OT- Tigers vs Astros series May 5th to May 8th
I know people had complained in the past about a Tigers thread everyday and such, but they've also become nonexistent unless it's a series against Chicago or Cleveland, so here's my solution: i'll attempt to create a thread for the entire series and as it moves along I can update it to bump it up the board.
Pitching Matchup 5-7-14
Detroit
- Rick Porcello
- 4-1with 32 IP and sporting a 3.66 ERA
- FIP of 3.33
- K/9: 6.19
- BB/9: 1.13
Houston
- Brad Peacock
- 0-2 through 25.2 IP and a 5.26ERA
- FIP: 4.59
- K/9: 8.42
- BB/9: 7.01 (holy hell that's high)
Lineups:

The Tigers took the first 2 games of the series and look to continue their pitching dominance over the lowly Astros. I'll post the lineups when I see them announced
I think this type of post every once in a while is very welcomed. I like generating excitement about the Tigers and this helps to be able to chat about it with others who share my excitement.
Any feedback is welcome, even the "well baseball sucks" if I get enough people that think that then I'll move on from posting these.
I have a better idea: if you get enough people who like the posts, and I suspect you will, then post away and the "baseball sucks" crowd can get stuffed, because people who post in threads just to say "this sucks" are trolling and ought to be Boliviated.
+1 for "boliviated"
The word "Boliviated" has the potential to rank right up there with such words and terms as 'veracity" and "Tacopants" on MGoBlog.
Would "Boliberated" possibly be the antonym to "Boliviated"?
It could be. It sounds a hell of a lot better than Belieberated.
Or Bieberated.
Sometimes I think once they drop off the first page on the right they disappear never to be seen again but I always go to recent posts. The Tigers are looking good right now despite bullpen issues. I have missed the conversations.
As far as tonights game, I'm looking forward to seeing how Ray does. I think he's going to be a good pitcher. Whether he's ready to show it tonight is the question.
I've heard discussion of moving him to the bullpen and getting rid of Coke if he pitches well. I'm for anything that removes Coke from the roster at this point. He's had three years to show he can be even semi decent and except for the one post season has gotten hammered. I don't see them moving Ray to the bullpen at this point no matter how he pitches. Hopefully he pitches well and we will see.
I'm not sure you want to move Ray to the bullpen, too be honest he needs to log some innings this year and he's also only pitched 87 total innings above Single-A competition. While I'm in favor of getting a replacement for Coke I don't think it's wise to move Ray and or Smyly for that matter to the pen.
Maybe DD will drop a bottle of Coke along the road somewhere so he can bring up the bubblegum machine from Toledo. He couldn't be any worse and he could teach the team Pilates.
I know they would like to have another left hander but I'd highly doubt it's Ray at this point.
I didn't think Joe Nathan looked particularly impressive last night. However, he didn't get much action in their previous games so maybe it was the effects of some rust.
You won't hear any complaints from me about daily Tiger threads. I'm looking forward to seeing Ray pitch tonight.
I like this idea, maybe try to update it at least an hour before gametime with starting pichers and sorylines like you have for this one.
As for tonight I am excite to see what Robbie Ray can do in his debut.
Yeah that's the idea, once I see a definitive lineup for both teams I'll post them into the OP as well, obviously this will change daily but they're easy changes to edit in.
...really optimisitc about this team. Even with an awkward schedule, bullpen difficulties, and a below-average version of Miggy...they've been in 1st place every day. This might be the year. Go get'em Tigers!
takes off in a few weeks, maybe after the break. Just because the abdominal wall muscles have healed from surgery doesn't mean they've returned to pre-injury form. I think his increased doubles production is indicative of sooner rather than later. Also, It could be he is still relearning his swing, he quite likely picked up some bad habits trying to work around his injuries last season.
All in all though, I agree, this team seems to be very well balanced aside from the BP...and man, you have got to love speed on the bases, Kinsler's mistakes notwithstanding.
As an aside, there be a hate building here in the D about the Fresh Prince of Arlington not delivering the goods.
to vent. Because I live outside the FSD broadcast footprint.....well outside, I've subscribed to MLB.TV and I can watch just about every regular season game. For a buck and quarter that isn't bad at all. However, there are some limitations, for instance I can't stream Detroit v Rangers games home or away, which is fine, I just watch the games on TV.
