OT World Cup Day 6 Open Thread
Everyone recovered sufficiently? What a night for the USMNT. Here we go on Day 6:
Group H
Belgium - Algeria 12pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Group A
Brazil - Mexico 3pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Group H
Russia - Korea Republic 6pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Really hoping to see Hazard and Lukaku show great chemistry.
I'm interested to see how Alderweireld, Witsel and Chadli move up and down the right side for Belgium.
Vertonghen--continuing his diabolical form from Spurs. Come on Algeria.
This is surprising.
Algeria is Africa's best team. Well organized, pass and move with fluidity and pace. They'll make it to the knock out round without a doubt.
ivory coast
Great call. Do you have any stocks I should buy???
Ahem.
YOU'RE WELCOME MEXICO.
Wow...Vertonghen proves that despite their talent, Belgium's back four are a question mark. Feghouli converts.
Vertonghen is a fucking idiot.
Bentaleb and Vertonghen, two Spurs players displaying their idiocy.
I have to think Belgium would benefit from putting Mirallas in. De Bruyne is struggling and Belgium are having a difficult time breaking down Algeria's defense. Mirallas is a good direct runner who can create all sorts of issues.
FYI Coentrao and Almeida out for rest of group stage
Cutie alert
"and a moment of stupidity from the belgium vertonghen"
Algeria is very well organized at the back and really frustrating the Belgian attack. They need Mirallas or Mertens on for some creativity.
And there he is...let's see how much pressure the Belgians can muster.
I just turned the game back on and I have no sound at work. Did they make any changes?
Mertens for Chadli.
Next off might be Witsel after that header miss.
Thanks
I bet De Bruyne's Mom wants to run onto the pitch and put sunscreen on him. He's going to be as red as his jersey by the end of this match.
is way better than the squad we played 4 years ago.
watching that game was what i assume ghananian fans felt watching last night, only with better outcomes for us...
I don't know about that. Algeria is older than it was four years ago and its performance in qualifying wasn't much different than it was in 2009-10. They qualified by the skin of their teeth.
Belgium is just crapping its pants.
Anyone know why Puma is the kit maker for most if not all of the African countries?
CAF used to negotiate with sponsors directly rather than each nation doing their own. I'm not sure why that was done but some teams are now on their own (Nigeria wears Adidas now, South Africa wears Nike, I believe).
Maybe it's just easier for them to bid for the rights of African teams. For the big countries elsewhere, you have to butt heads with Adidas and Nike.
Yeah, I think it's a guarantee that smaller countries don't struggle to find a shirt sponsor. Additionally, I think Puma signed up to be the main sponsor for the African Cup of Nations as well.
that was legit.
So is Fellaini good again?
I think he has always been pretty good. I just think he got a bit overrated after moving back to the midfield after he played pseudo-striker.
Now this is more along the lines of what was expected.
Brilliant goal for Belgium. Very nice. SUBS!
Belgium looks like it got over its early-match butterflies.
For Algeria, this has to be disappointing but it's not a terrible result - to be only -1 in goal difference after playing the best team in the group isn't so bad. That could pay dividends later.
Brazil:
Julio Cesar, Dani Alves, Thiago Silva (c), David Luiz, Marcelo, Paulinho, Fred, Neymar, Oscar, Ramires, Luiz Gustavo
Mexico:
Ochoa, Rodriguez, Marquez (c), Herrera, Layun, Dos Santos, Moreno, Guardado, Peralta, Aguilar, Vazquez
Hulk dropped out of the Brazil lineup (not surprising)...not sure if it was injury or form or both
He was invisible in the first game against Croatia. No one has made mention of him being injured but most expected him to be dropped for this game.
But he did leave Brazil's training with a muscle injury the other day.
Guess I missed that one. Still, it's not like he did anything against Croatia when he was healthy...
Brazil were tight lipped on whether he would play today or not...even if he was healthy, I think he would have been dropped.
That makes no sense.
Got to say I'm pulling for Mexico. After CR's crazy upset in Group D, our win, Mexico's first win, I'd love to see CONCACAF just take an axe to the frozen mindset of everyone around the world with, say, a 2-1 Mexico win today. Would be so nice to see Brazil beaten at home by our 4th-place qualifier.
If John Brooks can dream, I can too, right?
Nah sorry man... gotta disagree with you... Brazil's got this!
A Brazil loss could mean rioting across Brazil. Not sure that's something I want to see.
Nah. I always want Mexico to lose.
I don't understand US fans rooting for Mexico. It only makes sense if you are Mexican-American and/or if they are every 4 year type fans.
I hate the smug attotude the rest of the world has toward CONCACAF more than I hate Mexico.
