Drew Sharp has died

Submitted by Quail2theVict0r on

Just saw on Twitter that Drew Sharp died this morning. Pretty crazy, he was fairly young.

Edit: Freep link warning, but it's the only site with an article up so far:

"Drew Sharp, a Detroit Free Press columnist since 1999, died this morning at his home in Bloomfield Hills. He was 56."

Shouldn't define him as a person. I've read some comments (not here really, but elsewhere) that people can't get past him essentially riling up a fan base.

At the end of the day, it's just a game.

A man's life trumps his work a thousand fold. And from what I've read about him, he was nice, humble, and awesome to everyone in him and in the industry. And he was a staple of this state for a LONG time. I don't know if there was a more well-known name in the media other than Mitch Albom.

I'll really miss this guy. I've lived away from Michigan for the past 35 years, and his points of reference and body of work just reminded me of my home state so much. This is reminiscent of when Joe Falls checked out, very sad.

There is something to say about his work, too, that's always crossed my mind. He went to Michigan, graduated from there as I did, and he never shied away from piercing the veil of the institution that, let's face it, can be overbearing and pretentious at times. I don't think he did this out of any kind of inbred hostility to the place, rather he just had a very high bar set for what it ought to be. He didn't always articulate that very well, but I think that's where he was coming from.

Sorry to hear about Drew's passing. I thought his articles were OK but kind of stopped reading the FP after they went negative on UM. Condolences to his fam1ily.

Drew Sharp was like an actor that found a niche playing bad guys in the movies.  That was his thing.

By many accounts from people that knew him, he was not a bad guy at all.  He just played one in his professional life.

It was a niche that worked for him in a very competitive field where it is hard to be visable, so he stuck with it.

How he wrote his columns was a gimmick he concocted to carve out a niche. If you read the glowing eulogies of the other Detroit writers today, they all point out the overly negative approach to incite the fans was his way of doing things. They dressed it up like he was providing some public service to fans who were too forgiving of mediocrity.

But let's be real.  It was an ecomic ploy. Like the more skilled hockey player who also fights good selling out fully to be the team goon.

He might have been a great fighter, but I don't think it's out of place for people to point out all aspects of how a guy went about his business when he was alive.

There are plenty of folks who were great sportswriters while being good, likable people. Sharp chose to be a prick. I have no respect for him because of that.  And it tainted his work to the point it had no value for me.