Now come the vent, evidently the Dallas area is within the Houston TV broadcast footprint....it's not actually but that's beside the point, therefore MLB.TV has a streaming blackout of all Houston Astro games, not even audio. I'm pissed, not only am I 200 miles away from the Houston TV market, I'm 1200 miles away from the Detroit market. Damn it all, Selig should have had Milwaukee returning to its roots in the AL, not the laughing stock of the southwest Astros.
aside from the blackout restrictions, is the best yet. It's quite fast, HD all the time, and usually proceeds the TV broadcast by a few seconds.
Last year they had a 75% off deal on Father's day, I'm hoping they do that again this year as that's the only way I'll put down the $ for it. That said you can usually find streams fairly easily online but it's only the home broadcasts, so let me tell you watching a Tiger-White Sox game online gets annoying as all hell as you're forced to listen to the Hawk...
for the annoying Hawk.
When the Tigers play the Rangers I have to admit I like listening to Tom Grieve.
I love the idea, but I would simply suggest changing the title of the thread to "Tigers vs. Astros: Series Preview" or something like that. When I first saw this post I thought it might have been someone looking for tickets or asking a specific question.
Needless to say, I'm also a big fan of baseball (especially the Tigers, but also U of M baseball and sofball) and support your proactive approach to providing baseball fans a thread for each and every Tiger series.
I don't think this idea has ever been tried, but I'm certain you'll find a lot of support from the many Michigan fans who follow MLB, especially the Tigers.
As for tonight's game, I'm pretty excited to see what Robbie Ray can do as a new starter. I wasn't as upset as many about the Fister trade---don't get me wrong, I love what Doug Fister provided, but I also recognized that, more and more, opposing lineups were starting to catch up with what he threw. Ray looks to have a lot of potential and, if successful, could prove to be a very valuable as a lefty starter.
How 'bout our Tigers? Best record in baseball right now (winning %, anyway)!!!
I enjoyedd the tiger threads, usually they were just the right length. I suppose a series thread is an ok compromise if Tiger threads were annoying people (hard to believe anyone on this blog would whine about something so inane, though...)
Impressive for a young pitcher. Good start.
Way to get out of Jam rookie.
And that's why you don't lol, just cost us a run.
Hope that doesn't come back to haunt them.
Leyland-haters will probably conveniently forget that we just small-balled our way out of a run there.
(This is not to be construed as ripping on Ausmus. Only Leyland-haters.)
Yep. Being aggressive is good when it's good to be aggressive. It's not good to be aggressive on the basepaths when Miguel Cabrera can put a ball in the seats in any given AB.
Long live the 3-Run homer. #leyland
:/ Agree, with Cabrera at the plate you wait for the hit, oh well...
Impressive kid.
to their first tiger game on thursday. we are driving down at 0-dark-hundred for the 1 pm start. weather should be warm (we still have a tiny bit of snow up here on the farm as of sunday), and it will be neat to show them the game and the stadium. they are all a pleasure to travel with.
What is that? Midnight? Just how far from Detroit are you (without giving exact location), way up in the Keweenaw Peninsula or far Western UP? I haven't been anywhere west of Luce County in well over a decade, but even in bad weather, it never seemed to take that long to get to the Western UP Ski areas from GR.
I believe you about the snow (UGH!), as one of my brothers was up near Marquette on a business trip just over a week ago and talked about seeing a lot of snow. Not to mention the snow that fell in much of the UP just yesterday morning.
Enjoy that trip and game with your boys---I envy you, as I likely won't take in my first game of the season until the Boston series in early June.
feed, egg gathering, water, etc done before we get into the car. we are in northern lower, though the oldest two were born in the UP. it snowed here briefly sunday and yesterday. this morning the big lake (michigan) had ice for miles, though it melted by mid-day with the sun out. normal year i am swimming in the big lake by the last week of may. i'll be lucky if i'm in the water by the last week of june. i so hope global warming is true...
is thirty minutes before Oh Dark-Thirty which is loosely half an hour before sun up.
mean time, as aligned with the astrological bodies and shooting the time space distance continum off the closest known quasar. or something like that.
Waiting for a double steal!
