$$ material on scout, so no can post. But it will be out soon enough. Not one of the top-top guys, but a solid player.

Borland certainly has made an impact, though I believe he only played running back in high school for what it's worth. But Alter (my Alma Mater) =/= Mooney in terms of exposure. Our beloved Michael Shaw went to Alter for 3 years before transferring to Trotwood, mostly because the coaches at Alter haven't shown a knack for getting kids to the next level aside from Nick Mangold. Again, maybe he's a future star. I hope he is, both for the Michigan football program and for Ray himself. But with seemingly more established prospects still on the board and merely 3 or so spots left, I'm a bit bewildered.

This seems like a strange paradox to me. When Carvin Johnson committed, the general sense I got from other fans was..."super sleeper, patrick omameh, rich rod knows how to scout em, etc..." But now, for the sole reason of scholarships being more limited, people are ragging on this kid for not being rated higher and on Rich Rod for offering him. Looking at his tapes, the thing that stands out most about him is how sadistic he is with his head to head hits. He seems like quite an angry individual in general, and more of those are needed on this defense. He also seems to have some speed, to be a solid (but not at all powerful) tackler, and to have great ball-skills. The fact that it gets us into an ohio super power is not irrelevant either. Rich Rod's got a great track record with lower rated prospects, so, for now, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and be excited!

It really makes no difference to me that he is a White player at a skill position. My favorite NFL team is the Bears.... and when I was a kid the Bears won the Super Bowl with Gary Fencik at Safety. Fencik was a beast. And yes, he is White. My problem with Vinopal, however, is that he appears to be quite short (between 5'9" and 5' 10"), with very short legs, somewhat questionable speed (listed at 4.56 by Rivals), and his hips don't seem particularly fluid. Fencik had great size but not great speed. John Lynch has great size and decent speed. Vinopal lacks size.... and doesn't appear to have the frame to add more size without losing considerable speed. Moreover, with big name prospects still on the Board and with so few spots left, those slots such be treated like Gold. We certainly should make a legitmate run a the very best players in the nation before giving a slot away to a 2 or 3 star prospect.... who is likely to still be available to us LATER IN THE RECRUITING PROCESS. In looking at his offer sheet, it is not like other major programs are beating down his door. Vinopal will likely be there for us in late January/early February. Why give him one of the slots now? I just don't get it. I guess I will just have to trust the coaches on this one.

ratings dont mean that much really i rather have a 3 star who has room to grow than a 5 star who maybe peaked there so many 3 stars who great players and become top draft picks like vontae davis who was a 3 star

It's not for everyone. More to the point, these scouting services take into account things like "ceiling" and "likelihood to reach the NFL." They project how well a player is likely to become a successful football player, not just how good they are today. Sometimes ratings are wrong, but every coach in America would rather have 5-stars.

Jordan Kovacs 2.0.. He seems like the type of player who will be good when hes an upperclassmen. Hope he can bring that hard hitting sooner though. Would like to see him after a year or two of Barwis.

State title game 2day ... Vinopal ran a 60 yd TD and he is obviously the teams top Defensive player ... i like him alot And he reminds me of Kyle McCarthy of NDame who also won State Tiles at Mooney

He looks like a heavy hitter, and he's a two way RB, so some ball skills apply. Also, as Jamiemac and others pointed out, he's another steal from Ohio. We won't know until he's playing, but so far I like the potential upside. Besides, I'm sure RRod is quite aware of his singing limits and the players he has good shots with. I doubt he'd 'waste' a scholarship on someone he didn't have some faith in. He's been in the coaching/recruiting game longer than we have ;)

If he were such a steal, don't you think another major program would have offered him? Ohio State? Nope. ND? Nope. Not even a garbage pit like MSU offered him. I know we're stuck with RR for another year, but how bare is he going to leave the cupboard when he gets fired next year?

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought that the coach was the final word in recruiting decisions. I guess you know so much more than me...should it be Chris Singletary to whom I direct any upset over another questionable recruit? Please tell me, oh wise one. Nah...no need to wait for you to say anything. The coach is responsible for our vast array of 2/3 star mini-commits. You might love those kids and approve of that route. If so, you likely approve of the job that RR is doing. I disagree. So...if that makes me a douche...so be it...at least my knees aren't sore.

...reference to put the exclamation point on a well-reasoned argument. Although perhaps not as timelessly amusing as comments like "get off your knees, refs, you're blowing the game," I really think your knees-not-being-sore point was a nice touch. I couldn't help but notice though, that while your not performing fellatio *could* certainly explain your knees not being sore, so too would you performing regular fellatio to the point of having well-conditioned, calloused knees. Maybe take that into account next time? I dunno, I guess I don't use the fellatio card in arguments all that much, and am thus not an expert.

