OT: Pokemon GO launches

Submitted by MGoRob on

So, the much delayed and anticipated Pokemon GO launched in the US the other day. Let your inner-kid rejoice.

Despite several glaring issues: battery drain, server crashes, etc., it looks to be trending really high on social media.  I'll assume I'm not the only who has noticed random people running all over town trying to catch Pokemon.

For those of you not aware, Nintendo and Niantic, Inc launched this free app to catch Pokemon in real-life using a smartphone and its GPS and camera.  Works of art generally serve as stations to gather supplies and points of interest serve as gyms to hold and defend gyms.

I'm currently not in AA, but was wondering what has been turned into gyms and Pokestations across campus?  Sadly you can only see your immediate surrounding area and not scroll to different parts of the country to look.

SIAP, didn't see anything in the antiquated search tool

My personal favorite stories thus far are about Australian police telling kids to GTFO of their police station that is a gym: http://wtkr.com/2016/07/07/australian-police-warn-pokemon-go-players-to…

My 17 year old son is into this big time. He is on a travel team with boys from all the schools in and around A2. - they are ALL into it. They are traveling to East Landfill and Palo Alto the next couple weeks and the kids are just as excited to find new Pokemons.

While the game looks cool and it is another fun use for the smartphone, I worry about driving and paying attention to the phone.

I'm in the mindset of waiting until the kinks get fixed, then I'll give it a shot. I run 30 miles/week so I'm bound to find a ton of pokemon. Also, (warning humblebrag alert) I live in Hawaii so I should be able to find some of the exotic pokemon.

Also, #TeamBlue all the way!

Two pokestops here in the UM Chemistry Building. I was pretty impressed that the plaque commemorating the discovery of organic free radicals by Moses Gomberg (in 1900) is a pokestop.

I'm confused. Do you need To have the app up and running to come across these lil guys? Also, is there any way that I don't have to sign in using gmail every time?

If you want to get an idea of what real life objects are in the game. You can get an idea of them at Ingress Intel Map. Ingress is the game that inspired pokemon Go. All the objects in pokemon Go are the same in ingress. With the ingress intel map you can zoom in anywhere in the world.  Will they do the same for pokemon go? I have no clue but good luck.

Am I the only one upset that we don't get to actually battle the wild pokemon? you just toss the pokeball at them to catch em... not much of a pokemon adventure. Let us use our current pokemon to weaken/then catch the wild pokemon like you could in the old gameboy games plzzzzzzzzz
