Interesting opinion piece on CFP selection by USA Today's SEC columnist
Although the link is Tuscaloosa News, the author is the SEC columnist for USA Today (and a Knoxville guy). Provides an interesting perspective.

Had Alabama lost the game against Auburn but won the SEC, the #4 spot would have gone to UGA. FSU without Travis was not making the CFP over a one-loss SEC team.

If the 12 team playoff was in-place this year I guarantee they make FSU the 3-seed and let them play it out to see what an incredible team can do with 3 weeks to train up a RS Jr. Backup QB.
The only reason Bama AND Texas jumped FSU wasn't because of the 'eye' test and wasn't because of the injury. They just were never going to leave the SEC out. Without the injury they would have found a reason to jump Bama over Texas and fed that to the media to shill.

Obviously not as big a deal as being left out. But in a 12 team playoff, either Alabama or FSU end up at 5 and don't get a bye. This is why is should have been 8.

That article just pisses me off even more.

I knew Bama would be in if they beat UGA because the committee had laid the groundwork for that over the course of the preceding week and because of the slant of the media conversation.
That being said, I never thought it's a good thing. In fact, I think it's a terrible thing because it messes with the core concept of sports that teams need set parameters they know they need to meet to achieve their goals. It's the goalpost moving just to get the 'desirable' match-up that exposes the playoff as a non-serious media spectacle rather than a real competition to establish a national champion.
Unfortunately, this was the 'perfect storm' for it to happen because the committee's members could ignore all future implications of the decision by pointing to the 12 team playoff next year as a 'solution' to their own self-created problem.

It's garbage, and most of the country knows it's garbage. The rich get richer. Rather than savaging one another, we need to change it.

I've been a life long Michigan fan and college football fan. Over the past few years, I've basically become just a Michigan fan. I watch less and less other college football and it's because of shit like this.
With the continued move to TV contract based conferences and games being played on streaming services, the broader sport of college football will not survive if fans only watch their team and don't care about all the other games.

“It’s one of the questions that we do ask. From a coaching standpoint, who do you want to play? Who do you not want to play?” Corrigan said on ESPN, adding that the three former coaches on the committee have “a significant voice in the room.”
This nearly knocked me out of my seat when I heard it, and I'm sure it makes Norvell furious. It almost makes it sounds as if, the committee was going to pick FSU, then did a poll and everyone said they'd rather play FSU, so they switched it to Alabama. Honestly, that might have been how it played out.

I heard that too. My take was they chose Bama because those coaches would rather play FSU and they couldn’t give Michigan the “easier” team.

Then just make it Georgia Alabama Michigan Texas and be done with it.
Dont be a half fraud. What a disgrace.

Remember, kids, the SEC is Poochie.
Whenever football ever comes up, the Poochie of conferences MUST always be mentioned. Whenever the SEC isn't playing, all the other teams should always be asking where the SEC is.

Just validates Sankey plays chess and the big post-Delaney is playing tiddlywinks.

The committees stated objective is to get the best four teams in, not what is fairest.
I am viewing it as more of a referendum on the ACC vs the SEC. You tools let Notre Dame in your conference with a 'special' deal for letting them keep their filthy NBC money. You deserve what you get, ACC.

The article actually addresses this. They didn't admit the four most deserving (M, W, T, FSU) or the best four (the best four would have included Georgia, per the article, and that's tough to argue against). So they split the baby and went with three-deserving plus the SEC using the excuse that losing Travis Jordan meant FSU wasn't good enough anymore. They acquiesced to Sankey and that's all there is to it.

There are certainly going to be a lot of college football grievances aired this Festivus.

This is why Petitti has to go. Clown left mid MVP interview of his own conference championship game. 0 standing up for the conference, only what’s in his own interest.
and as UM fans we should know more than any that the sport is subjective. Please see split title in ‘97. What in the hell even is that?

The article is exactly right. The committee turned this into a beauty contest just THIS year so they could let in their old pal Bama and the SEC.
And Warde was there a part of it. Fire em all from the committee and fire Warde for being a part of this offense to the sport.
December 4th, 2023 at 11:19 AM ^
Consider the possibility that Warde would have preferred Michigan to play Florida State, but was outvoted.
December 4th, 2023 at 2:52 PM ^
Warde was out getting coffee while they decided.

pretty sure warde recused himself

I whole heartedly agree with this entire article.

Committee really should be asked to answer this question? After dropping FSU from 4 to 5 following the win over North Alabama, and the Jordan Travis injury, did they then elevate FSU back to number 4 the very next week after beating Florida? If they weren't good enough to remain number four after beating 10-2 Louisville, why was FSU good enough to be moved up to four after beating the most unimpressive 5-6 Gators the previous week?
Make this make sense.
On a side note, no team should ever disclose the nature and duration of an injury to their starting QB. This a lesson that should have been learned 50 years ago when the disclosure of Franklin's collarbone injury gave the Big Ten reason enough to keep Michigan out of the 1974 Rose Bowl.
