Michigan adds former 49er Al Netter as GA
Coach Harbaugh just keeps loading up quality staff. Al Netter played for the 49ers last season. He's a Northwestern Grad who started 52 straight games at left tackle.

Can you really call him an "NFL guy" when he's a recently-out-of-the-league player trying to get into coaching? It's not like he was ever on an NFL staff. He's barely 25.

I think playing football in the NFL is one of the primary ways one becomes an NFL guy, but I could be wrong. I was never in the band.
February 10th, 2015 at 8:42 AM ^
Not to mention, the years of hard work and dedication to make it to the NFL in the first place...a level where a very small percentage of high school or college football players even get to at all.
February 10th, 2015 at 9:09 AM ^
My point was "NFL guy" in my mind is for guys who have already been on a staff and coaching in the NFL, whereas a GA trying to break into coaching is a GA getting into coaching. If this is how we define "NFL guy," than pretty much every coach on every staff is an "NFL guy."

levels of football (HS, youth, college underclassmen), when you reach the upper level of football you are in fact coaching. Upper classmen are coaching the younger guys, NFL veterans/starters are helping and coaching rookies and newcomers. They watch unimagineable amounts of film, turn in scouting reports on the payers (not just teams) they will be seeing on the field and tendencies, etc. He may not have the teaching/ item analysis, which is why he is a GA, but he certainly has the insight and experience to coach the OL position.

Where did I ever say he wasn't qualified, properly insightful, inexperienced, etc.? I think this is a great hire, and a clear picture of where Harbaugh wants this program to go. He had a cup of coffee in the NFL, but he's also a former team captain at Northwestern, which seems to be the model of academic/athletic balance Harbaugh favors. That's huge.

I believe the average NFL career is around 3 seasons. If Nutter made 52 starts with the 49ers, he would have to have played there at least 3+ seasons. If that's a cup of coffee, then it's a quintuple venti latte.

Just pointing that out for accuracy.

Hold on. Can't let that go unchecked.
Prety much every coach on every staff?
Hoke
Funk
F. Jackson
Borges
Hecklinski
AKA the HC and the entire offiensive staff, unless I'm forgetting someone. Did any of them ever coach or play in the league in any capacity whatsoever? Please correct me if I'm way off here, but I don't believe that they did at all. I see Heck played in the arena league for a tiny bit...

I'm not knocking the guy... I think he's a great hire and definitely a great resource to have around the program. It's a semantics thing.

I think you are mis-remembering here on your entire premise.

I tend to think of "NFL guy" as a term used for coaches who are coming back to college after coaching in the NFL. But, hey, whatever. Apparently I'm wrong.

So... Tom Brady isn't an NFL guy?
Tomato, tomatoe, potato, orange.

wouldn't need to be a graduate assistant. Makes sense that a player who's experienced the NFL (in whatever capacity), who's smart enough to have graduated from Northwestern and one could guess smart enough to decide to turn to coaching, starts out as a graduate assistant under some very experienced and successful coaches while getting an advanced degree at another high-quality university.
Anyway, nice to have a smart former lineman help out on the line, and get on that coaching tree.

I would love to see you say that exact comment to a NFL player's face

Was I not paying attention to this stuff the past 10 years? Feels to me like we've hired more than double the amount of coaches than any staff we've had here.
February 10th, 2015 at 2:22 AM ^
Our staffs were notoriously small before now. Though in this instance this is a GA, and those have always been around, all of the recruiting staff we've hired were not around before Harbaugh. Other schools had them though. We're just now leaving the Dark Ages.

I was wondering that too. MGOBLUE lists 12, counting Tolbert the S&C guy. Gwen Bush and two other guys were added in the past few days, now Al Netter, so my best guess is 16 staff members (?). I'm guessing there will probably be a few more too.

of official coaches including GAs. I'm impressed that Harbaugh is not only greatly expanding the support staff, but he's bringing in people with a good range of experience, from NFL to high level HS.

The staff that Harbaugh has assembled is impressive even compared a lot of NFL coaching staffs. HS kids with NFL aspirations should be lining up to play for Harbaugh. Not only will they receive geat coaching and a world class education, they will get connections to the NFL.

I feel like this point in his career he might be open to a fun different position.
