OT- Movie talk

Submitted by ijohnb on
OK, so I'm bored. Looking for some pointless conversation. Anybody.... Godfather saga, (Parts 1 & 2, 3 doesn't really count) A little overrated. My last viewing, a litte underwhlemed, I must say. Its good in the same way that Jerry West was, ya know? On the other hand (and completely unrelated), 25TH HOUR, A SPIKE LEE JOINT. Anybody else think this movie is solid gold? Where is the Academy here? Norton, f#@king brilliant!

Top 7: 1) Casablanca - the best movie ever made, imo 2) American Beauty - personal favorite 3) Pulp Fiction - cliche, I know, but whenever I begin to think maybe it's just the "cool" choice to include, I watch it again and it never disappoints 4) Trainspotting - early Danny Boyle, still his best 5) Donnie Darko - saw this when I was 15, it totally changed my perspective on what a movie could be/achieve 6) The Best of Youth - my most immersive experience in a movie theater, it's an epic 6 hour Italian movie about 2 brothers spanning 4 decades, it was an unforgettable experience 7) Godfather Pt II - better than the first, imo, but I did get to see this one in theaters, could be the difference

It was a rough place- the seediest dive on the wharf. Populated with every reject and cutthroat from Bombay to Calcutta. It's worse than Detroit. EDIT: meant to reply to the white tiger

I am not saying in any regard that the Godfathers are not great, classic movies. My commentary of them is on a very high level, kind of like discussing Lebron James, of course he is phenomenal, that is a given, but upon scrutiny... Godfather 1, while the superior of the three IMO, seems to suffer from poor pacing, and jumps in the plot that are not supported by the on-screen events. Michael's character in the beginning of the movie simply did not have the qualities that could lead to his character at the end of the movie. Could he have changed and possibly developed more of the qualities necessary to run the family business, sure, but his transformation, at least from the events that transpired on screen, did not support a transformation into essentially a narcissictic sociopath, just did not add up. As for 2, I actually thought that the jumping back and forth between present day and Vito's early days was a little distracting. The flashbacks, IMO, were better served as kind of a prequel, a seperate film altogether perhaps. And I did not think that Michael's character ended up all that compelling. Just a lot of "scary" blank stares and self-important silences. I really think that his character lacked many of the dynamics that made Vito's character so compelling. Perhaps that is the point, as he had essentially driven the family into the ground by movies end. Anyway, of course they are great movies, just not beyind reproach.

First of all, 25th Hour is amazing. I moved to NYC in the same period that the movie is set, and that movie is everything my New York was. Some others: The Lives of Others Match Point Fast Times at Ridgemont High Fargo Run Lola Run Monsoon Wedding The Departed Horror: The Descent 28 Days Later Dawn of the Dead (both versions) Shaun of the Dead Battle Royale As a side note, I am dying to see The Crazies this weekend.
