OT-Amazon Prime Day

Submitted by Eat Your Wheatlies on

So today is Prime Day at Amazon. They claim to have better deals today than on Black Friday. I ended up pre-ordering Bacon's new book, Endzone, and a new set of kitchen knives that were $160 under list price.

Did any MGoBloggers make any cool/necessary/impulse purchases? Support the blog and buy some material crap that you don't need!

If you already have a dvd/blue ray player capable of streaming just go with that. Or Xbox/PS3 or 4. If you are looking for a casting device, you can't really beat the chromecast for $35. The firestick was discounted on Amazon today. Apple users will tout Apple TV which is old, but still relevant. I recently got the Roku 3 in the process of cutting the cord for sling TV and it's a pretty solid comprehensive streaming/casting device as well.

I personally use a Raspberry Pi 2. I have it running Kodi (XBMC) and it accepts AirPlay, so I just find what I want on Netflix on my phone and then send it via AirPlay over to the Pi. It's $35 and has far more customized options than most other devices. It's also powered by the USB port on my TV, so there's not extra cords. Just the Pi, an HDMI cable, and the USB powering it. You wouldn't even know it's there since its secured to the back of the TV. Anyway, it's more work up front, but I love the capabilities.

but it in the ling run, this will bite them. I personally did get one thing out of Prime Day today...the notion that maybe after 4 years, this September I won't be renewing. What a decieving letdown this was.

And before today, I would have never have thought it play any role in mine. I'll probably get over it in a couple days, but right now I feel cheated and misled, and I don't usually give money to people/organizations who make me feel that way.

Exactly. Between my children, nieces, nephews, and others, there's always a birthday coming up that I forgot about and Prime two day shipping saves the day. And free returns no questions and no fees? the movies and music are a bonus.

honest...but $2 discount on x box controllers was not a smokin' deal. That's what I was looking for and a couple other things, and I did not find anything but hype.

My wife and I bought some baby stuff that we weren't planning on getting for a couple months yet. Ended up saving a couple hundred dollars. Pretty happy with that.

Bought a norelco beard/stubble trimmer for 38, the original price was about 55 so not too bad. Didn't know about the link that supports MGoBlog though, I'll be sure to use that in the future!

What a bullshit sale.  Nothing of substance except a very few select deals that were gone within seconds.  Fuck Amazon.

Saw a 32" TV for $75. Sold out of course. I was going to get one to keep in the deck box outside. I could just pull it out when I want to watch baseball/football on the deck. If the cold or humidity got it, who cares, it's only $75 -- but yeah, sold out in a flash.

People seem to have missed the fact that they said there would be MORE deals than Black Friday, not necessarily BETTER.

That said, I was still just as disappointed as everyone else.

If you already were looking for something that they were selling, there was some good deals. The 3 different times that had TVs, the PS4 bundle, tool sets, go pro, kindles, fire TV stick. But there wasn't much stuff where you would just buy because it's on sale. The cheap 32" and 40" sold out in about 15 seconds each, but the nicer LG 32" for $200 was up for about 15-20 minutes so I snagged one for the guest room.

Man people are getting so salty about this. They had hundreds of things on sale over the course of the day including some desirable stuff over 50% off.  Sure things sold out but that is because they had a lot of people interested.  They sold more stuff than black friday so clearly enough people found things they liked.  It also caused walmart and bestbuy to also put things on sale, between those 3 places you could get most items on sale for most of the day.  How is that bad?  Amazon never has and never will do a 20% off everything sale and anyone expecting that was bound to be disspaointed.

Prime is an amazing deal between the free movies and free 2 day shipping plus random deals throughout the year.  Not sure why people are so upset at Amazon for including things like diapers in their sale rather than just putting up fun toys.  If you were stocking a kitchen or had a baby yesterday was great.  Not every sale is about getting a new tv.

If you use PayPal then you should sign up for mrrebates.com.  You'll get 3% cash back at Amazon and other percentages at other sites.  If you are like me and purchase a fair amount online, it adds up to a few dollars every month or so.

I'm not affiliated with mrrebates and I'm not looking for referals.  Just an easy tip for those that like to save pennies.

Amazon's a retail company like any other retail company.  Which means they hype up sales to try and generate, you know, sales.  Probably 100 years ago Sears or Montgomery Ward or Hudson's would have these big posters up advertising a sale and people would walk out going, "I say, old bean, that was a dilly of a letdown."  Why anyone expects Amazon to be magically different because it's an Internet company and start selling $50 TVs is beyond me.
