OT- Miguel Cabrera hits HR #400
In his first at bat of the game against the Cardinals this afternoon Miggy went deep to center and hit his 400th career HR, another milestone in an already HoF type of career.
For reference of the people he's chasing down.

He was quietly in a slump before thursday. Slump is over. I think he has 4 dingers in the last 8 at bats. Hope this game doesnt get rained out.
It's almost unbelievable the splits Miggy has had between night and days games this year.

Not so fast... it needs to go 5 innings to be official. Rain is the only thing that could stop Miggy.

Ty Cobb won the batting crown 11 years in a row.

I would respectfully suggest including Hank Greenberg in your consideration.
But he's the only other one I could possibly add.

He was the god damned batting champion at 20 (twenty) years old. Fifteen time all star. I'd say he's got some credentials.
With the current delay and more rain on the way, #400 may be wiped off the books.

and FSD just reported that the game will resume at approximately 3:45 (in 10 minutes or so).
I told my Dad he was going to walk him. No way he was going to throw a strike. BAM! 400!
Wrong thread.
Sorry.
Players with a Triple Crown, multiple MVPs and 400hrs:
Jimmy Fox
Lou Gherig
Ted Williams
Mickey Mantle
Frank Robinson
and Miguel Cabrera.
Those are names among the greatest who have ever played the game of baseball. Without checking, I'm pretty certain that all of them listed above Miggy were first-ballot Hall-of-Famers.
Love me some Jose. Firecracker. Bailed Ausmus out from being fired by the board again - he probably should have pinch ran Gose for JD.
if he reached were speculating that Gose would pinch run for JD if he made it to scoring position. Didn't happen, probably should have, though.
Now Soria just got bailed out as Davis throws out Matt Holiday from RF as Holiday tries to stretch a lead-off hit into a double. Poor decision by Holiday!
Motor City Kitties beat the Redbirds!
Final 4-3 in 10.
First and foremost, nice win and nice performance by Soria.
Second, I do wonder just how high Cabrera will get on that list - my guess is that, if he can stay healthy for a good while, he could find himself nearing the top ten on the all-time list, but we shall see. In any case, I believe he now has more home runs than any Venezuelan-born player, or at least that's what I thought I heard on FSD last night.
As we all know, Al Kaline us the all-time leader in Tiger HRs with 399.
Without looking googling it, who can name the former Tiger players who have more total career HRs, players who accumulated some of their HRs for other teams before or after playing for Detroit?
And LSA, as for your speculation regarding Miggy's remaining career, I do believe he'll reach all-time Top 10 in homers as long as he stays healthy. Right now Mark McGwire is #10 with something like 583 or so; I'd love to see Miggy pass as many of the roid boys as possible.
Just guessing I"d say Maglio is one.
I don't think Ordonez even reached 300 in his fine career.
I would think Greenberg and Willie Horton have to be up there?
While Horton and Greenberg did hit the majority of their HR's as Tigers, neither totaled 400+ for their entire careers.
Here's some hints: there's now a total of 5 players with 400 or more homers who played parts of their careers with the Tigers. Only one of them is in the HOF; only 2 of them have 500+ HRs, the other 3 are below 500 total. Only 2 of them played more than a couple seasons with the Tigers. None of them played with Detroit prior to the 1960's.
Ohh tough question, I like it. I think Sheffield has over 400 and he played here for 2-3 seasons, although they were forgettable at best. Honestly I have no idea on the other ones, maybe Cecil?
I only know the answer because it was something I heard from Jimbo on a Tigers broadcast a couple seasons back.
2 more set of hints:
1)The other 4 of those 5 players had their highest # of career homers with these teams:
The Braves
The Rangers
The Giants
The Tigers
2) Two of these players got themselves World Series Rings while playing for the Tigers. One of these players hopes to get his this season and in future seasons.
The Braves as in Milwaukee. Eddie Mathews.
Eddie Mathews played his final two seasons (primarily as a pinch hitter, occasionally at 1st or 3rd) for Detroit in '67 and '68. Only 9 of his career 512 dingers were as a Tiger. Hall of Famer, he and Hank Aaron hold some kind of HR-hitting career record as most prolific duo ever.
C'mon, Tigers fans, step up your game here---there are still 3 more players to name who have spent time wearing the 'Old English D' and have 400 or more career HRs. I've given plenty of hints.
Darrell Evans and Juan Gonzalez, no?
I was at the first game a Tigers' home run was hit at Comerica Park... by none other than the best non-signing in Tigers' history.
... so Cabrera is the fifth?
Until Saturday, there were only 4, Miggy makes 5. And his next HR will move him ahead of Willie Horton into 4th place for most hit as a Tiger (something I learned since my last post). As for my trivia question, the name Juan Gonzalez is the one that trips up most, but none of them are easy, as only Evans (and now Cabrera) hit a substantial portion of their HRs for the Tigers. Hank Greenberg would likely have been on that list if he hadn't been one of the first MLB ballplayers to volunteer for the military during WWII; he was in his prime when he left for the war. Hank was hitting so many so quickly that he probably would have had about 200 more if he hadn't lost nearly 4 1/2 seasons while at war.

As for JuanGone? No surprise that nobody remembers him as a Tiger---most would probably rather forget it or deny it anyway, as barely mediocre as he was during that short stint.
... I believe the announcers said that Cabrera was the eighth-youngest player to reach 400, which got me thinking about who was the youngest to reach that milestone. I suspected it was A-Rod, which turned out to be right--though I didn't realize that Mark Mcgwire actually reached 400 in the fewest at bats. So, anyway, in fact-checking my A-Rod guess I discovered that Darrell Evans was actually the oldest player to reach 400 (I think I read that he was about 41-and-a-half at the time), though others have taken more ABs to enter the 400-club.
is the leader in the clubhouse. As I recall he hit north of 500 jacks. There is also Darrell Evans. Not sure how many hit, but he was a fixture in Detroit for a few years and hit his share of home runs. He even had the most HRs in the AL circa 1986.
Also has to be on the list. While he was forgettable with Detroit, he did hit a fair number of HRs.
by Soria. SOOOOO glad he's our closer now!
