameron - While you might have initially said "blah," he does have experience coaching WR's, experience at Michigan, a strong connection to the Harbaugh Family having coached with John and Jay in Baltimore. He would in many ways be kinda like the Greg Mattison of Offense: not likely to leave until he retires.

Jacob Peeler - He's currently Cal's "Inside Receivers Coach" and is considered one of the best recruiters in the country. Has developed a good amount of talent and is only 32 years old. He's been with Sonny Dykes for the past seven years so he's had his hands full coaching receivers in a pass heavy offense. He's a wild card as he doesn't have any direct connections to Harbaugh, but as we saw last year with Don Brown, that isn't necessarily a deterent.

John Morton - WR's coach for the New Orleans Saints. He served as Harbaugh's WR coach for his entire tenure with the 49ers and one year at San Diego. He's from Auburn Hills and also served as a long time assistant to Pete Carroll at USC so has plenty of experience in the recruiting game.

T.J. Weist - Worked for Harbaugh in an advisory role in year one at Michigan before joining Willie Taggart's staff at South Florida as Passing Game Coordinator/WR coach. Unsure if he'll be kept on at USF by Charlie Strong or go to Eugene with Taggart.

Please add on if there are any realistic names you think could be in play like Oakland.

No Chip Kelly's or Art Briles'.

EDIT to add a couple more names:

Jeff Faris - He's the WR coach at Duke and has been for the past two years despite being only 27-years-old (same age as JayBaugh). He coached Dylan McCaffrey's older brother Max to a record breaking season in 2015 so that could be an interesting connection to the program assuming the McCaffrey clan has nice things to say about him. He also coached Jamison Crowder in 2014 to a historic seasos.

Derron Montgomery - Worked with the Wide Receivers last year before leaving to become OC at New Mexico Highlands University. By all accounts he had a lot to do with the development of our receiving core last season.

...be looking for someone who is expert in pro-style passing and not spread offenses.

This might mean someone from the NFL but there are a couple of college OCs with UM ties who understand NFL style pass games. One is Mike DeBord ( I like him) but that makes Brian and others crazy---in and of itself not necessarily a bad thing. I think DeBo lost one game here when the D held the opposition to 30 or less. As an aside, he is a very good person, assuming that means anything. DeBo has NFL experience with the SeaHawks. I have no idea if DeBo is interested. I disagree with Brian about DeBo being a stick in the mud (if that's fair to Brian) since bringing zone blocking to UM--talking Lloyd into it---was a pretty big deal and one that worked out.

Then you have Tom Brady's choice (I would assume) Scot Loeffler. My choice, too. I know Lloyd Carr wouldn't beef. Scot accomplished a miracle (my opinion) at BC this year with zero offensive talent and a decline in the D with Brown departing. Scot is a fine person, loves Michigan, developed Brady, Griese, Navarre, Henne, Tebo, others, and has one year in the NFL, a year with Urban Meyer, and time with Frank Beamer. I can't say he would come back, but I would be surprised if he wouldn't listen seriously and I am pretty sure that money would not be the top concern. I sat in a QB meeting with Henne and Matt Gutierez and Jason Forcier (also Scott Kastl) and wrote about that in one of Brian's HTTV mags and also in my (probably bizarre and hardly well received) The Search for the Unified Field Theory (Football Version). I was mightily impressed with Scot and how those QBs responded to him.

Disclaimer, of course. I know both of these guys, particularly Scot, who I hold in high regard.

A promotion from within feels plausible. But who is that? TW, perhaps?

I do not know him, and he may be a great person.  As an OC, however, his track record is abysmal.  The "miracle" at BC this year involved moving from 126th in the country in FEI (2015) to 120th.  In contrast, while his VT offenses were mired among the worst in the country (94th in 2015, 112th in 2014, 92nd in 2013), VT improved to 60th this year now that he is gone.  He may have a history with Michigan, but his track record does not even show a Hoke-level of mediocrity as an OC.  (His one year at Auburn: 111th.  They improved almost 100 spots -- to 13th -- the next year after he was fired.)  We are hiring someone to assist with the passing game and WR.  Let's hire someone who has a track record of success in those areas.

Let's ask Calvin Johnson to be our WR coach and move Jeff Hecklinski to QB coach. Jeff threw for over 5,980 yards as a QB at Western Illinois and has held the position of QB coach in the past with Arizona and Central Missouri State. Calvin needs no introduction as a wide receiver and probably would be a greater recruiter with his magnetic personality. Recently married and no longer dancing with the stars, he may be open to a coaching career ! We all know Jim is going to continue to coach his Qbs as well.
