META: A plea to the MGoStaff (pinned CC / concussion-gate threads)
To Brian and the staff/moderators of MGoBlog... Can you PLEASE, pretty please pin one generic coaching candidate (CC:) thread to the top of the MGoBoard? When it reaches 1,000 replies, maybe you unpin and start a fresh new 2.0, 3.0, and so on? Anything to consolidate all of these threads.
Also, can we do the same for anything Hoke/Brandon/Morris/Concussion-gate related? These are starting to die down...but it's still the same mob/petition/protest folks who aren't going to ease up. Which is fine - they shouldn't. I just know many of us would appreciate if these were consolidated as well. Especially when we know more will pop up after the pressers this week.
MGoBlog is special to many of us and we enjoy discussion about all of Michigan athletics or even more than just the same 2-3 Michigan football topics. At the same time, there are some very good thoughts/threads, so I hope they don't go away entirely. Thank you for your consideration.

Was planning on doing something similar in the morning. If anyone thinks they have a good suggestion we'll gladly listen in this thread.
October 5th, 2014 at 11:08 PM ^
Something told me you all were, but I figured if I made the post tonight - rather than in the morning, it may have a little more time for suggestions.
Regardless, you all have done a tremendous job. As always, but especially these past 2 weeks.
October 6th, 2014 at 8:13 AM ^
If I recall from last time we simply started with a CC morning thread and then added an afternoon or evening thread whenever the old one got too ridiculous. That would seem to make the most sense.
October 6th, 2014 at 9:00 AM ^
To play Devil's advocate:
There are already a bunch of pinned posts and any new news would get lost in them. While CC threads can be a bit much, what are they taking space away from? I'd hope any time there's big news that there's a new thread about it. If it's general ramblings and not new news, I'd rather have the mods just take it down and encourage people to respond and react to actual news.
If someone really wants to give their HOT TAKE on CC or ConcussionGate, then at this point they should actually construct a reasoned, well-thought essay. And that's what the Diary section is for.

My question to you - is what else would be discussed?
Our potential winning strategy against Penn State?
Getting sacked vs intercepted?
October 5th, 2014 at 11:18 PM ^
I share your concern. Previously there would be much discussion about how the team was playing but I think for most we have reached the edge of the cliff and are teetering or fallen off the edge. When we have reached the point where we legitimetly are staring down the barrel of not winning another game what exactly should be discussed? It's all more of the same discussing how awful all the usual suspects are at doing their job.
Perhaps we could discuss PSU this week. While I think the initial emotion of anger is starting to die off, this time it is more of a deep seated anger due to reaching the breaking point with this coaching staff and AD.

These alone (above) should provide a solid amount of material...
- The amazing weeks of CFB we're going to have after that (weeks 7-9 should all be as good as last week...the first 5 were awful, but there are some really good matchups for 3 more weeks).
- Recruiting (all sports)
- Interesting articles/links in sports
- How our alums are doing in the pros and related articles to them
- MLB playoffs
- NFL season
- Drinking
- Fantasy world stuff like (All-Michigan team under Brady Hoke vs. All-Michigan team under Rich Rod)
- Over/Under, Fact or Fiction type threads for the upcoming week
- UNIFORMZ, depth charts, funny videos, and other random threads that always pop up on the board

"Michigan Football (pressers/articles/quotes/strategies/solutions/general football talk)"
You DO realize that no one nationally is talking about or cares about the team on the field any more, rght? We're a 2-4 team that is a contender to go 2-10. What is there to discuss there that hasn't already been said?

Please make this happen.

