“Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up it knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle -- when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

Now that is one great quote. SMASH

highschool coaches ever said that we would've looked at them like even bigger dipshits. Just saying. Must be a geographic thing. Knock the shit out of them always got us pumped!

That's not accurate, a gazelle needs to outrun the nth slowest gazelle where n is the number of lions chasing them.  If every gazelle had to outrun the fastest lion then one of the two species would go extinct as either the fastest lion is faster than the fastest gazelle and all the gazelles die or all remaining gazelles are faster than all lions and all lions starve...err, well, I guess the lions could eat something else, but it would be the end of the rivalry!

Ihedigbo remembers going into Brown’s office at UMass and inside a glass encased box on the wall was this quote that he recalls verbatim to this day: “Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up it knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle -- when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

You know, he has coached the defense in exactly zero games so far and I think I like him already after reading that quote. That's not a bad one at all for a coordinator's office wall.
