Is Lavall Jordan our Izzo?

Submitted by UMxWolverines on
Think about it. Up and coming assistant like he was. Izzo took over for a good not great Jud Heathcote. Lavell is known as a great recruiter. Does he take over once Beilein hangs it up?

So you want Beilein to go Chip Kelly on a kid in the full view of the public just so you can feel good about 20-year olds not living up to your expectations?

I know I'm being extreme, but that's kind of what it seems like comments like yours are getting at.

Deserves better. The facilities have all been upgraded since Beilein came in and all the resources are in place for a consistently good program. The recruiting or lack therof is pitiful. Let's face it recruiting requires tremendous effort and energy, do you think that's being offered by this staff? Not to mention the apparent disregard for good recruits from right in the backyard. Isn't it a little strange that Michigan has signed so many 4's and supposed 5's with the physical makeup of middle schoolers. Donnal has been in the program for years and looks like he has never picked up a weight in his life.

Between LeVert and Coach B is growing tiresome and does seem to throw off chemistry whether Caris has been factored into the game plan or not. I mean, is anyone 100% on what exactly his injury is anymore? One could make the case it's growing more mental now than physical.

I'd say having a Naismith/preseason B1G POTY candidate constantly be a game time decision disrupts morale. JB kinda screwed the pooch by saying its LeVert's decision to come back as now every game he's out, I think more and more fans are becoming less sympathetic towards what was (and might still be) a serious injury.

I see two major issues. Unless you are Duke, UNC, or Kentucky and can pull multiple Top 50 recruits every year, you need to make sure the 1-2 guys you do land can contribute. Kam Chatman's inability to even be decent is really killing this team who could use an All-Big 10 level player (or even something close to that).

Second, Beilein's inability to recruit a big man who can defend and protect the rim is baffling. This team w/ Jordan Morgan would be so much better. They don't need another guy who can hit an outside shot. They need a banger who will do the dirty work. They need somebody who can cover for a shoddy job by a perimeter guy on D once in a while.

He needs an assistant and program rework in the harbaugh mold (at least in terms of aggressiveness) to get the talent. Dude can flat out coach. Even when he has what is perceived as decent talent the McGrath class) look what he does. To be elite, he needs to address recruiting. That is it.

We will be back here at the same time next year discussing the same issues that haven't been addressed. I think Beilein is a good coach but he just needs better athletes for his system to work. He is not getting the athletes and it doesn't look good for the near future.

Next year we bring in 2 bigs. Davis is possibly the most unathletic player ever recruited to Michigan. Teske has the length and some potential but unsurprisingly is rail thin! So unathletic and rail thin 4s and 5s continue the bizarre trend.

Whatever you say. We were down double digits the entire second half except once when we got it to 7. That's what happens when you can't do anything except shoot it from outside...you can't count on outside shots when you need to make a run. Also doesn't help when you can't stop the other team from pounding it down your throat because your big men are just big traffic cones.

I don't see a lot of great talent on our roster.

Side note: I think JB is a great coach, I just don't care for his system. This system will always have a low success rate against teams with talented and physical big men.

As far as recruiting rankings Michigan does have talent.

4 Star Players This Program Had

Kelvin Grady, Manny Harris, D. Morris, Vogrich, Smotrycz, Brundidge, McGary, Stauskas, GRIII, Walton Jr., Donnal, Irvin, DJ Wilson, Chatman

Too many recruiting misses coupled with injuries spell doom.

First of all, Grady wasn't a Beilein recruit, so the denominator is 13. Of those, 5 played in the NBA. So your stat is bullshit. 5/13 4 stars to the League is actually not close to turrible. And you still have to account for the fact that a full 5 of them are still playing, so you can't measure their ceiling yet. Then on top of that, he put 3 stars like Trey Burke to NPOY and the lottery. Caris is also a pro if injuries don't derail him. So eyeing talent and development is not an issue either. You could argue that he should get more high 4s and 5 stars. But then again, the number of coaches that have both put as many guys into the NBA *and* achieved the same level of conference championship and tournament success over the past 4-5 years is extremely small. So again, I'm not saying there aren't reasons for concern, but you guys are just flat wrong in your assessment of what the concern is.

Beilein is a pretty great coach and we'll respected among coaching circles. He is definitely a teacher and a developer of talent in his system. He is what he is though, a guy who sticks with his system and is a developer. That's why he likes coaching. I suspect he would have the same amount of success at any school, not amazing but pretty good success. I don't think he could get a team like Kentucky with its players to play as well as they do normally but at the same time, I don't think Calipari would do as well if he were coaching the players that Michigan has. Beilein is what he is. At this point we aren't really a school that gets elite basketball recruits so there aren't really any coaches that would do a better job with what we have. He recruits smart basketball players and a lot of other schools recruit athletes. If you look at West Virginia... They have arguably had a better program under Huggins with far less talent. Just remember too that we have had Adidas recently. A lot of your better recruits play on the Nike circuit and that makes a huge difference in basketball recruiting.

not able to follow up on some great seasons.

older person without the energy or the stomach for recruiting.

there is going to be a change in head coach in the relatively short term. hopefully, the transition will be better than football. this may be manuel's first big challenge.
