Prayers for a Buckeye

Submitted by Michigan Eaglet on

Sad story coming out of Columbus today, as following one of OSU's traditions to jump into Mirror Lake the week of The Game, which is done by thousands of students each year, one of the students suffered a cardiac arrest and after being rushed to the hospital, passed away. Even though we're always rivals on and off the field, we can acknowledge that some things transcend football and, as shown last week with the Chad Carr stickers, we are still one human family.

Prayers go out to the Buckeyes and especially the family and friends of this student.

Edit: Update: OSU has said it will cancel the Mirror Lake jump tradition.

I did the same thing in college and I can totally see how that could do that to someone. Prayers to the young mans family.

I had heard of the Mirror Lake jump leading to injuries before, but never death - that's the one thing you never want to hear, especially when it is something like students who were engaging in a campus tradition, turning a happy moment into a horrifying one. Very tragic and sad. Condolences to the family and friends of this student.

Not even remotely trying to be a smartass, but I can totally see that happening. Jumping into a freezing cold lake, when many of the students are already drinking, in the dead of winter, has never screamed "good idea" from a medical standpoint.

Terrible thing that happened, though. It really is.

A student from Dayton has died after he was pulled from Mirror Lake on the Ohio State University campus early Wednesday and university officials now say they will ban the jump next year. University officials identified the man as Austin Singletary, a third-year student from Dayton.