The thing that is actually most encouraging to me about Vinopal is that he is 5-10, 175. It would be much worse to me if he was physically impressive but rated as he is. Our willingness to take him before signing day despite his lack of size and elite offers signals that we think he is, pound for pound, an outstanding player in terms of skills/fundamentals/desire. I don't mind guys like that one bit. I just wish we had room to take every 2010 target that wants to come, because there are so many guys we could use in this class...

Ratings don't matter. ^ That is a lie, straight up. Let's not convince ourselves otherwise. Sure Vinopal could turn out to be a great player but that doesn't change the fact that most 2 and 3 star guys never amount to anything more then an average college player.

I just started following recruiting and I have a question.....do universities renege on offers if they are at the capacity and better recruits come along after the fact? If so, is it common?

Magnus

December 4th, 2009 at 3:35 PM ^

They don't really renege on offers. They just stop calling the recruit and/or suggest that the kid won't get much playing time if he sticks with his commitment. I don't know how common it is exactly, but Michigan did it twice last year (with WR/CB Dwayne Peace and LB Jordan Barnes).

save all the freaking out about room in this class until we actually see us turn away a top rated kid? Just wait and see how things work out. People can throw all the names they want out there but guys like Parker and Jefferson are pretty big longshots at this point. The staff will not stop recruiting them and if they do decide to commit we will work it out I'm sure. There is no way this staff turns down top end defensive talent. So for now just be happy we added another talented defensive back to our team. In case you didn't notice we didn't exactly have a plethora last year. At the very least Vinopal will add depth for the future.

at least write a coherent sentence. I negged you because I have no idea what you are trying to say. Having said that, they did "throw Brandon Smith" - he started against Wisconsin and did not grade out so well. Kovacs did fine at strong safety when he was asked to play downhill and make tackles in the box. He struggled when asked to do too much in pass coverage at free safety. Keep in mind that Kovacs was not only a walkon freshman - but one that has overcome a serious knee injury. There is nothing not to like about that kid, and there were many players more culpable than Kovacs for our defensive struggles.

I like this commitment. I just don't like it NOW. I think he is the type of recruit that as the recruiting season winds down (late January/early February), and you have a ship available, you give it to him. But not right now. Not with so many big names still on the Board. The biggest issue I see is his frame. Standing between 5'9" and 5'10" with short legs, he doesn't appear to have the frame to add a whole lot more size. Make no mistake, the kid appears to be a hitter. I just wish he were a 6 footer. A guy that had the frame to add more size without losing speed. I see people referring to John Lynch. I hope he does become the next Johnny Lynch but there is a huge difference between the 2 players. John Lynch is a big man.... 6' 2". Vinopal appears to have the body of a cornerback. And a somewhat smallish cornerback at that. I will just have to trust the coaches.

The question now becomes...if it was not before...which commitments are not going to end up signing!? QB: GARDNER SB: WHITE FB: HOPKINS WR: ROBINSON, WILLIAMSON WR: MILLER SR: DILEO SR: DRAKE TE: JACKSON LT: LG: wilson C: PACE RG: RT: NT: hankins, beachum DT: TALBOTT, ash DE: WILKINS, murphy, bryant Q: PASKORZ, KINNARD MLB: WLB: SLB: furman FS: ROBINSON, JOHNSON, parker, anderson SS: JONES, VINOPAL, knight CB: CHRISTIAN, TALBOTT, grimes CB: AVERY, WITTY, boyd K: P: HAGERUP ...Two scholarships left, twelve prospects that we still have a serious chance with and are pursuing hard. It's clear that a number of our commitments aren't going to end up signing with us. I'm going to be the first to rank them in order of that happening: 1) Williamson - There are three other committed outside recievers. Those three have all been on campus a number of times since making their commitments. He has not, and location is not an excuse. 2) Kinnard or Paskorz. There's no reason to take two 'quicks' in this class with a stud frosh starting there this season, and another stud (Wilkins) coming in at DE. Neither of these two have been on campus in a while, and again, location is not an excuse. If Bryant commits, then both of these two could be on the outside looking in. I don't think that we're going to sign Grimes and Murphy, but if that happens, it'd create a similar situation. 3/4) Talbott brothers. Starting with the DT - If Ash commits, there's no need for him. If Hankins and Beachum commit, there's no need for him. These two are a package deal, so, if we lose one, we lose the other. *If we get just Hankins or Beachum, then we'll keep the Talbott brothers, and the attention turns to either Avery or Witty, especially if we sign Grimes or Boyd. 5) Johnson or Vinopal. If one of the stud safties we're going after commits, Parker, Knight, or Anderson, then one of these two lower ranked safties could be on the outside looking in. If two of them commit, then both could. ...I hate being the dick that has to put this list together, but its inevitable, isn't it?

no, he who shall not be named is dead. this is a reformed poster that has changed his ways and abides by the popularly established rules and guidelines of the board, regardless of what he personally thinks about them. i am just a passionate fan, eager to talk and share information about michigan football...and not to piss everybody off.
