OT - What are you giving up/doing for Lent?

Submitted by MH20 on
For those who participate, what are you giving up (or doing that you normally wouldn't) for the Lenten season? I myself am giving up any kind of pop, most sugar drinks (fruit juice not included -- I love apple juice), and candy/sweets. I will also be starting P90X, though of course that will go longer than the 40 days of Lent. My goal is to continue to stay away from these things (or at least limit their intake) while finishing the workout program, post-Lent.

My daughter and I are both giving up a true love - beer (for me) and pop (for her). Originally, she wanted me to give up alcohol and she'd give up sugar, but with a trip scheduled to Napa in two weeks with the wife, I told my daughter, "Beer and pop will be tough enough." Fortunately, she was cool with that. I'm hopeful I can go the full 40 without beer. I REALLY enjoy it so this will be a good test. Who knows, maybe I'll become a wine conisseur (sp?).

Going on a cruise the day after Easter. God told me in a dream he doesn't want me to be fat (or maybe that was my wife whispering in my ear)

I want to start visiting my grandparents at least 3 times a week. MGoBlog- I think I check this site more than any other site on the web (especially given all the OT posts that provide me with all the news I need to read.) But seriously i think i check this site about 40 times a day. I need to go to Rehab in Alabama where there are no internets. Alcohol- wait, that never works but damn i'd be able to save so much money! I'll try this anyway Definitely will give up Soda...Pop...Soda! No Swearing. (Note: I stack these goals up because it ups my chances that I'll succeed at one thing.)

I'm not Catholic, but I always give up something for lent. This year I am giving up dessert, soda, and I am limiting myself to checking mgoblog in the morning before work. Seriously, I would be insanely more productive if I wasn't constantly hitting refresh. National Signing Day was my low point. I was held hostage by my computer waiting for Demar to sign.

Don't feel bad. The goal is not to see how much you can sacrifice. The goal is self improvement through self control. Something that I plan to give up might be very hard for me but very easy for someone else to sacrifice. I will see the benefits of my sacrifice where the other person would feel no different at all. This other person, if they wish to increase their willpower would add something more than simply giving up pop. Like say...dessert. The reward will come in steps. Next year I will hopefully have more self control than I do now. Then maybe next year I can say to myself "I will give up pop AND dessert"

All the best with P90X dude! That is one tough and crazy program. Not trying to bring down your motiviation, but keep in mind to have a plan ready for post P90X, cause all the gains can dissappear with a few days on post P90X partying. I know from expereince. :(

Yeah, I know it doesn't take much to undo several months of working out. The good thing about this is that I am doing the workout with my roommate and 2 of our buddies. So we'll have a good support system with each other.

How many people here do the custom, whatever you give up, you are then rewarded on Easter, in your basket, or how have you... I ask, cause my girlfriend never did that before, though now we do it every year.

J/K my fiance' is from Western PA and I'm from Eastern so growing I called Coke or Pepsi soda she calls it pop. I think the line is Penn St in PA where people call it different things. Most people call Cheesteaks "Philly" we just call them steaks. Ok enough rambling on I'm giving up Ice Cream and Wings, not together as that would be sick.

A lot of my Catholic friends do/eat whatever it is they are giving up on Sundays (or at least one day during the week). That seems like cheating, but I guess it is widely accepted. I've never heard the Easter basket thing, but that seems like it would be a secular way of doing things. Whatever works for you.

The 40 days of the Lenten Season do not include the Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, these are known as Feast Days. Now, I'm not Catholic, so I probably don't know all the rules, but I believe you are allowed to (even encouraged to) partake in whatever you've given up on those Sundays.

... I think I'm going with ice cream and chocolate. As an aside - who else is doing it that isn't Catholic? I'm down in Texas and most of the non-Catholics (and even some Catholics) don't know it's not just Catholics that do it.

Absolutely nothing. I'm convinced that giving up Twinkies for 40 days will absolutely NOT get me a better seat in heaven. 'sides, it's not in the bible.

If your goal is to get ripped then P90x is for you. What most people don't know, however, is that the workout is the easiest part of any exercise regiment. If you want to attain anything from it the most important thing is diet, followed by 8-10 hours of sleep, then the workout itself. Since I've gotten back into bodybuilding there aren't any foods I eat which are truly bad for me anyway and I can't remember the last time I had a pop so I'm going big this year. My um...girl buddy (insert something else for girl) is going to be pissed about this. I'm going abstinent for the whole damn thing. No girls, which will be tough because I'll be going to Miami next month, and basically without getting too gross what that guy did from 40 days and 40 nights. I have a show coming up in June so I figure this will help me focus on that more or it could give me a nervous breakdown. I'll be taking bets on it all week.

I could workout everyday all day if I could. Working out is actually enjoyable. It's the eating part that is the toughest. Diet is such an important part and eating the wrong foods or not eating the right amount can be detrimental. I've always struggled with diet, but never working out. BTW I think we're all above 12 years old, you can say "Fuck Buddy" on the internet. No one's gonna neg (At least I won't).
