Midnight musings: don't click here

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Spring game draft is set for Thursday. It will be an actual game just like last year.

Maize vs Blue. Woooooo!

But the spring game is still a 6pm Friday night game. Booooooo.

Are you going?

Do you even realize the spring game is coming is the real question? Since the athletic department has released so few details on the game that it's like they don't actually want people to show up.

I don't understand the big deal with the game being on a Friday evening. If you can/want to be there then go. If you can't attend then so be it. The program isn't going to be any worse off becaue the attendance is 25,000 instead of 40,000. Its a glorified practice that has almost no bearing on what will take place in the fall.

Agreed. People are grumpy about the spring game for very little reason. You live 2 hours away on the west side of the state? Leave at 3:30. If it means that much to you, take an hour or two off of work. I took a half-day off work to watch Michigan play in the NCAA Tourney on TV a few years ago.

If it's not that important to you, then stay home and watch it on TV.

The current forecast says there's a 70% chance of rain, a high of 56 and a low of 31.  So figure a game time temp of around 50ish, dropping into the 40's.

That's fine for me, but not the wife and kids.  They're pussies when it comes to weather.  Except my 4 year old son.  He's strong like bull.

Wife works, kids are in school, we live 3 hours away. Would have definitely been there had this been on a Saturday. Making it a Friday night makes it impossible to attend without forking out some serious cash. Hotel room, wife missing a day or half day of work, kids missing school.
This was dumb on so many levels and shows that TV will always come before fans in the seats.

...and yet it's not even a game.

It makes a lot of sense that television visibility is more important than fans in the seats. Not many fans show up on spring game Saturdays, anyway, and tickets have been free.

Let's look at this objectively:

Option #1: Have a spring game on Saturday afternoon. More fans can come from out of town so there might be 50,000 people in the seats. Tickets are free. Concessions cost money. There are 8 other spring games on April 2 and two Final Four games.

Option #2: Have a spring game on Friday evening. Fewer fans can come from out of town so there might be 25,000 people in the seats.  Tickets are free. Concessions cost money. There is 1 other spring game on April 1 and no NCAA Tourney games.

I'd say the differences are pretty negligible, or perhaps the broadcast will be more helpful for the program than having 25,000 people taking up free seats in the Big House.

television visibility is more important than fans in the seats.

This is indeed the world we live in.

So make everybody sit on the East side of the stadium, facing the cameras so that it looks like we have 50,000 on TV.

Problem solved.
