Delonte Hollowell - Looking for Support for Graduate School [LOCKED]

Submitted by NeilGoBlue on

Hello,

Delonte Hollowell (DB 2011-2014) is looking for support for graduate school.  He started a gofundme page.

Whatever the MGOBLOG community can do to support a former player would be great. His info is on the page itself.

(I'm just an alumni that he reached out to).

http://www.gofundme.com/dhollo24

I pointed him to this thread, so he might be able to answer any questions himself.

MOD EDIT - locking this one. Way too many groan-inducing replies to make it worth salvaging. To the OP, if Hollowell is willing to post something himself here, let me know - that might be best. - LSA

I love that you called his 4 years on a football scholarship a "free" education. He did nothing to earn that tuition and it was just handed to him. All these fricken moochers who think they can just be handed a free education because they can run fast.

/s (in case it wasn't abundently clear)

"Not certain why a "hand out" has become a negative in this country."

it used to be a negative, past tense, and thats the problem - most people were too proud to accept assistance and in most cases picked themselves up, went after it and left children in the next generation better off.

if one can succeed (maybe not at easily or as quickly, but still succeed) without seeking handouts, then that should be preferable.  it used to be the norm.  if people will actually cough up their money, i cant blame this dude though, society has deemed it ok.

but asking for money immediately after commenting he just graduated from michigan debt-free - shouldnt that be a problem?  should he expect gofundme donations for his first house too?  wheres the line?  i realize some are necessary, but the problem is handouts, in any context, are not viewed as negative anymore

UPS gives tuition assistance, and they are hiring for the Holiday season, they will help pay for School, not all, but a good portion, that's how I got through school.

It's not totally unlike bagmen, but the NCAA can't do anything about it. It can only help recruiting for former players to get this kind of support from fans. What's the objection? Just jealousy, right?

We should do this on a regular basis.  Have every single player start a go fund me page for their grad degrees.  Wealthy fans can pick up the tab with a wink and a nod to all future recruits.

Sounds like a great way to employ the bag man without breaking NCAA rules.

Bagmen at Michigan would have paid for this if he was any good. Too bad he SUCKED. and if he was good at football he wouldn't need grad school at this juncture because he would be playing in the league. Stuff like this is what is wrong with the world these days.

I'm with you.  None of us is under an obligation to give money to him.  He is leveraging his participation in a sports team that many, many people love to support, and if some number of those people want to also show gratitude (or whatever) to him for that participation by helping him go to grad school, he's giving them an avenue to do so.  I don't see any harm in that at all.

Comments like your just make us look like the worst fans ever.

Edit: Just realized you are deep in the heart of Bolivia probably scraping donkey dung off of a mule farmer's shoe. I guess you haven't learned your lesson.

What's so hard about respecfully disagreeing? I'll personally never send money to a GFM because I think that the company is morally bankrupt but it doesn't mean the underlying problem or ask isn't legit.

I have student loans so what are you saying? Look I'm 30 and almost finished paying off my student loans and have a son and another on the way. I work full time, volunteer football coach, and am a full time parent. I get by just fine without handouts. I was brought up to not ask for handouts because if there's a will there's a way, I'm sorry if I offend someone by stating to get a loan I even said nothing personal.

I've been trying to think of a way to get on the internet outrage payday train.  You know, like the gay pizza place people.  They ended up getting like $1 million or something insane in donations.  I might be willing to lie publically and turn myself into a social pariah for that sort of cash.

Any ideas?

...getting a free ride for far too long as far as I'm concerned.  They expect food to just magically appear from nowhere.  They don't work.  They don't speak English. They they come into existence without permission after we've already been occupying existence for years and then act like they nearly own the place.  To heck with them.

The GFM Page doesn't come across super sympathetic as quoted above, but it also pushes a narrative where the public is going to be called upon for a personal investment. I cringle slightly when people ask for money on here for a friend who has cancer, etc, because it's asking for finances due to a common interest versus, say, a garden project aimed at the community. Vitriol isn't due to 'not having come up with it,' it's more a reaction to the use of a common interest towards a very personal, non-tragic goal.

Many degrees can be used for betterment. Claiming a MSW is for the common public good ignores other degrees that can be used as well. Perhaps strawman is more purposeful but when you start claiming one degree is better than the other because of a perceived direct influence, you're indiciting some while elevating others. A MSW can be used for a lot of things - bringing it up as a reason for acceptance is misleading.
