Noon Games Open Thread

Submitted by alum96 on

Incredibly full day of good games today - some in each time slot rather than being all stuffed at 8 PM to boot.  Going to be a good one.

OSU v Maryland and A&M v Miss State (no defense to be played) should be the 2 most interesting in the noon time slot

  • Ball State at Army, CBS Sports Net, noon
  • Florida at Tennessee, SEC, noon
  • Iowa State at Oklahoma State, FS1, noon
  • Marshall at Old Dominion, FSN, noon
  • Ohio State at Maryland, ABC, noon
  • Purdue at Illinois, ESPN2, noon
  • SMU at East Carolina, ESPNU, noon
  • Texas A&M at MIssissippi State, ESPN, noon

1999 Michigan Offense: Carr's Manball.Every starter made it to NFL for at least a cup of coffee.Brady,A-Train,Hutchison etc.  37 rush attempts per game 119 yards pg. 3.2 per carry.

2008 Michigan Offense: RR 1st season. One of the worst QB's in Mich history.Molk Soph year.38 rush attempts per game.148 yards per game.3.9 per carry.

Every Saturday I see numerous teams run some version of a 'spread em out, option type offense' with some level of success. Then I watch us try to pound the ball with minimal success. Many say when the O-Line gets better our Manball approach will succeed but just look at the 1999 O-Line and the stats. Our offensive woes are more a function of an arcane philosphy than bad O-Line,poor QB play etc.

Why 1999 and not the 2000 offense?? Why not compare the 1991 offense and the 2010 offense?

Frankly, I'd prefer the 1991 offense with Elvis Grbac, Dez, Derrick Alexander, Tony McGee, Ricky Powers, Jesse Johnson,  and Tyrone Wheatley. Two explosive receivers(and returners), an excellent receiving TE, and three quality backs. This was the best Michigan since I don't know when. You had productive players at all levels.

It's not so much about scheme as coaching. A pro style offense can be every bit as effective as a spread if a coach is willing to be aggressive. The problem with Manball as Hoke and Carr interpreted it was that it was designed to minimize mistakes. It was a philosophy based on fear. You can't coach like that in modern football.

The best attribute of guys like Meyer and Rodriguez is that they don't coach with fear. They coach with hyper aggressiveness. The same is true for a Dantonio and Narduzzi from a defensive standpoint. They want to crush you. You are the nail and they the hammer. That is what Michigan needs.

Michigan needs to change it's core philosophy from one based on fear of mistakes to one based on intelligent aggressivess.

Agree with you about fear vs intelligent aggressiveness philosophy. I chose 1999 because of the current meme that our offensive problem is O-Line and 1999 O-Line was one our best ever.I chose 2008 because it was RR 1st year & probably his worst team talent wise.

FWIW  I looked up 1991 & 2010. I agree 1991 was a good offense.

1991 Rushing Yards Per Game 232 on 45 attempts pg. Passing Yards 188 pg. 24 attempts per game.

2010 Rushing Yards per game 250 on 30 attempts pg. Passing Yards 238 pg. 42 attempts pg.

Wow Armani Reeves and Stefon Diggs both fighting for the ball... Man does that bring back recruiting memories...

Double whammy on that one

Is what we ran in the 2008 Cap One Bowl.

NFL style spread where you can get under center, you can go from the shotgun, you can go 5 wide or 2 TE.

I loved the flexibility with that offense and 2 fumbles by a kid who never fumbled kept UF in the game.

Give me that offense and give me an attacking defense.

I'm not a huge fan of the Oregon spread or even Rich Rod's spread. I don't want to be in "and 1" or in goalline situations trying to go from the shotgun.

I really like the flexibility to have a QB like a Shane Morris who can spread it out, but also get under center and run something a little more traditional.

The key for me is having an elite OL and being able to play with pace. I'm a bgi fan of the "check with me" style no huddle. We don't have to go fast, but we can if we want. I want to dictate the pace of the game...not the other way around.

...but I still watch that game screaming at my TV or computer as to why we didn't use that offense at any other opinion in the Henne/Hart era. Not with Edwards or with Manningham/Arrington.

And it's literally what ALL Michigan fans were clamoring for all year.

Borges finally throwing the screens vs. OSU last year was somewhat the same, even if they weren't bubble screens.

Larry Brown and Mack Brown?

That would be an interesting "over the hill" combo. They have the clout, the school has the resources.

Stranger things have happened.

Purdue 14 - Illini 14. I can't believe ESPN2 is showing this game. Sad fact is that both these team may be able to beat Michigan.  Look at how well OSU young OL is playing. No excuses blamed on youth!

This is my first Saturday of the season when I'm watching a bunch of games. I'm in my glory, but it's such a stark reminder of how stagnant and boring our offense is. Some of these games are just fun to watch. I'd like to feel like way about our O.

28-7.  Maybe Sumlin will hire a DC at halftime.  How he can roll out the same crap after finising 109th in the country last year is beyond me.
