OT World Cup Day 7 Open Thread
Day 7 of the World Cup is upon us. Spain/Chile should be the premiere matchup today. We'll see if Spain can bounce back against a very talented and exciting Chilean side.
Here are the matchups for your viewing pleasure today:
Group B
Australia - Netherlands 12pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Spain - Chile 3pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Group C
Cameroon - Croatia 6pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Damn wow damn. This is the Spain of OLD. Talented but chumps.
Boy I never really like Spain much but this is pretty brutal to watch.
Body language and sniping between players has me thinking if Spain doesnt score in 1st 10 minutes this is done.
"I don't know, Jim. There's obviously something wrong with him. He's taken off his shoes and one of his socks and...actually, I think he's crying."
From the Royal Tennenbaums. If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for?
that really get to me. they always make the razors look so effective!!
he had a great year for atletico, but he isn't the same kind of player as a david villa. he seems pretty oafish out there.
EDIT: haha as soon as i write that, he goes and pulls out an unreal ball with the bike
Damn it Busquets, they are doomed....
shameful shameful stuff
So, he didn't break his leg? shocking!
It seems like too many players slow down when they're on the break rather than take that 45-degree shot on goal. They rarely get a better look.
Makes sense

They're lucky they even managed to score this tournament.
Come on goalie don't be a pussy. Not you too.
but it's kinda funny how shameless they are.
I've been cheering for them but yeah . . . this is getting pretty bad. Just play the game guys.
The ref should add about 5 minutes of stoppage time to make up for all the stalling.
The ref either adds time or starts giving out yellow cards. The time wasting is part of the game, which is punishable.
Don't get me wrong, I don't like it either but it is part of the game. I don't fault Chile for doing it but there are risks (yellow card accumulation being the biggest).
In fairness to Geiger, he did add 6 minutes at the end.
I just don't like something being called part of the game when it has nothing to do with playing soccer.
What I think they should do is have someone actually keep track of the amount of time lost during all the stoppages and add them up, so there is no mystery and it's not just an arbitrary decision by the referee ("Hmm, that felt like 3 minutes.") The total amount of stoppage time is probably a lot more than we think - it might be more like 7-8 minutes in a typical half.
He stops his watch when play is stopped. They don't show it very often, but when they do you'll see him clicking a button on his watch when there's an injury or a stoppage.
Well called game by Mark Geiger, who is from New Jersey. This is his second match of the tournament after the Greece match. I expect him to get another match after this performance.
Did you place a small wager on Spain by any chance?
It's a total shock. Spain returned 16 players from their championship team. Casillas was supposed to be elite. Instead they just laid down and gave ZERO effort through two games. Pathetic.
Cameroon:
Itandje, Assou-Ekotto, Nkoulou (c), Song, Moukandjo, Aboubakar, Choupo Moting, Chedjou, Mbia, Enoh, Matip
Croatia:
CROATIA Pletikosa, Pranjic, Perisic, Corluka, Lovren, Rakitic, Modric, Srna (c), Mandzukic, Olic, Sammir
Well, the Monroe doctrine seems to apply in this world cup, btw, 6 minutes!
Spain's elimination is fantastic news for fans of Michigan football. History has taught us that the fortunes of the two are inversely correlated:
From 1968-2007, Michigan had 40 consecutive non-losing seasons - 39 of them winning seasons. Over that same time, Spain won nothing in international play. The closest they came? 1984, when they reached the final of the Euro. That also happened to be Michigan's one non-winning season during that stretch.
Then in 2008, Spain broke through, winning the Euro. As for Michigan football, well, we know. Spain won more tournaments in 2010 and 2012 and Michigan football was mired in mediocrity.
This is the break we needed. Michigan will be back!
Turns out striking another player in frustration is not a good thing
...is there a manlier act than trying to head butt a player that's sitting on the ground?
Nice effort, Mr. Song. Might very well have out-Pepe'd Pepe with that one.
That's three World Cup red cards for one family.
African teams have looked pretty bad in this wc overall, I'd say Ghana is the best of them by far.
ivory coast? they are ranked the highest team by every single legit site, and they have the most talent, and they are just the best...
Okay so I am a ref and a geek but the USA crew who did the Chile-Spain match did a very solid job in a tournament that has had some poor officiating. USA men's soccer and officiating gets crap from the Euros in particular (some deservedly) and it was just nice to see our boys do well.
