Advice for surviving in Columbus

Submitted by blackstarwolverine on
This will be my first OSU-Michiga game; my buddy, who attends pharmacy school at OSU, got me tickets. Unfortunately, they arein the OSU student section. What precautions should I take? I'll be wearing my Michigan hoody, but I'm trying to avoid physical confrontations.

I know this sounds childish but I would do this if the student section seems to be heavily intoxicated. You might not have to worry about it since it is a noon game.

What worked for me was to wear my Michigan sweatshirt under a neutral color zip jacket.

Depending on where I was (or what the score wound up) I would just zip or unzip the jacket to show my M sweatshirt, depending on the threat level.

The general formula is:  zipped to the stadium, unzipped inside the stadium (actually the safest place in Columbus), zipped leaving the stadium, unzipped for dinner, zipped for any bar activity.

Don't be a pussy. These posts make Michigan fans look like delicate flowers that are so worried about traveling into a visitors stadium because someone may yell at them or beat them up. Just don't be an asshole and don't get offended if someone says "fuck Michigan" to you, and you'll be fine. It's not like you're going to a game in Kabul for Christ's sake.

Most will have fun rubbing it in.  You will get a lot of verbal jibes.  Probably people shouting O-H at you in an annoying fashon, and get mock angry when you don't complete it.  They will tell you they wish Hoke will always be Michigan's coach, and/or wonder why you don't root for a good team.  Unless they are drunk, that is all it will be.  Think of that bully in High School, then give him a college education.  Also, a huge portion of fans will be fat.  If you smell a lot of beer on their breath, probably Natty light, move on as fast as possible.

In the unlikely event Michigan wins, hide your Michigan gear under something and walk like you are angry.  Very few people are worse then an upset buckeye looking for something or someone to take out their anger on.  Unless you do want to fight a whole crowd, just to see what it is like.

Why do we get this thread every tome our team travels to a rival's city? We get the same answers every year.

1) keep your mouth shut

2) don't wear your team's colors

3) don't go in the first place

We are headed home from Columbus. We had a great experience. We did not tailgate but we walked about 1.5 miles each way from the stadium. Most people just said O-H when they saw us. One drunk student got in my husband's face right outside the stadium, screaming "screw Blue!" But that was the worst of it. After the game everyone told us good game. We are so glad we went.