Thank you
Suggestions for pinned threads:
- Fire Brady Hoke because... / when will it happen ...
- Fire David Brandon because... / when will it happen...
- John Bacon says....
- Jim Harbaugh updates...
- Concussions are bad...
- All your CC's belong here...
Aside from that some long term METAs
Most message boards are ordered by "most recent" comment going to the top of the message board list. Ours are ordered by "last created". It seems strange.
And most difficult, it is almost impossible to tell who is responding to what comment within a thread. It says "responds to #203" but first that is difficult to figure out and it seems to go out of order when someone responds in between. I don't get why the "nesting" on the message boards is so off. Maybe it is just me.
October 6th, 2014 at 1:15 AM ^
The confused message numbering is annoying, but the "Reply to #NN" link does take you to the correct "parent" post of a reply (not #NN), and the browser's back-button will then reposition the thread back to the "(Reply to #NN)" post. Perhaps this is common knowledge - new to me.
October 6th, 2014 at 6:55 PM ^
I was all set to +1 you but it doesn't work that way, at least for me, unless you stay on the same page. Example: There are 212 posts, some guy reading the first page replies so he's #213. Eight replies later I'm trying to figure out who X is replying to so I hit the link and it takes me to page 5.
I was excited for a minute and wish it did work that way.
October 6th, 2014 at 3:29 AM ^
All your CC's are belong to us.
October 6th, 2014 at 6:27 AM ^
Sadly, that's a Drupal thing, and as someone mentioned below, the comment numbering is also fluid so as to be rather useless - I've had the same experience. One thing that helps a little, if you at least want the outline to be more apparent, is to switch to "Threaded List - Collapsed" in the settings at the top of the thread (under the content box) and hit "Save". The problem here, of course, is that you can no longer see the comments right away if you do that.

But when it dominates the board - the same topic. It gets old.
The threads discussing other topics get pushed off the first page because there are 3-4 more CC: John Doe threads popping up right behind it.
And I even said, there's some good stuff...so it's not about not wanting to read something. It's about:
1. The same topic spread out between multiple thread
2. Good threads being pushed down because of the flooding of these "same topic threads"
3. Threads on interesting or different topics not being discussed being pushed down because of the flooding of these "same topic threads"
...sure many of us are tired of reading it. I mean there's a Ron Zook thread now - c'mon (I never read it FWIW). But that's not the only reason for my request.
It also doesn't mean that if, for example, for the CC pinned thread...if a coaching candidate came out and commented on Michigan, that it wouldn't get its own thread. It would and should.
What I'm referring to is the "hey, this is my thought...what do you think?" type threads. Not the actual articles, links, quotes or information that have been verified. If Jim Harbaugh said "I wouldn't consider Michigan as along as their current administration is in place"...I'm not asking for that stuff to go into the CC thread. That 100% is news.
Again, I'm especially referring to the threads that are a random thought (on the same topic) posted for discussion or reaction. Which are fine, I just would like to see them consolidated.

Ugh I hate this response. If I started 15 threads about infant penises, you wouldn't be saying "well just don't click on it." The quality of content here matters. Don't pretend otherwise.
October 6th, 2014 at 12:10 AM ^
October 6th, 2014 at 3:32 AM ^
Huh? Pushed down because of lack of commenting? Threads don't get bumped back up to the top of the board every time someone posts a new comment in it.
EDIT: Wait, is that what happens on the recent tab? I just realized in almost 7 years of being on this site I don't think I've ever used the recent or hot tab lol.
October 5th, 2014 at 11:20 PM ^
I guess we can add
"Decommitted / Goodbye" thread too. Sigh.
October 5th, 2014 at 11:24 PM ^
I think a couple ideas you noted above and we've thought of in the past are good, but this is more about keeping the sideboard clear than keeping every bit of news in a predetermined thread.
There don't need to be eight posts a day giving pros and cons of whatever coach because it pushes threads with more info off the front page (for example the Morris c/o 13 thread or 10 men punt thread). A piece of recruiting news or a new quote from Hoke or Brandon should absolutely get their own threads.
October 5th, 2014 at 11:30 PM ^
For the Master CC thread, you can insert links to other threads of specific coaches where people can discuss a certain candidate. It would be something that will be maintained by inserting Coach A and Coach B links.
Same thing could be done with the "Firing XXXXX" threads with a specific link to Brady Hoke and a link to Fire Brandon.
October 5th, 2014 at 11:38 PM ^
. . . would be easier.
October 5th, 2014 at 11:40 PM ^
Is a "CC" tab next to New/Recent/Hot possible?
October 5th, 2014 at 11:49 PM ^
Yeah but then the labeling process would actually be relevant for the first time in the history of the MGoBoard. We can't have that.

i like it
October 6th, 2014 at 12:03 AM ^
I suggest we pin the UTL Kickoff protest thread. I think it will have a far greater impact than any discussion, and it is of the utmost importance that DB is gone sooner rather than later. It's imperative that we do, or at least thoroughly discuss this action, as I see it having an even greater impact on DB's position.
Anybody in their right mind knows that Brady has to go in December, but we need to nuke the cancer at it's core before we can get better.

