In a fantasy world: Charlie Strong from Florida
Realistically: Tommy Tuberville. Why? He is currently unemployed, led strong defenses at Auburn, and was a good recruiter.

That would be fantastic, but Tuberville would not come as an assistant.

Strong would be fantastic , too. I expect he (and Tuberville) will get HC jobs somewhere next year.

I don't care who they are as long as they can teach linebackers and safeties how to defend the pass and maintain position on running assignments.

recruiting would be a nice addition to your list of things they can do

Is Buddy Ryan available? How about Tom Landry?

that GERG would leave Michigan for Buffalo, please, I pray Michigan has not fallen that far.
However, if in fact you are referring to Brendan Shanahan (hey, he just retired and has free time)coaching Buffalo, then I think GERG should go and be a part of that awesomeness.

Shanahan is the new coach of the Buffalo Bills[edit: I guess this is still a rumor ... sorry]. In the NFL. DC for the Buffalo Bills would be considered by most an upgrade from DC for any college team.
And, Tommy Tuberville would be sweet. Likely a pipe dream, but still.

I'm so wrapped up in the college game . . .

I was thinking the exact same thing.

Let's not even speculate on an event occurring that would lead UM to its what.....4 DC in 5 years. Nothing but a worse D will result in that.

Are you kidding me? No chance, why would he leave good thing for a bad thing? Might as well dream about getting Urban Meyer to join the staff.

I really hope that we have Gerg around several more years.
