Jim Harbaugh, I'm Not Worthy
I got sick this week and missed work.
How many MGoUsers out there could honestly make the claim, "I don't get sick"?
I've met a few machines that would go on ~five year stretches without taking a sick day. Me, I usually have one or two sick bouts a year of one or two days each. How about the rest of the board?
EDIT: for MattisonMan

I'm 39 now. That was due to a 3rd degree sunburn all over. I was like a lobster (no offense to any lobsters that may be reading this). However, rather than just call off, I stopped in at work and showed my manager. She totally understood why I could barely move.

(Knocks on wood) Started my first job out of college 4 years and 10 months ago and still have not called in sick once*.
*I will probably go home and puke my guts out from the flu tonight.

You may be sick tonight, but you'll still show up for work tomorrow, damn it!

Does taking a day off from a terrible hangover count?
February 11th, 2015 at 1:10 PM ^
One exception, were there awful toasts being given throughtout the night due to the amount of alcohol consumed? Then yes, yes it counts.

Over my career I've averaged about one or two sick days every few years. I would have taken one a couple of weeks ago but it coincided with midterms and an academic competition I was involved with, so I didn't.
Instead, I came in and curled up on a mattress in the stairwell and refused an IV. /BrianWilliams

I am sick right now and at work. However, instead of working 10 hours today like I normally do, I will only work 8. I will also go to bed at 8pm tonight. Haha.

So now your co-workers and probably their kids can get sick too! Super fun.
In case you can't tell, I'm being very sarcastic. Stay the hell home when you're sick.

C'mon, man! You should be smart enough to completely discount 98% of the shit that appears on these circle-jerk threads!!

might not be that easy. A lot of places these days don't give sick days anymore. They just lump days off into "PTO" and any day you take off is basically a vacation day. So there is a massive disincentive for taking sick days.
For contract workers it is even worse. If you take a sick day, you don't even get paid.

And Timmmaay - my co-workers are the one who got me sick, so eff them.

I was out with strep a few weeks back for two days... probably could have come in, but thought it was best to stay home until the antibiotics had me non-contagiuous. I don't want to be patient zero that gets the office sick.
Fast forward to last week... a couple of guys come to work hacking and sneezing constantly. Pretty much the entire office has now been sick the past week with numerous people not coming in. If you're sick, stay the fuck home.

you people who go to work sick are insensative...you get others sick arround you with your plauge, then they take home your nasty ass plauge and get there family sick...

This is a true statement, but if you are made to come in, then its not really on them. Hopefully most people can work from home.. Also, its "plague", and I am not sure we had to take it all the way to a deadly disease.. We were just talking about being sick, like I don't know, a cold.

The key word in there "hopefully". It was in regards to the first poster saying that people who come in to work sick are insensitive. I was actually trying to show sympathy for those people because usually you can't work from home, so what are you supposed to do to be sensitive, especially if things need to get done. Therefore, maybe its not insensitivty, maybe people come in out of need, unless HOPEFULLY they have the ability to work from home.

Am I the only unethical person on this board who plans being "sick" at the end or the beginning of a vacation to add one day to my vacay without using my PTO??
Ooops, my bad..I mean my VP basically knows I do it, he does it too.. But actually missing work because I am sick... nah, never done that.

I get "sick" on opening day every year, its wild
and now that the all star game is coming to Cincinnati this year I will be "sick" that entire week
February 11th, 2015 at 1:26 PM ^
Well played.. I have a mid-week golf tournament thats scheduled every year in May. It is amazing how EVERY year I seem to always get "sick" on that specific day.. It sounds a little like your Opening Day bug.

No sick days since 2009 and the several I took in 08/09 were hangovers. Now I will probably be sick by Friday...
Also - agreed with the above posters: You people (YES YOU PEOPLE) who go to work sick are the worst type of coworkers, right up there with egomaniacs, lazy people who don't follow-through, and OSU/MSU fans.

I take sick days all the time. I also get sick all the time.
I'll easily get in more trouble with my boss and HR if I come in while sick vs just taking the day off and resting.
February 11th, 2015 at 1:15 PM ^
I typically average 2 or so days per year for myself (prone to sinus infections and colds which I would rather not share), but because I have kids and a pretty generous bank of accrued absence time (about four months or so worth right now), I will sometimes stay home or work half days when they are sick as well, so I am probably out for about a week per year due to sickness of some kind, which isn't so bad really. I do telecommute on some of those occasions too, so it evens out when it comes to work demands.
February 11th, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
If you get sick and don't give the boss notice of you getting sick, they call it 'unscheduled sick leave'. The first day is always unscheduled, the next day (if you take a second day off) is normal sick leave as they consider the first day notice of the potential next day.
Too many hours of unscheduled leave and you take a hit on your merit review.
Lots of folks come to work sick here.

I get sick every year during the Big Ten tournament. It's really weird that it keeps happening on the same weekend every year.

I went 21 years with no sick days until I tore my patellar tendon and had it surgically repaired the day after xmas. I missed the next 4 weeks - not fun.
