I cancelled my membership this year. I've repeatedly e-mailed them for years and asked for some semblance of networking, and/or a job board. Looks like they finally have a job board-type of substance, but I don't see the point. No, I don't give a damn about your e-mails or the magazine, give me something meaningful, like job postings.
Everyone should be embarrassed, 50% Off Frozen Yogurt At Easy Freezy reeks of desperation
I signed up for the lifetime membership, but I also thought it was ridiculous at the time that non alumni could join. It does seem to offer some great discounts on things, but I cant imagine myself using more than a couple of the discounts throughout my life.
Personally, I'm not sure if I will ever get much benefit from it(however, it does seem like they are stepping up the job board). At the very least, I was able to write the $1200 off on my taxes.
that it is harder to get into my old corporations alumni association than it is to get into Michigan's. You had to at least WORK at my old corporation to join their Alumni Association! And yes, the benefits for that group are actually worth it--I've been a member there for years, but I've never joined the UM association.
When they boast that U-M has "more living alumni than any other university" ... In other words, more people who have some kind of real or imagined affiliation and join the AAUM.
Had I not just renewed my membership, I'd be sending a cancellation letter. All these years, I thought "alumni" meant you'd at least attended a class, and that's a pretty low standard.
People will point to Brandon, but Brandon is more of a symptom rather than the cause. He was brought on because the school has become more focused on branding and money over the last decade. Under MSC it became very corporatized.
Michigan has decided that it wants to be Starbucks.
This is, frankly, strange. A Michigan State alum I work with joined via the groupon just so he can mock Michigan fans who've always lauded the benefits of the Michigan network to him. If this was Ohio State, I'd be upset.
