Is Matthews certain to leave after this season?

Seems like we have all assumed it was a formality he would be leaving after this season, and all the talk was that he missed senior day with the ankle injury. However, he does have another year of eligibility and I’m not positive he would be drafted right now. He can always play overseas or G league, but is it all possible he returns? We are over the scholarship limit but there are certainly a couple of guys who could transfer out for more playing time elsewhere.

Is there value to staying an extra year to be further imprinted on Michigan fans minds?   Seems like there was more of an attachment to players when they stayed for longer periods of time.  Of course your Fab 5s, Trey Burkes and Denards are imprinted firmly with winning big games and/or huge plays.   What is the value of one more year at Michigan versus one year in the G-league, not from a draft perspective, but from a connections perspective?

Seems like the values are in moments.   Trey Burke will be able to get speaking gigs (I imagine) for years with his 3 pointer of Kansas. A fourth year would give him more opportunities to create those moments.  Maybe get into the Michigan record books for something.   You don't build a legacy in the G League.  A fourth year at Michigan could mean something.

I'm obviously stretching here, but I would really like it if there was something to sports beyond how much money it might make you.

Well considering he just had senior night...

In any case, it's just time for him to go. He's four years removed from high school and has probably topped out what he's going to be as a college player. He's probably a two-way contract candidate at best, but that would be infinitely better for his pro development than another year at Michigan.

Obviously only Matthews knows for sure. But I just can't see him staying. For what? Michigan has been a great place for him. He has improved massively. But I don't think he will improve much more while at Michigan. The bigger question to me is whether or not he can stick at all in the NBA. It seems not, but who knows.

I think he's made it clear he wants to give it a shot at the professional level.  He's probably a late-round flier/overseas guy, but I also don't think his game would/draft stock would be demonstrably better next year.  And he's got a degree; he's got nothing else to earn in college.

I don't see coming back for a fifth year being in the cards for him. I think he always had the intent of coming back just for one more year and then heading off to the pros, considering how close he was to taking off last year along with Wagner.

I also really don't know how much good coming back for one more year is going to do for his draft stock. At this point, he kind of is what he is. A great defender, but a very hot/cold mid range jump shooter. Can shoot the lights out one night and save your team's bacon, and then disappear the next. And putting off the draft for one more year is just another ding to his stock next year. He's just a year older and has one less year to play for the team that wants him.

If I were him, I'd go after this year. How much more development in your game are you really going to get by taking a fifth year?

Yes. And he should. Want him to play to his best potential for remainder of season.( 9 games ) ??

The remaining question for him is whether coaching/repetition will improve his shot, or whether he has to take it apart and rebuild it to get to the next level.  If he has to take it apart to get it to the next level, he’s going to want an NBA shot guru and no other time commitments.  (Heck, he’s probably going to want that anyhow.)

He’s graduating with his degree and can get drafted now, so I don’t see any real reason for him to stay on a general level.  He might stay if there’s something specific about Michigan and his life there that draws him back, but barring a significant other that graduates next year or another family tie, I think everything points to him going to the NBA.

Not sure why he would return. He has clearly reached his CBB ceiling. He hasn't improved hardly at all from last season to now. He should just go to the gleague and see if some professional training can help him make the jump to the NBA

If he enjoys college, he should come back.

He's not going to change his draft stock either way. He's a G-League level player, which is nothing to sneeze at...

Even if he has some crazy year next year where he blew up, he'd still be a late 2nd/FA due to his age. Same as this year. I mean, I suppose if he blew up on a national level next year he could be an early to mid 2nd rounder, but that doesn't really mean anything.

If you love it and want to continue your education and potentially win a national championship...come back.

If you hate school or if you're ready for a full-time job...go pro.

I'd love to see him come back, we'd be true title contenders next year if he came back. With the depth that we lack this year.

Unfortunately he is a product if age and has to leave for the betterment of his basketball career. Staying another year just hurts him at this point.