October 6th, 2014 at 6:06 AM ^
You're attempting to steer the site toward certain positions on issues that not all students, alumni, and fans share. Not everyone thinks Brandon should go, and even some of those that do don't support the UTL protest.
October 6th, 2014 at 7:16 AM ^
This argument is, to be blunt, complete garbage. This site doesn't represent "all students, alumni, and fans", never has, and never will. It's a private blog run by ONE GUY - what Brian says goes.
And I don't know if you've noticed from the home page, but Brian is in favor of both (a) a coaching change and (b) a potential protest at a home game.
October 6th, 2014 at 12:17 AM ^
Brian and the mods banned me for saying pretty much this exact same thing. I'd be shocked if they actually listened to this request. It simply does not fit the narrative. Limiting threads on the Brandon/Hoke/Boycotting outrage will stall the hysteria, and there is no way this blog will allow that.
October 6th, 2014 at 12:23 AM ^
I don't know who banned you or why- it wasn't me and there isn't a way to see- but I've never banned someone over a position they take (that's not just blateltly offensive), and I haven't ever been pressured to make decisions based on that either.
It'll probably be limited to the million "this guy should be the next coach" threads, but I can tell that some of the things brought up here are being listened to.

we can click or not at our own risk. The value of a thread is in its views. Filing new posts into pinned threads requires just as much work as reading them in the first place but comes with the added distraction of obscuring content from where we normally expect to see it and have our RSS feeds set to look for it.
October 6th, 2014 at 12:46 AM ^
Two pinned threads I'd like to see:
1. Why Michigan has had such horrid luck with all key opposite line assistants since Carr - Shafer/Gerg/Borg/Nuss.
2. Why Michigan fails to adjust to opponents and is probably dead last in the nation in rock/paper/scissors plays. I.e., why Michigan coaches seem to not give a turd about scheme adjustments based upon what their opponents are giving them, as evidenced by:
a. A head coach who doesn't wear a headset, which means he couldn't give one poop about what the other team is doing and how to counter it, so he can just clap his hands and "coach his kids up" on the sideline.
b. An offensive coordinator who also doesn't sit up in the box, and calls the most unimaginative offense possible. Did anyone else enjoy watching Rutger's offense far more than ours?
October 6th, 2014 at 5:53 AM ^
I would rather see discussions continue organically. When things go well, people post about sunshine and, uh, roses. When they go badly, people post to vent their ire. I don't see this board degenerating into RCMB anytime soon because anyone whose posts are really out of line gets hammered, either by the readers, mods or both.
My experience with this board has been that whenever any MGoUser feels the need to tell everyone on the board what to do, the discussions that they are complaining about are close to the end of their "shelf lives," anyway. I agree that the CC threads are a bit much, but nobody is forcing anyone to read them, either.
I "vote" for keeping the board the same great "place" as it has been for the last however-many years. 16 people disliked the Narducci post enough to neg it. 16 people negged the Fitzgerald post. One person negged the Patterson post.
If the posts are so offensive, why haven't more people negged them? If 16 people are going to run the board, I would prefer that it be Brian and 15 mods.

Reddit does this to "clean up" their NFL subreddit. You know what the end result is?
News gets hidden when it gets stuffed into a thread that's difficult or impossible to sort or search. Let's say something incredible happens with Brandon - there's no way you're going to know it's in post 673 of the sticky unless you manually check it repeatedly. All a collected thread does is sweep things under the rug.
October 6th, 2014 at 8:00 AM ^
If something amazing happens with Brandon, it will be its own thread/on the front page quickly. But I think "wouldn't it be cool if we got Chris Peterson" doesn't need its own thread.
